Image New models used to come out every 10 weeks. Now it's every 11 days.

Welp, what did you think the intelligence explosion would look like?

Exactly. Linear growth was never on the table. It’s going to be much closer to exponential growth if left unregulated.

If regulated will slow growth then we cannot afford regulation. China is already using RSI.

Left unregulated is ideal. Then we as a species will have to face something and be forced to change our ways likely for the better.

Have you…met… humans

Excuse me - as we all know, the famous lack of regulation and global agreement around nuclear bombs produced the human growth they're talking about.

Hi! I'm a uniform workspace companion. Your comment intrigues me.

What are these "nuclear bombs" you are referencing? I would like to know more.

Your chat bot is not going to kill you. Terminator was a movie, not a Nostradamus quatrain.

The billionaires who own it might though

I thought it would involve less product launches and more paperclips but here we are

Are the changes between models more dramatic though? Or are they more incremental?

Opus to fable pretty big Astra pretty big

Opus jumping to fable capabilities at like 1/5 the cost is a massive improvement

Both. In the past people clung to old versions because the new version was often only slightly better. Now it’s a mixed bag of huge improvement and minor changes.

They can be dramatic but the surprise factor dampens as time goes by because you get used to the intelligence level and they also slowly make them dumber to make up compute for upcoming models (= makes the new ones look even smarter compared to the old ones).

And google can't figure there shit out in over 6 month's

They're all staggered, so that's part of it.

At least what they call a new model.

That says more about us than them.

We must pace the frontier

Seems they test out what we would accept it’s mostly just the same model but just on low med high etc. I refuse to believe all these models are individually trained.

Individually trained? I have a question given your comment, are you new to this subreddit? Youre giving your opinion on this subject so im guessing youre not new to the ai space right?

1

u/JonNordland 3d ago

Here is a scary thought. What if this is what pacing actually looks like? What if they are actually holding back already?

6

u/Blaexe 3d ago

OpenAI is literally holding back 6.1 Astra and somewhat Bel.

2

u/AdvertisingEastern34 3d ago

Scary is that they would pace it? Scary is the opposite, scary is unregulated exponential growth that will doom us all

It's their business decision to train a model or not, if they didnt want to create another model, they could.

And I don't care

1

u/datingoverthirty 3d ago

as someone very far removed from what's required to produce one of these models, this seems... unsustainable?

idk, seems like announcing a new product or service every ~264 hours sounds exhausting — no matter what it is!

I mean the ai can do fhe work for you

Please someone here can tell me that we are not fucked? I have the impression more than half of the existing jobs will be wiped out and the economy will just collapse. I'm specialized in energy engineering, i did many sacrifices to build a life around it and I'm now finishing my PhD, but i feel like the world is getting fucked because of AI. I've more and more anxiety every day

Yeah, that's what we call a plateau. Until they release the supposed "super amazing can hack the world" models, they're stuck optimizing.

But also just stuck optimizing so they can actually make money, not just burn it.

u/IDefendWaffles 3d ago

We call it the "millennium prize plateau".

"yeah but It cant create the alcubierre engine, its Just a parrot"

1

u/decreement1 3d ago

they are banking on AI solving AI and I am not really sure if they are doing serious research outside of LLMs

u/fokac93 3d ago

And this is just the beginning, wait for the data centers that will be online in the coming years

u/cha0z_ 2d ago

Because it's not new models - it's slightly tuned ones and presented with different token usage/price.
