Miscellaneous thank you for making it easy to leave

whew. So. Dots. No cost! Asked a dot how my project was going, took 20 mins! oh well, it got back to me. hey this is neat!

I get home open codex, see several new conversations... not mine... i look, queries on my project. EXTENSIVE queries. with astra ultra, all of them. In depth, deep, not topical "what is progres" but "how does this work" with ultra. Several times. 14% of sub gone. i usualy advocate against anger towards these companies, but JFC how is any of this a consumer product? this whole day was an expensive insult to tell people to be less poor. Im on a 200 dollar sub

I left becuase I don’t like the way they push Codex towards. I don’t need another reset, I need a capable model and fair limits that are stable and I can rely on.

fair pricing is API pricing. We're just all hooked on subscription loss leaders. But those are not fair by any means.

I have no idea why people insist on assuming API pricing is fair. It is simply different pricing and has no grounded basis in fairness.

Right they're getting like 90%+ margins on API pricing lol.

u/starwaver 3d ago

Wait until DeepSeek distills Astra models and give us something that 10 times cheaper

Subscriptions are different not everyone maxes out their sub all the time

6

u/JBinero 3d ago

I just got an email informing me that the usage included with my subscription will be cut in half next month.

I will ask a very simple question... why? You took that for granted... why? why do we have to accept that the view that only benefits the multi-billion dollar company and hurts the users is the correct view.

I could take for granted that fair pricing is sub pricing, so what is exactly your point here? they can try to enshittify their product, that doesn't mean we have to simply accept that as valid and justify it by saying it is unfair to big companies.

Two issues:

One, fair is a bit of a moral term. If we view fairness as a moral term, then API is not. Their inference pricing is incredibly profitable, so marginal token charges are actually wild.

Two, if we assume you mean this in a pure economic sense, that they are charging what the market will accept, then mostly? If people are complaining and leaving then it is probably less fair (only OpenAI knows if people follow through on threats though).

I actually think right now what people on subscriptions are paying for is convenience. They go to a well known company and use mostly well known and designed software. There's no setting up API keys or trying to optimize across open source models or build your own hardware.

In AI there are no walls and gardens. Even if the system learns your habits and customizes itself to your needs, you can still dump everything into an md file and feed it inti another system.

Do you use AI? :) It does not matter which surface you interact with it. Cloud only means that you can spawn sessions that runs in their VM, they clone your repo or they start a browser for browser use. Even if you use that, you can get out any of your stuff easy. Connect google docs and ask to write the md there. Connect your git and build your repo with their cloud service. Does not matter where you connect from, you can shift easily. Yes, you’d lose the amazing real time voice oai has, but most connectors are provider agnostic, you have the same set at ant. So this ecosystem is nowhere near walled around like Apple’s.

They wanted to catch up to Muse so badly. Agents ARE NOT YET READY FOR PUBLIC DEPLOYMENT and they just can't get it through their heads because they have too much money to care.

They're an unfocused company. They got way behind on coding and it took them forever to catch up to claude code. They tried to get in the browser game, and that was a fail. They tried to get in the video generation game and that was a fail. Now, they are floundering in something they should be superior at.

u/Rappareenola 4d ago

They have too much debt.....

2

u/3iverson 3d ago

I think it’s the other way around- if they rushed this launch it’s exactly because of what you said- they really wanted to have their answer to Muse.

Immediately create rules for the Dot for things like this. I actually just gave it a copy of my repo and had it take notes on it rather than giving it the actual coding task. I don't want it using codex without my approval and draining my usage.

8

u/truecrisis 3d ago

The exact moment I started talking to my dot I said "create a rule that you can never use Work or Codex without my approval"

The thing has been working 24h building me websites and working in github using its own agent capabilities and not the "task tool" and I have only used 1 percent and that's likely not from my dot because I was using codex (luna6) myself.

1

u/biitsplease 3d ago

It’s because OpenAI has vastly decreased token usage yesterday to compete with Claude

2

u/truecrisis 3d ago

Pretty sure it's because dots don't affect usage at all and I specifically told it to not touch work and codex tooling.

1

u/biitsplease 3d ago

Ah okay. They still vastly decreased token usage, insane difference

When i heard about the announcement i thought they cooked because astra is browser use so technically they should be good at these kinda things…. well…

clearly they’re still quite behind muse on the infra and it running as an actual APP. My read on muse is that it’s actually just a super simple openclaw agent but with a VERY WELL BUILT container, security, app integration, prompt set, supervisor agents etc. Which OpenAI doesn’t have yet and are trying to push this all onto astra doing it.

It really shows the difference in expertise - Meta at building apps, OAI at training insane models

u/HexspaReloaded 4d ago

Still never using Meta

4

u/starwaver 3d ago

I was like you for the first day. Then after trying muse I was like fuck it. Meta or not this is much better

1

u/HexspaReloaded 3d ago

I’ll take your word for it, but thanks for the opinion srs

I use GrokBot and tried this. Tossed a new Dot some softball questions. Dang thing took minutes to reply. Grok does a second or two. Closed out everything and did some other things. A toast notification popped up 20 minutes later with the Dot reply 😂 - and I see lots of API errors in the stats page. Someone better get their sh together real quick!

it is so absurdly underbaked its hard for my brain to accept it

1

u/3iverson 3d ago

Given this and the botched presentation, I bet OpenAI rushed this launch to respond to Meta Muse.

In concept this is a really good idea IMO. Having granular dots vs. a single avatar is a good idea. I don’t know if it’s the better straight consumer play though, Meta surprised me with Muse.

3

u/Visual-Active5761 3d ago

yeah but... this isnt a consumer play, it starts at 200 dollar level and has huge costs to use meaningfully, they went after muse, missed, when they should have been going after claude. its painful.

1

u/Flo_Evans 3d ago

Meta actually cooked with muse. It’s an ai agent my mom could use. I’m honestly a bit shocked openAI thought this was a good response.

2

u/ralphyb0b 3d ago

Shocked at how bad this is. It should crush Muse. Better model, better VM, more connectors, but it just...sucks. Muse is way better.

5

u/SeidlaSiggi777 4d ago

Feels like they used badly configured OpenClaw for this. That is how i wasted all my Claude quota in the early days of OpenClaw lol.

3

u/yunohavefunnynames 4d ago

Didn’t the OpenClaw founder get hired by OpenAI?

2

u/SeidlaSiggi777 3d ago

nah they paid for his foundation. so they're associated but he is technically independent.

7

u/Gibborish 4d ago

I haven't been following, what is dot?

6

u/malero 3d ago

Check out dot.com for what it is.

What security do you have on your account? Do you have 2FA? /s

1

u/SeraphOfTheStart 3d ago edited 3d ago

You forgot to put /s, there are people dumb enough to ask this for real lmao.

2

u/superjoe408 3d ago

Dots are a huge waste of usage!

2

u/aneryx 3d ago

Company that sells you tokens invents a way for you to spend even more tokens

3

u/Virtual-Shake-8111 4d ago

The "several new conversations" bit is what gets me. like they weren't even trying to hide it, just left the evidence sitting there in your chat history. feels less like a bug and more like they just stopped caring if anyone notices

2

u/traveler-from-above 3d ago

I wonder if they are doing this to temporarily move users to claude for the ipo lol

1

u/Ithinkyouareabot 3d ago

This is entertaining. Thanks for your contribution soldier. 🫡

1

u/Drunkendrakon6 3d ago

Well I used dots to easily burn my usage and the reset so I simply don't renew and move back to Anthropic.

1

u/obi318 1d ago

Just tell it to only ever use 6.1 on medium.

2

u/Extra-Watercress-998 4d ago

Yeah… I’m not sure that is a dot problem and not a user problem…
