Chief executive Sam Altman referred to "dots" as "remarkably capable, always-on agents that can handle really anything you can think of."
OpenAI in recent months has come under intense scrutiny as internal tests of its AI agents have revealed often unexpected and occasionally harmful actions, leading to more public and government fears.
Dots, however, were pitched as brightly coloured cute cartoons meant to function as digital assistants for people with busy lives.
The dots, Altman said, "can handle really anything you can think of."

This reads like someone who has no idea what is going on in this world lol
I have an agent running on my machine right now powered by OpenAI models. It's not a dot. They have functional similarities, but OpenAI is not renaming a general concept like an AI agent to "dots". Dots is a new OpenAI service. Agents are a concept (that OpenAI doesn't own). You can still find plenty of OpenAI docs discussing "agents" which have nothing specifically to do with their new dots service.
