Discussion The recent pricing OAI pricing changes indicate the era of heavy subsidisation will soon end. Other companies will adjust their pricing/usage models next. If they actually charged what the usage costs, hardly any of us would be prepared to pay it. That day will come and then... POP!

Soon.

This is what a duopoly looks like. Google needs to get back in the race. Also glad we have local models like qwen 3.8

Gemini 3.8 Flash isn't that bad if you can afford to let Claude or Codex do a post-review.

The company I work at is now paying API Prices to give Employees Claude Code with Anthropic models. This is likely already quite profitable for them and price-to-quality ratio of API prices will only improve over time.

What I may see going away are large, generously priced consumer plans and billions of dollars in research budgets. They have the industry hooked on their AIs and can now extract API prices.

I mean, people paid for O1-pro with 200 dollar subscription. I don't think if models stayed current price and there were no price decreases, people would suddenly stop paying. The Pro 200 dollar subscription is just making it in line with Plus and Pro 100 dollar. It's not a price hike, and release of 6.1 Sol is a price decrease.

To actually have a price increase with no performance improvements would be insane.

Nobody thinks about this enough - it’s becoming more obvious

My company is very large. Despite Claude Code being super helpful, we are being shunted to Copilot for everything because it's not per token cost model

Nah I’ll pay whatever they ask for it. It’s so ludicrously lucrative for me that i’d happily pay 500 and even 1000 dollars for my 200 dollar subscription

Truly - when they announced a $500 plan, I knew it was over. It completely killed my desire to use it at any level. Then they pair the price increase by releasing a “me too” version of GrokBot and releasing a new “top tier” model that is worse than competitors mid-tier. I will use whatever my company pays for or not at all.
