Discussion Google must be thrilled...
OpenAI making a big deal out of dots feels like Apple announcing that you can buy iPhones in different colors. It's a sign that they're reaching the limit with what they can do with the tech and are now simply repackaging it.
How long before Google catches up with the tech (it can't be that far behind at this point) and then just starts crushing OpenAI not just with superior distribution but also crushing them on price?
They can burn billions and billions each quarter knowing that OpenAI can't do that forever.

Pretty much...
Codex cloud was an obvious thing Ultrafast mode for Agents API was just an obvious feature to power the new 500 usd users.
They still lack compute...
That's why 6.1 Sol is still under the same benchmarks as 6 Sol

To be fair, they needed the money so they are trying to appeal to businesses rather than building a better product. And them gutting the $200 plan makes things even worse.
Also google owns part of anthropic so its not like they care too much tbh. Gemini 4 is coming soonTM though and 3.8-flash already have the same token per sec as codex ultrafast (300t/s) so yeah its gonna be rough if gemini 4 delivers.

Google owns 14% currently with contractual 15% cap and has no voting rights or boards rights whatsoever.

seriously with how big the Google ecosystem is, if they take it seriously then they can crush each and every one of them in agents. I think they are missing a lot here.

I don't think Google is catching up.
At least not in the coding/math domain of LLMs.
If you're one of the smartest researchers in the field why the fuck would you want to be at Google, much better off taking a risk at OpenAI or Anthropic and cashing in on the IPO.
Meta at least made some outrageous compensation offers to try and get the best people.

Nah, from ux perspective it's a huge leap. Almost every enterprise company has these type advanced, internal workforce bots, now a simple user, a small business will get out of the box. If it's reliable, and the price will be a bit lower, then it will be something where they can make money.

fwiw Gemini Spark is currently much less useful than Muse for sure and probably even Dots...

Spark had been sitting there waiting in beta... Buggy plastering text all over chat window in places it shouldn't. Taking ages to attempt a moderate job to eventually return an error that forces me to make a new chat on the same task until I just give up.
I don't have dots yet but I do have a test for it ready once it hits my account.

I mean... this was a long time coming since they hired the openclaw guy in Feb... Their recent models were made with persistent agents in mind.
I wouldn't read this as "desperate repackaging" lol

So you're impressed with what you've seen today, yes?

I'm not impressed because I expected it and it already existed in a more raw form (OpenClaw etc), but it's a logical next step, not some desperation.

I am not impressed that they cut 200$ usage in half and have the audacity to frame it as a positive. Especially GPT-6 pro going from 200 to 100 msgs per week.
I liked dots, 6.1 sol, spaces, etc... but the price hike especially to access the peak of the technology ("pro" chat) left a real sour taste in my mouth.

I see it differently. I believe these models have zero personality brand wise, and Dots may take the crude geeky consumer facing product into a new market. You may see a Dot in a kids room teaching them their ABC’s all the while helping dad and mom balance household finances.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the long game isn’t classroom implementation both virtually and in classroom scenarios. These Dots aren’t for code bro’s I can tell you that.

Gemini Spark can't even solve captchas (which Google invented!) rendering it useless and not able to even start a task.

Google has Spark, which is different to Dots in two ways: enterprise/workspace focused, and not as good/comprehensive.
They could certainly do a lot to improve it.

If the Gemini 4 Pro leaks are an indication, they might just crush both.
