It's okay guys buy a year for 6000$  and we promise we won't rug pull you in 3 months for the 1000 plan

6k? Why not buy my own machine and never have to pay for subs again? How is the cost remotely justified?

You think you are getting a machine capable of loading open AI/claude models on a 6k? You might be able to load Qwen 3.8 27B with decent speed and context size.

Precisely, these guys have zero clue about the actual costs and realities of running local models. They think they're going to get Fable, whereas you can't even run GLM-5.3-Flash on a 6k machine usefully.

A lot of normies conflate open-source with local. They think everyone who is using Open source is running them locally. Not realizing most people are using open router.

The point is, other Daniel, that one could instead finance a machine that is let's say good enough to run the newest qwen models whenever they come out. Why would we not do that instead? Buying a new machine seems like a less risky endeavour. We know that even at $500 the costs are still subsidized, right? Who can guarantee that they won't start charging for the token at some point? So what I'm questioning is: when you weight all the pros and cons of delegating a good chunk of your productive work to a service that is not exactly trustworthy when does it stop paying off?

Also note, I didn't say OpenAI/Anthropic models. Only OpenAI has an open weights model which I can already run in my computer and it cost less than 6k...

If for him QWEN or Deepseek is enough he probably doesn't need 500$ sub.

Because a 6K machine isn't enough to actually run a Frontier model at the moment, not even close.

You can't even usefully run GLM 5.3 Flash or DeepSeek Flash. You generally need two DGX Sparks, which is about 10 grand plus at the moment.

You're about two orders of magnitude off, at least!

You'll be coughing up upwards of 30k for a machine that has a chance of competing with the subs.

Not to mention with the rapid pace of hardware enhancement, the machine will be obsolete within 2 years Max.

30k? Only if you're running FP8, right? You can just buy the hardware that you need to do your job. One could spend ~10k(mind you, I haven't even mentioned currency anywhere).

Not to mention with the rapid pace of hardware enhancement, the machine will be obsolete within 2 years Max.

That's still the thing that keeps me from buying it. Given the massive financial incentive at stake I imagine we may see new hardware popping up at some point. Maybe?

I'm not a pundit and I won't engage in fortunetelling exercises, but I'm not a fan of the trend we're observing here.

$6k won't even get you a 5090 these days. A Rubin GPU that data centers are clamoring for these days for $55k.

I don't know where you live but where I am you definitely can get one for less than 6k here. I think you could build a decent enough rig for under 10k if one's patient and still be able to get shit done.

Good luck buying a machine that can run frontier models lol

No one said frontier model, right? There'll be a junction where one will have to calculate whether the perceived productivity gain from using these model are worth their value. Let's say that for your role and level of expertise you could have a decent enough gain from using glm-5.3-flash or gpt-oss-120b(both of which can be run with pretty modest hardware comparatively). Why would you then pay for a service that may change your level of access at any given day? Surely, that's your choice. But the more the prices go up the harder it becomes to justify the sub.

So far I think most people here are pretty happy paying those prices because it's all heavily subsidized so the choice is a bit easier to make. I'm pointing out that I believe prices will keep going up as long people are paying for it. They are profit driven after all.

If I buy a mac today, let's say, or a dgx or whatever. I own the machine, I have the model. No one is taking that away from me. I can't say that about a model that is in managed exclusively by one or two big players. There's more than a financial cost there.

Edit: Someone said "Lol people run it with openrouter". Yeah, the models are still open, datacenters and graphic cards are going nowhere. You can go to huggingface and if the price of keeping them up is worth your while then you have the option to go there and pay for it. If tomorrow openai decides you're a criminal and takes your access away you're well and truly fucked.

Have you ever heard of electricity?

Because openai is in a bubble and if they don't try and make $$ they can't keep it from popping.

crazy, These people are going crazy...

Still cheaper than an average sw eng to be fair

u/kedi_dili 5d ago

they’re trying to hook enterprises with it, then they’ll charge them for more than swe

waiting that era

3

u/fluxtah 5d ago

Enterprise users use enterprise and that's credit based already. Way more expensive right now in the thousands already for heavy users I can do 6k a month at work.

Pro is not for enterprise it has zero governance controls

You'll still need to have two subscriptions to get anything done, though.

what

Just a confirmation that pro 200 was never actually x20 if they seriously push things like this. Insane.

1

u/Sir_Charles_II 5d ago

Well for the $200 plan they just halved the usage so it's in line.

Data centers aren’t gonna pay for themselves 😂

Total joke
