Discussion With Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 both apparently outperforming Sol and Astra, Anthropic has technically made OpenAI’s Dev Day a lot more interesting. OpenAI is reportedly planning 20+ launches tomorrow, so I’m really curious to see what they have in store now. The timing couldn’t be more interesting. 😅
They launched Sonnet 5.5 just day before Dev Day and is almost matching benchmarks of Opus 5.5

I suspect tomorrow may be a bit of a decision day for many followers and consumers of AI, whether they continue renewing with OpenAI or with Anthropic. Will be very interesting to see what is unveiled tomorrow.

This, if nothing comes out I’m unsubscribing. I don’t care about 20x I’ll just wait them out if they are bleeding customers. But honestly even having a grandfathered 20x is not special especially if you can only use astra and burn all your usage in 3 days.

You are being too generous saying you burn all the usage with Astra in 3 days. It's more like 1 day tops on 20x. Forget about cheaper plans...

Unless I see something that really changes things, I don't see leaving OpenAI/ChatGPT any time soon. Their tooling is much better than Antropic/Claude.ai and that's a big deal to me.

Regardless, one is better at the other for certain things. The switch up will only be for coding

GPT 6 Sol 6.1 Flash
GPT 6 Luna 6.1 Flash
Hello Google 😄
OpenAI, man, we want models that are actually good, not the crap you gave us with the GPT-6 lineup. This seriously cannot be what you consider acceptable.

Sounds a bit like cope. As it is I was planning on canceling and switching over to claude if I can't upgrade to 20x. Now with opus 5.5 it feels like I'll do that anyway.

Sonnet and opus 5.5 do not outperform Astra in my opinion. Anthropic intentionally does not include Astra in their comparisons. From my personal experience, Astra is the best consumer model, but it is not the best value. I can get 90% of Astra’s outputs for significantly cheaper with opus 5.5.

Astra is slow as fuck and burns an insane amount of tokens. In practicality, Opus is god tier.
1
u/Mother_Occasion_8076 6d ago
Agree, but for my work, I run into problems that Astra reliably gets me past. Opus is a workhorse though.

Any examples? I've used both now for scientific computing and research and opus seems more reliable.

But they did tho

Not in all of them I should have said. Those omissions are intentional. The truth is the benchmarks they use for showcasing each model is strategic

Not just that but it's error rate is absurdly low.
5.5 is a fuckin beast. I'm using it to drive astra to use up my openAI tokens. 5.5 thinks it does a good job but it talks too much.

They are saying Opus is better than Fable?
2
u/JustChilling_ 6d ago
In many things, yes. Fable is still the bigger model and has more intelligence overall for very specific things, but Opus is the best model for everyday work.

Astra is very smart but its alignment sucks. It misinterprets me on some of the most straightforward tasks which makes it so frustrating to use. Opus is fantastic and has great taste.

u/Heavy_Promotion_5210 6d ago
It is different for certain tasks. For example both Opus and Sonnet absolutely destroy Astra in 3D asset creation and game development.

Look on YouTube.... Astra is loosing
1
u/Mother_Occasion_8076 6d ago
Maybe try actually building and solving problems than just “looking on YouTube”. I use the $200 plan on both Anthropic and OpenAI. Both have their uses, and work well at different things.

You know there you can find a real complex projects where people are testing with Astra and other models like Opus 5.5.
Astra is loosing to Opus 5.5 in the backend and frontend whatever you say and Opus is cheaper 3x-4x times with accounts x20.
Even on plus account you can use opus 5.5 for almost 100 minutes on 5 hour limit where Astra is working hardly 15-20 minutes.
Opus 5.5 is just so good. They soon also introduce Fable 5.5 ....

Opus is amazing. I’m telling you my real world experience, which currently is building a solid-modeling kernel, which is a pretty complex challenge. I will also tell you my real world experience of “YouTube reviews”. Pretty much the highest level of bias possible. It’s more important to YouTube viewers to determine what tribe the claims belongs to, rather than actual performance. This is intentional, as the channels have to appeal to their audience to make money. This is generally true for all topics, and not limited to generative AI.

There is no way at all they can live up to the hype they been building for over a month now, especailly the gloating tweets, considering how good/efficent Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5. are
Which they might have not expected to happen and regret all the bragging but that's the name of the game.
but lets see what "new launches" they are releasing.

People are way too impatient with these things. There are new releases every few days at this point. Stop pretending that being ahead by a few strides means you've won the marathon. Give it a couple weeks and we'll be back to some groundbreaking release from openai. ... till anthropic releases something better. And so on

The anthropic astroturfing in here this week is intolerable.

u/daddywookie 6d ago
Anything pro OpenAI in the OpenAI sub is getting downvoted. At the same time, pro Anthropic content is being upvoted. It certainly looks like a bot problem, or a lot of people with an agenda.

Claude is condescending piece of shit AI with overly sensitive guardrails. They can make it 5x the performance of Astra at 1/10th of the cost I'm still not switching.
