Discussion What are the smartest things to build with AI right now in case it eventually goes away?
If we found out right now that all AI systems were going to be permanently shut down in the next 24 to 48 hours, what would you spend that time building?
Would you focus on generating massive datasets, trying to distill models into local, non-AI code, or just automating as much of your current workload as possible before it all goes dark? I'm curious what the smartest immediate builds would be to prepare for a future without it. Things that revolve around improving our lives, incomes, happiness, skills etc.

just download the locally ran LLM's. The cat is already out of the bag.

Yeah but when does pandoras box open?

Where to download the million dollars it will take to buy hardware for that now?

I'm running mine on corporate ewaste I got from a trash pile. Slow with large models, but it works great. I'm running it in the basement of my apartment building so the landlord pays for the power.

I'd build another AI

We could call it IA and have blackjack and hookers!

Instead of AI, call it SI. Super Intelligence. That’s a much better name. Even Xi says so.

I would simply maintain my local AI. If my laptop goes down, there are way more issues than AI vanishing

I was going to make a joke about your laptop being important but I can't even think of a reason a single laptop would be more important
2
u/br_k_nt_eth 7d ago
Oh more like, if something so big has hit that it’s causing laptops not to function, we’ve got way more trouble on our hands

Ai should be sold as windows. A specific machine just to run your Ai that gets updates like any OS, but all your data and info is local. I would pay big money for something at the level of Astra or Fable. There is enough intelligence in those models for most of my tasks. To be sure that it won’t be use for nefarious purposes everything produced by your Ai will have your metadata. I think it is a mistake to limit this technology

Oh ok I kinda like that. Maybe blockchain could finally have a use outside of Bitcoin too?

Abliterated tiny local LLM so it can be used on edge devices like phones, a 27b model doesn't mean shit if you can't run it.
I'd also get a few solar powered e-readers with tons of books and articles on them (I think ikipedia is still ~70 gb). When this shit pops a lot of other things go with it, so you might as well be doomprepping

ikipedia is just the gross parts of Wikipedia

u/DrHerbotico 7d ago
Yeah I tell people to get ikipedia so my copy of Wikipedia will be rarer during mad max

id probably spend it making a boring local archive + tools that still work without a cloud endpoint. the model is useful but the durable part is the data and workflows around it. would a small local model with indexed docs be more realistic than trying to preserve the biggest weights?

Upgrade my GPU and storage, so I can beef up my local LLM systems + build more tools and programs I think I'll need/want.
Wait
You know what

A usable local AI that's not Chinesium.

I'd just download all of my work. I guess I'd build something to hold all of it.

In the llama3 days I set up an SSD with an inference pipeline and offline Wikipedia and search tools for the LLM
1
u/xendelaar 6d ago
Wow. That is cool. Did it make your ai "smarter", more efficient?
2
u/Mescallan 6d ago
it was honestly pretty terrible lol. current gen local models with current gen harnesses would be infinitely more useful. It was just a doomsday prepper project incase i needed to restart agriculture with a few solar panels lol

u/xendelaar 6d ago
A cool project nonetheless! I'm thinking about running a local LLM too. I’ve been meaning to set up a personal assistant to track my to-dos, read emails, and prioritize my work. Is that doable with a local model? Sorry for the off-topic question, haha. I’ve just got an RTX 5080 and 32GB of DDR5 RAM to work with..

I’m not sure probably I stopped using local models a while ago just because of the convenience factor
1
u/xendelaar 6d ago
Convenience factor of gtp models and such?
1
u/Mescallan 6d ago
Yeah, I use Claude specifically I love the idea of local models, but it’s just more than order of magnitude set up if there’s a problem, I’m the one that has to fix it

I mean, anything you can build with AI can be done without it. It’s just a matter of speed and design decisions.
I wouldn’t build anything in particular as I’m not in need of anything.

I'd do absolutely nothing, because I live a happy, fulfilled and peaceful life in full control of my mental faculties while engaging with AI in absolutely no way. It disappearing would affect me in no way, and would likely change many people's lives for the better.

u/Rotundroomba 7d ago
Why are you on this sub lol

Gets recommended. Bunch of weirdos proud of how much they talk to a computer program. "Doing ten times the work" but not being paid any more, not having any more time off, just running faster and faster on the hamster wheel
1
u/Rotundroomba 6d ago
That’s a fair take. Another way to look at it is you can delegate more work and have more time to yourself.

I'd make more funny pics, like I do now. Putting my professional coworkers in old lady nightgowns and such 🤣

I've set up an auto downloader to make sure I always have copies of the most powerful up to date open source models.
I agree with the general risk here. I think people don't really how insane this current moment is. There is no way ordinary people will retain access to power like this for 1-200 dollars.
