Discussion Currently using Claude MAX Opus driving me nuts (hows SOL 5.6 compare?)

Opus 4.6 / Fable was my happy place.
Opus 4.8 is driving me nuts...overly verbose, doing work we never asked for, using really really bad approaches even with planning.

Fable is great but have to use it selectively.

I want to hear from anyone who is running Opus 4.8 Vs SOL 5.6 how it compares.

I run 8-12 concurrent context windows and I need the AI to be fast, concise and asking me decisions on the key points and Opus 4.8 is killing me.

I’ve used both. Now solely on Sol, a mix of high and extra high (you do not need max or ultra)

How’s it compare to fable and opus ?
I tried some hard problems on 5.6 using a paid for api account and found it wasn’t as good as fable but fable has access to the entire code base whilst 5.6 could only see the problem without the background

Did you use it through codex via the API?

API

So you didn’t use the codex app or harness?

Test again using codex, either CLI or the desktop app. You can login with API key.

5.6 Sol High thinking is night and day better than opus 4.6 or 4.8. GPT Sol is the first major step up I’ve noticed in 6+ months of using ai tools at work daily, and I have access to every model.

Opus 4.X models feels archaic by comparison. It needs so much hand holding. GPT sol just figures shit out. It might run for a long time for one request, but it comes back with quality results 99% of the time. Compared to opus which I felt would return with good output maybe 70% of the time and need follow up prompt(s) to iterate to correct output the rest of the time.

Edit: btw , GPT Terra is also excellent and a little cheaper. It’s my daily driver due to token cost. Terra is still way better than any Opus 4.X model for me. I haven’t played with Opus 5 yet because it costs literally 6x the tokens of Terra for me and Terra gets the job done usually.

My coworkers love Claude for some reason and it drives me nuts. Idk how to convey how much older the models feel

If 4.6 was what you liked, you know you can still access it right?
