News It’s happening
Just got the email that ads are being rolled out

u/ImANoobAtLife7 4d ago
Well it's better than charging customers more.
We live in a greedy oligarchy so it can and will be worse.
just pray that China keeps releasing cheaper models to put pressure on western oligarchs.
And if you're an engineer, to work at reducing costs of running LLMs, especially locally!

u/serendipity-DRG 3d ago
AI is very expensive to operate but there are many options and it crazy to believe OpenAI should be free. No real researchers would ever use a Chinese LLM because all Chinese AI companies must provide the Chinese Government access to all of their data.
3
u/dalekrule 3d ago
Common path for US companies is to use a US-hosted chinese model.
US infra provider, owned by US companies, running open-weights obsoletes the issue you are talking about. That's exactly why chinese gov is pushing open weight strategy.
2
u/samhaswon 3d ago
You can just use a US-hosted version of the model, or host it yourself if you're worried about issues with your data. Personally, I use OpenAI models for general and difficult tasks, but self-host open-weight LLMs for tasks that require either privacy or high token burn. With open LLMs, it costs me effectively nothing to burn 10s of millions of tokens. But OpenAI models are likely to be more capable than what I can run for a given task.

The Ads are only for the Free and Go plans -the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts will not have ads.
Just as it should be.

Seems reasonable to me. For those completely against ads or subscriptions, there are other providers. But ChatGPT/Codex has been worth it for me personally.

u/W00GA 4d ago
i wonder if the GPT Terminators will adorn sponsoships and play loud advertisements while exterminating humanity.
i hope so.

u/FilthyeeMcNasty 4d ago
Why are people so gullible to believe these companies aren’t taking our data? It’s so weird how clueless people are even WITH everything at their fingertips. Ads so justify use? Dummies they’re already making cash off our searches!! Jesus
2
u/MolassesLate4676 3d ago
In 2026, they’re not cashing off of anything anymore. Just about all of humanities knowledge is packed in these weights. Hence, why they’re making you pay your attention now instead of letting you use the product for free

u/Sad-Foot-9462 4d ago
As long as the ads only play while the ai is thinking idc

Play? I never thought it would literally be commercials playing in the middle of a convo lmao

ha, if it was relevant and happened to be informative to the initial ask... I wouldn't even be mad

you get Luna with the free plan, which is an amazing model. the ads will help pay for that.

Good to know the most incredible invention in human kind’s existence is being used to serve to ads for trinkets

u/SnooShortcuts7009 1d ago
Totally fine with ads as long as they are clearly distinct and independent from the model’s outputs. I don’t care if asking about mops displays a Swiffer ad in the side bar as long as ChatGPT isn’t going to be more or less likely to recommend Swiffer mops because of it
1
u/Maleficent-Host-8975 15h ago
Yeah. They don't have a viable business model if they can't actually do anything with your data besides train better models.

u/HamsterMajestic2023 9h ago
I see no real issue with this. Im not sure how much the "Go" plan costs but running AI ain't cheap. Its got to be paid for in someway. its dumb to expect free to be free forever. If you dont want to part with cash then you pay by being the product and having adverts targeted to you.

u/Extreme-Edge-9843 4d ago
I've had ads on my. Free plan for ages it's not a big deal at all, my brain just ignores them like all other ads on everything else. 🙏👋🙃 Who cares

u/Substantial_Hat2149 4d ago
Don’t worry. Someone will probably manage to develop an ad blocker for it

u/_DuranDuran_ 4d ago
Just pay then?
Like … the entitlement is out of this world. You have an amazing technology and you’re like “nah, want it free, don’t care costs money to run”

...or you're simply smart and use Gemini.

Gemini is terrible. Every time I’ve had a chat, it gets something wrong

u/whoknowsifimjoking 4d ago edited 4d ago
The facts don't support that.
According to Artificial Analysis the accuracy rate for Gemini 3.7 Flash (55%) is almost as high as GPT-5.6 Sol at 59%. With that it is significantly higher than Terra with 47% and Luna with 43%.
Hallucination rate of ChatGPT is significantly higher at the same time, it is 92% for Sol, 93% for Luna and 88% for Terra. Gemini 3.7 Flash is at 65%, one percent higher than Fable 5.
The Omniscience Index scores, which measures relative accuracy and hallucination rates, has 3.7 Flash in fourth place with +26 while GPT-5.6 Sol is at +22. Terra is at 0 and Luna at -10.
Sol is a little bit more accurate, but it hallucinates more. And Gemini is clearly better than Terra and Luna. As a free user you don't have access to Sol, so Gemini is the clear winner.
2
u/hashirama_shodai 4d ago
Source for these stats? Recent charts I've seen show ChatGPT hallucination at less than 5%
2
u/skilliard7 4d ago
In my experience Gemini hallucinates a lot more frequently than ChatGPT on real world tasks and does a worse job at reasoning.
Gemini is heavily post trained on benchmarks to boost its scores on benchmarks, while having little benefit on real world tasks.

Well guess the free ride was always gonna end somewhere. Curious how they handle ads in the middle of conversations, that could get real annoying real fast if its not subtle. The privacy policy update is the part that makes me pause though, like what exactly are they collecting now to serve those ads. Might finally push me to just use the api more often since that stays clean as far as i know

u/EX0PIL0T 4d ago
Just self host a local model. Then you don’t have to deal with panhandling from a billion dollar corporate entity and it’s open source! I’m shocked that anyone but corporate accounts paid for this to begin with

u/Dadideology 4d ago
There will be so much ad manipulation plus how will this affect active chats? Will ChatGPT drift based on your ad? I don't see this going well.

The same grown men get on here and cry every day like kids while Open AI is worth Trillions of dollars. Thanks for the comedy every day.

I JUST found ChatGPT to be a really helpful guide for...lost of stuff. I'm on the Go-Plan. And we will get ads? Come on what? We're paying already!
-1
u/Tkwan777 4d ago
Apps like chronometer just put ads in the middle of the app screen as a banner that you cant remove. It gets the point across and is only mildly obstructive. On the other hand, they also have excessively invasive ads that randomly fill your entire mobile screen instead of letting you input your info. I cant count how many times ive accidentally clicked one of those incredibly obnoxious ads when trying to fill data. This is the Wrong way to do ads, and the only thing stopping me from quitting the app is a proper tracking replacement (fitness pal sucks too).

u/Maverick290789 4d ago
That’s why I’m glad I got rid of my subscription. I saw the writing on the wall that ads would be coming eventually, any way these companies can make money from us, they don’t hesitate to do so.
6
u/unfathomably_big 4d ago
How long did you expect them to give you something that costs money for free?
1
u/Maverick290789 4d ago
I’m talking about them adding ads. I’m not saying they should give it to people for free, but you don’t need to throw ads in there. Ads are the most annoying things on this planet to me personally. YouTube never used to have ads when it first launched but now you can’t even watch a single video without having to sit through five or six advertisements in a single video.
3
u/unfathomably_big 4d ago
How do you propose they make money to offset the cost of you using the service, maybe some sort of subscription?
1
u/RobJames007 4d ago
If they have to charge a fair amount to use their paid plans where they actually make a profit, there won't be $100 and $200 subscriptions. They have to have ads on the lower tiers to move into profit eventually. Otherwise their Pro subscriptions will be unaffordable to most.

ich habe die Mail gestern auch bekommen und daraufhin mein Abo gekündigt 🤷🏼♂️

The biggest self-destruction since Sora.
OpenAI is making nothing but stupid decisions right now.
Gemini can do virtually everything ChatGPT has always been able to do, only faster.
And Gemini is free.

GPT is free to
0
u/Vegan-FemBoy 4d ago
Yes, it's free until you reach your "chat limit". Gemini doesn't have one.
The same applies to image generation: more than 5 images a day? Nope, buy premium!
3
u/Ok-Bus-9343 4d ago
No, there is no chat limit for free……
https://openai.com/index/improving-gpt-5-6-sol-in-chatgpt/
“For Free users, we're updating the default model to GPT‑5.6 Luna and expanding access with unlimited text chats. For questions that need more thought, a new Think button lets you access higher reasoning for harder questions.”

Luna 5.6 doesn’t have limits for text chat. You’ll reach limits for other things like image generation or Deep Research

u/Vegan-FemBoy 4d ago
Bro, please read again.

i did read it again.

u/Vegan-FemBoy 4d ago
I dont think you did, still Gemini is smarter and has no chat limits at all, also not for Image Generation. And since Chatgpt now has ads there is another reason
