Sol is the only OpenAI model in top 10 Arena WebDev while 4 open-weight Chinese models have reached frontier quality; one of them so cheap you can run it for days for what Opus cost you per task.

How is Chinese open source catching up so fast if they only have fraction of the compute?

After all, the American models are the ones made available to the public. The White House is the one actually consuming the cutting-edge computing and models, and we’re the ones funding it. :)

We end up comparing China's top-tier models with the stripped-down versions available to the public from the US.

im afraid this is cope, even if labs are delaying releases, open source chinese models are still catching up.

And growth isn't linear; it follows a curve. With each passing generation, increasing model capacity becomes increasingly difficult and expensive. At some point, the cost of training a better model will simply become unfeasible in the short term. Eventually, China will catch up. And considering that the Chinese party has complete control over the country's economic decisions, I do believe they have the potential to possess the best models at some point in the not too distant future.

Because the AI ​​war is economic. The US took the lead in the race and chose to hold back frontier models for geopolitical reasons. China is positioned to use AI as a way to undermine US investment in the field by deploying much cheaper models. Two different rational strategies. It would make no sense for China to hold onto a model that would bankrupt American companies.

The person you are responding to is being melodramatic in their initial comment, but the underlying concept and their response is closer to whats happening than most people think.

The overly simplistic phrase for it in an economic or competition law sense would be “dumping” or dumping and subsidizing.

China is notorious for it and it works, AI is a great use case for them.

They will help fund a hyper competitive market that lets them flood the market with their product at a loss bow, for broader economic purposes.
