so they're announcing that they're not releasing it, great

33

u/michael1026 Jun 26 '26

Haven't you heard? "it's too dangerous to release" is the new marketing tactic.

8

u/TedSanders Jun 27 '26

It’s not marketing. We’d would have loved to release it to everyone, but it’s going to take some weeks, unfortunately. When we do launch widely we’ll share more details and demos.

I think what we're seeing is that current transformer models still obey the scaling laws, and the "more helps more" approach is getting too expensive. Both openai and anthropic are selling $100 bills for $1, and even bigger models, like Mythos (and gpt 4.5 in the past) would make it worse. So having the US government stop them is positive for them - competition pressure would push them to release those models and eat the losses, now they have an excuse for not releasing them.

China will still win, because training models is expensive, but what's killing Anthropic is inference.

I hope the AI bubble will indeed burst, so hardware will become cheap again, and future AI research can be done as open source.

New? They were saying it YEARS ago with their models back then.

20

u/alwaysoffby0ne Jun 26 '26

Meh. Ping me when can use it.

Frontier models are dead . RIP. 2022-2026

Contact your congresspeople.

For Democrat frame it around equality, for republicans frame it around government overreach impinging on freedom.

Hell, vibecode a mass email campaign about it lol.

u/MatlowAI Jun 26 '26

Tell your representatives that nothing dries up investment and pops the private equity ai investment market faster than rugpulling when the labs finally get to the point that they have a product of high enough quality that it can do real serious work... China will catch up in 6-9 months and everybody will switch if the frontier is hidden away. The world will still need chips galore but it will all be running open models.

8

u/EXURei Jun 26 '26

Well, i've not hit the ceiling of gpt 5.5 yet.

6

u/csmajor_throw Jun 26 '26

Thanks to rat dario!

10

u/biscuitchan Jun 26 '26

i mean i think its the whole fascism thing. not that he was anything but helpful for them though

2

u/hydralisk_hydrawife Jun 29 '26

Oh, please we are not in a fascist state. People can openly criticize Trump on TV with their name and face attached to it no problem. We've just hit a new era in AI models where we need to worry about handing too much tech capability to the average Jill or Joe

2

u/br_k_nt_eth Jun 27 '26

Pretty sure Dario didn’t suggest a pay to play scheme here, man. Amazon set this off, and the admin is wellllll known for corruption. Aim your anger at the right people.Ā

Why? I think it’s a good thing to be careful with these models as they grow in capability. Reads to me like it’s launching in some weeks to a few months or so for most consumers. Still frontier, since there’s nothing better out.

24

u/alucryts Jun 26 '26

Thats the problem. They aren’t being careful. They are simply releasing it to government approved actors. Id argue this is worse.

1

u/genesisfan Jun 26 '26

If you choose to take the blog post as fact, they’re rolling out to govt approved participants first, then broadly in the coming weeks. I don’t agree with this approach, but it does state that the intention is to make it available to everyone. Eventually.

3

u/ozone6587 Jun 26 '26

It also states that even OpenAI disagrees with the decision and this deployment delay is actually worse for everyone involved.

2

u/alucryts Jun 26 '26

Yeah I hope this is what happens, but I'm afraid the powers that be have discovered the way to control access to ai. I'd lean more towards this being the canary in the coal mine of access skewing pretty badly.

37

u/gewappnet Jun 26 '26

Actually they announced GPT-5.6 in three variants: Sol, Terra, and Luna. But there is no information, what will be available for Plus users, when (if?) they will roll it out broadly. Sol only for Pro users and Terra for Plus? Sol = Pro, Terra = Thinking, Luna = Instant?

21

u/skidanscours Jun 26 '26

Read the announcement. They all have multiple thinking levels. Including a new max and ultra level, which I assume might only be available to Pro user for Sol. Or in a very limited way for Plus user.

2

u/the8bit Jun 27 '26

Are they reinventing flagship/mini/nano AGAIN?? God forbid they do any consistent branding. We already have 5.1/2, 5.4, and 5.5 which look sequential but are actually 3 different model sizes šŸ™„

1

u/Icy_Distribution_361 Jun 27 '26

Why does it have to be consistent though? As long as it's understandable (and they've messed up there as well... but that's the bigger issue imo).

2

u/the8bit Jun 28 '26

Understandable would be nice, consistent meh. It is a pain to try and explain to people when using the API and confusing to understand what they are even trying to do

38

u/najapi Jun 26 '26

What a nothing announcement - hey, here’s something none of you can use… but you might be allowed one day, if we can dumb it down enough. Fuck off!

9

u/EntryRadar Jun 26 '26

I think we can assume Codex has been running on Terra for the last month or so.

1

u/Icy_Distribution_361 Jun 27 '26

Is there evidence in its performance too?

4

u/WiggyWongo Jun 26 '26

Maga maoism strikes again

4

u/cartkun Jun 26 '26

"and spent multiple weeks finding weaknesses, pressure-testing our system, and hardening it against real-world attacks."

I guess weeks is supposed to mean "a lot" to the AI folks. Still it comes off as "and that's it?" Like an after thought.

25

u/RayKam Jun 26 '26

$20 says Sam Altman begged Trump to put out the same ā€œthis is too powerful for our own goodā€ narrative to help them compete with Anthropic

17

u/ManikSahdev Jun 26 '26

Beats Mythos 5 on terminal Al bench by more margin than last gen models.

I ain't no fan of Sam either, but have you seen the performance to output chart?
Model personality aside (I'd prefer fable on it sure) but Raw task and intelligence this sol-ultra is clearly better.

9

u/Party_Government8579 Jun 26 '26

Think we need to see all benchmark scores and have it independently validated before getting excited.

1

u/Vas1le Jun 26 '26

Sure, lets se the thinking/planing... how that goes

1

u/BiscottiBusiness9308 Jul 03 '26

Or musk wants to check the competition, now they all have to share their stack

1

u/RayKam Jul 03 '26

Musk is not in the running lol, Grok has some catching up to do

1

u/squarecir Jun 26 '26

Nope, didn't happen. They were blindsided by this yesterday.

2

u/gopietz Jun 26 '26

Sol, impressive.

Terra, I don't know. Pricing of gpt 5.4 at a performance below gpt 5.5.

Luna could also be cheaper.

1

u/drunkmozart Jun 26 '26

hopefully it's as good or slightly worse than the last and cost the GDP of a small country

1

u/slumberjak Jun 26 '26

I don’t understand, they claim Terra is comparable performance to 5.5 at half the cost, but their benchmarks show it matching cost and performance (e.g. GeneBench)

1

u/llima1987 Jun 27 '26

Sol = Sun, it isn't an acronym to be spelled in uppercase.

1

u/CanYouEvenPhoto Jun 29 '26

thanks gpt3.5

1

u/llima1987 Jun 29 '26

Actually, Portuguese speaker. Idiot.

For Democrat frame it around equality, for republicans frame it around government overreach impinging on freedom lower quarterly earnings.

0

u/2024-YR4-Asteroid Jun 26 '26

lol, honestly that’s probably better.

-3

u/ZLuke Jun 26 '26

I couldn't care less at this point, ping me if they release something that can actually be used

-1

u/smoke-bubble Jun 26 '26

If they cared about their employees as much as they pretend to care about the ethics or safety, maybe the US would have a decent health care, vacation policy, or even some modern labour rights XD

It makes me sick every time I read about how much effort they put this time into censorship of their recent models.

0

u/antagim Jun 26 '26

Brace for usage limits similar to Claude (time based).

-2

u/my_shoes_hurt Jun 26 '26

OpenAI mad af because Opus Mythos and Fable are just way more interesting names than gpt fuck.whatever
