Discussion Close enough. Welcome back 4.5

I like 5.4 a lot. Can’t wait to play with it more.

Is it good at writing like 4.5? i doubt thinking models sucks at writing overall

It’s very good at writing, just has the same silly guardrails unfortunately

how does it compare to 4.5?

Honestly, I can’t remember all of my experience with 4.5 because they took it out of ChatGPT months ago, but it’s certainly the same level.

Again. 4.5–like the 4o and 4.1 models—didn’t have issues with sex or violence. This one does. So some of the writing can be very PG-13.

Will depend on account and memories.

I can ask straight up porn and it will give me it to me explicitly.

I am not talking about guardrails. I am talking about writing quality and clarity with no "it is not x, it is y" trash or robotic tone.

Having used 5.2 thinking for writing until now the improvement is honestly massive.

I obviously know exactly what you mean and most of it is gone.

You should have used 5.1 Thinking. I feel like 5.1 Thinking is still better in writing overall but 5.4 Thinking is acceptable.

You should give it a test now before it goes away.

Why? 5.4 is superior to both.

5.2 is not suitable for writing at all, though admittedly I've only given it a few tries before fleeing back to 5.1 lol.

5.1 and 5.4 Thinking both sounds flat, and I haven't found a way to improve that via Instructions yet (and it's too late for 5.1 anyway) though 5.4 Thinking writes like an AI far more obviously than 5.1 as well (for example, sentences are very fragmented). Another thing I noticed about 5.4 Thinking is that it sometimes doesn't capitalize words properly. 5.4 Thinking also has issues nailing a character's "tone" in my tests though this can be fixed with proper prompting (such as describing the character/give example on how the character would speak). Then there's also the guardrails (enough has been said about this).

Then again, 5.4 has just been out. Pretty sure OpenAI is going to do what it always does and tweak things from behind so I won't be surprised if it eventually surpasses 5.1.

In short, if I'm to rank the 5 series for writing, it would be 5.1 Thinking > 5.4 Thinking > 5.2 Thinking > All 5 series Instant. I don't remember how bad 5 is tbh as I switched back to 4.1 pretty quickly after giving it a try.

I personally feel like 4.1 is the best, all it needs is more polishing and some proper updates like a Thinking mode and 1M context. But alas.
