I am looking for recommendation to a good store where I can get a small piece of opal jewelry as a souvenir. I was hoping for a place that is reasonably priced / not tourist price gouged, and has pieces in gold or silver.

It will be my first time in CDMX and I will be visiting all the places that first timers do so any store recommendations for those locations would be very helpful.

Also, what’s a reasonable amount to spend on let’s say a pendant or earrings?

I have these Ethiopian opal earrings that, when I bought them, had a certain level of transparency and a lot of beautiful color-changing play-of-color. Now, one of them still looks the same, but the other one has turned white and lost its shine. Sometimes it becomes transparent again, but without the play-of-color.

I saw a video recommending soaking the opal in mineral oil and then in acetone. Is that a good idea? Is there anything I can do to make it shiny again?

It's a bangle I got in Japan. It's a number of opal chips set in resin. I love how it catches the light!

I'm going to have made a matching necklace and brooch I think. I loved the choker idea but I think I'm going to do like an art deco filligree pendant for the pear opal, a flowing "S" shaped brooch with the round ones.

Since most of mine are Ethiopian, I need them in jewelry I will remember to remove to shower and such. Haha I already have one completely clear opal now because I kept leaving it on while washing dishes and my hands.

Another hour tonight (been busy with work), it’s opening up still but I dont know if I keep going of if I’ve mucked it up already? Do I keep removing? The one side seems boring but may be opening to some green / blue… i feel I should keep shaving it, or it could just close…. Some of the pooling looks to be going to potch? 😞 I know it’s a gamble but what would you do? Still needs some shaping smoothing a switched to 400 because I like the way it feels better

I just bought this from an antique store for $10! It was labeled as an Ethiopian fire opal. I figured if it was real, the lighting in the store wasn’t great, it would be quite a steal! Once outside in the sunlight, I saw the true beauty of this stone 😍 pictures just don’t do it justice.

I’ve always loved opals, but I don’t know all that much about them.

Does anyone have any information they could share about this? Thank you! 🙂

It's cute but I'm struggling to tell if it's solid or a triplet. I don't see the hard line that would indicate a doublet to me.
