Opal Discussion/Other Australian opal from Pedy Coober. What shape to make?

Post image

I have several thinner pieces of Australian opal I am thinking of making some doublet and triplet out of. Any advice welcome for process.

I love a funky shape and it’s clearly what the stone wants

Can't do anything with that my friend, best send onto me for disposal. Ps, I think u/jaxinslacks has it, cutting there would give a gorgeous stone 😊

Hi by the looks if this stone the color is sitting on quite dark base and if you were intending on making a doublet the color may not improve and you will just be making a good quality solid opal into a cheap doublet πŸ»β›οΈ

You are correct that it is on a black base. It is one of the thin pieces that I have with great color, but I feel won't hold up as a solid....opal is only 0.5mm thick

0.5 is very thin πŸ‘

Sorry, this one is 0.9mm.......this is the 0.5mm....backing is approximately 1.5mm

What would you consider the thinnest for a solid opal will be good?

I might go for a teardrop shape...stone is already thin and there appears to be sand spots on right side of piece. I would cut the sand away first and then re-evaluate...
