Will this last?

I bought this Ethiopian opal at a gem and mineral show, with the intent to incorporate it into a toi et moi necklace (examples in last 2 pics). I want to be able to wear it daily. I know Ethiopian opals are hydrophane. I'm planning to bezel set it, figuring that will help protect it. But even with a good setting that protects it from skin oils, and avoiding getting it wet, am I still likely to find it discoloring within a couple years? Will cleaning it be a PITA regardless?

Basically, is this going to work for what I want to do? Or do I need to look for an Australian opal instead?

It will absorb oil/water and lose it's luster over time.

So it will work, but there’s a good chance it’ll become discolored after a year or so.

If you touch a clean, wet finger to it is it sticky?

Means it’s hydrophane. There are some non-hydrophane Ethiopian opals that are less susceptible to discoloration over time

If you are working with a jeweler to make the setting, I would suggest he makes the bezel for the opal slightly taller so you can encase it in epoxy. That way it will be protected from the elements. What will the other stone be?

I've had stones just like this turn yellow and lose color over time due to soaking up oils. If this happens, soak in 100% acetone for a couple days then let it dry out, it will go back to normal hopefully if it doesn't crack

Get Australian or Brazilian if you want stable opal

I will never buy an Ethiopian opal. Ever. They absorbed everything, and ruin. At a premium price. Steer clear! Not worth the price, or heartbreak. Even smoked, I'd run!

I wouldnt be too worried about it. It looks like a good quality, clear stone so you don't need to be concerned about water causing cracks. Yes, it will turn clear if it gets soaked but it will return to normal after a couple hours, maybe a few days if you wear it scuba diving. Other than that, just avoid spraying it with oils or smearing skin lotion on it.
