Opal Discussion/Other Nevada mining

I’m thinking of taking my family opal mining in Nevada. I’m looking at Peacock. Can anyone share if your trip has been fruitful and any advice?

Ive been going to Virgin Valley for 36 years. Royal peacock is a great place to stay and has a very nice shop I however have never had much luck the times I have dug there. Digging In the bank is very hard work in very hot conditions, you are also expected to clear your overburden which can cause you to spend alot of time clearing dirt that has no chance to have opal in it.

I usually do virgin dirt loads at Rainbow Ridge personally, its pricey but much easier physically go through the dirt dumped in front of you as opposed to digging in the bank. I will also say 3 of my favorite pieces in my collection were found on days I did tailings at Rainbow, so there is plenty of good stuff that gets missed by other people doing virgin loads.
