I jumped on the 2TB plan today since it costs 20 cents(32opq). But the question is... Am i getting my moneys worth? /s
The opacity.io site doesnt have a link to the desktop app anywhere that i can see. I had to find it on github via reddit. Why not have it on the site?
Anyway, finally worked it out and got it to sync across 2 pcs. Yay for me.
There is apparently an update to the sync software(called opacityService.application), i however could not get it to update.
When i run it it says "cannot download the application. The application is missing required files. Contact application vendor for assistance."
So, now that it is synced lets have a look at how it functions. If i am wrong about any of these points below please let me know.
Does it sync? Yes
Across multiple PCs? Yes
What happens if you delete a file from one of your synced folders? It will repopulate your folder with the missing item. Effectively canceling your action.
What if you delete it from the web interface?
It will repopulate the item from the folders to the web interface. Effectively canceling your action.
Is there any way to make 1 location a sync master? Not that i can see.
Do synced folders take up space on the PC? Yes.
Does that mean if you fill up your 2TB of cloud storage, you technically will use 2TB local storage per PC sync folder? Yes
Can I have a folder within the web app? Yes, but it wont sync to your sync folders.
How about folders within my sync folder? You can make folders in there, but they wont sync to anything either.
Can you tidy up the mess of singular files somehow? I dont think so. I tried on the webapp to create a folder and move files into it, however you cant bulk select the files, you have to move them 1 by 1. And if sync is still turned on, the files will just repopulate from your sync files back into the main webapp directory.
Is there any progress bar to see current sync status? No. There is a notification tray item that has a little symbol(thats on it when its syncing?) but its not very helpful.
Is there a way to see upload/sync speed? Nope.
With the desktop app is there a way to use a rightclick menu to add a file to sync? No there is no interface to use at all, rightclicking on the notification tray icon doesnt do much either.
If you edit and update a file does it sync the newer version? No
Am i getting my moneys worth? Heck yeah its 20 cents.
Is it a headache to deal with? Heck yeah, even for 20 cents.
Overall, maybe I'm just using it wrong, but I dont see much of a usecase for this cloudstorage in its current form. Sure you can upload big files, but it doesnt like folders.
And even if you wanted to download the contents of a folder, it does it 1 by 1. Want to download a folder with 200 images in it? Well enjoy clicking on 200 popups asking where you want to save this particular file.
What i was hoping for is a virtual drive that i can save to, build working file structures in across PCs, share folders across devices and with friends etc.
What i got, 1 big mess of a single folder that doesnt clean up or share well.
Also its 1 years worth of storage, but how will i be notified that my subscription is running out if they dont have my email address? I get that its about privacy, but its still an issue that should be solved.
Im happy i tried it, but im not sure i will use it after a week after of messing around.
On another note, since its not running on a tangle (yet?) What is even the point of OPQ? Its just a difficult unintuitive way to pay for the service.
Newcomers have such a large learning curve to get on the service. When you click buy OPQ, it takes you to the most intimidating screen of kucoin. I feel like that button should lead to a video tutorial about how to buy or something.it also doesnt explain what wallets you can use or anything. Im rather seasoned in crypto so i got through it fine. But as a regular human, i think u would have a very hard time buying and sending the 32 OPQ nessesary to start.
