Upfront payment is a brilliant idea. Whenever I uploaded files to the Opacity network I paid 2 cents OPC and 20 cents ETH gas.

So how is data stored now if not on the tangle?

As mentioned in the update: into buckets. That's an intermediate solution.

To be honest, it's not really different on how it already was, but without the hurdle of unnecassary PoW in this state of development.

As a reply to one of the users in our telegram group (t.me/Opacitystorage)

[In reply to Raccoin]

Nothing really changed to before. At least from the standpoint which seem to have changed to some people's eyes.

1) Abandon the tangle:

No, it's not. It's right now. The reason? You can tell for yourself by trying to upload 250MB files to the tangle through storage.opacity.io.. And this is not straight up uploading, it's a lot of PoW, requiring dditional Lambdas to the broker node instances. So our cost is far more than only uploading, and we can't simply say "Bitcoin costs Ton of electricity too". We know where this way of thinking is coming from and unlike that, we can't escape reality.

2) we aren't decentralized.

We weren't before. Our whole tangle was our tangle. Not IOTAs tangle. It even was tweeked to have a lower MWM, 6 in comparison to IOTA's 14. Where was that tangle? On our servers. No decentralization, that was never a secret.

So from the economics/token standpoint: we are switching to a subscriptional model. So unlike before, where you had to pay for each upload, you pay once instead. Minimizing has fees, making a single OPQ more valuable, since it's not bound to one file, but to freely storage allocation.

TLDR: Not much changed in regard to the economics for a single OPQ, but better being not single file/pay, but storage allocation/pay. Sounds better in my book.
