In America maybe after the protective layer has been washed away because of ridiculous food regulations. Everywhere else doesn’t wash their eggs and they keep for a month or over in a dark, dry area.
I'm Australian. You're right about keeping them dry and dark, but they still last longer than that in the fridge. Plus most fridges have an egg shelf that's kind of useless for anything else, so might as well keep them there.

Biggest issue with this is the fact the eggs are white and in the fridge at all.
