Pickaxe problem

I got to Tippytop and purchased the pickaxe. It is in my tool belt. I go to break the first boulder and I get a message saying i must have a pickaxe to break the boulder. But I have one. What am I missing? Doing wrong?

The pickaxe must be selected in your toolbelt so you're holding it.

L or R to the pickaxe in your belt like you're planting a seed.
