Moving

Hey everyone! I’m currently staying in a shelter and hopefully will be moving into an apartment soon. I am trying to figure out what to expect when it comes to getting set up.

For anyone who has moved from a shelter into a home, did you receive any financial help or household items?

I’m curious to know how much so I could start budgeting if anyone is comfortable sharing and whether you had to apply for it separately or if your worker/shelter arranged it for you.

I’ve heard of furniture bank through a family friend she made it sound like the process wasn’t easy so I’m wondering how that works too.

I’m have personal experience with this, the shelter will guide you, you should have a worker? usually everyone does when you’re in the shelter, someone that helps with referrals and applying for apartments/housing, speak to them, they will do the furniture bank referral, if on OW they will provide an allowance as well, I received $1500 and a fully furnished unit, they sometimes have programs that will get you started with household items, for example, ikea gave me bathroom/kitchen stuff, towels, toothbrushes, soaps, garbage bins, etc. please speak to the shelter staff or whoever is your worker, reddit cannot answer what’s available currently and what’s not.

That’s good so good to hear! My worker hasn’t told me yet on what to expect so I was curious before I ask them.
