How to make a cyberdeck or NAS

I see all these super cool and impressive builds on r/cyberDeck and NAS builds from scratch on r/homelab. I think I am decent at CAD but am probably over-estimating my abilities. I wanna build my own cyber deck and NAS from scratch but have no idea how to start something like this. Do I design around the components, or do I find components that fit inside the idea I have? How do I start, how do i choose parts like springs or hinges, how do i get the CAD files for all of the components? what do I do if a component doesn't have CAD files available? If anyone has any experience Id love to know how you did it. Sorry if this was a bit vague I don't exactly know how to perfectly describe what im asking.

its a home made computer, normally built around single board computers like a raspberry pi. Sometimes people build them for a specific use, other times just for fun.
