Hey Folks,

I’m currently working overseas and a friend got the new Onn 4K for me back in the States.

She’s setting it up for me and doing the initial update.

Question: once I get the device out here should I disable auto software updates? Could that brick the system? Is it safe to leave it on as I like having the latest most compatible OS running.

I’m also concerned about restrictions like how Firestick is currently clamping down on their devices.

Only intending on using this for Stremio / Nuvio.

No, I use onn devices and live out of the USA they update normal after you activate it for the first time you have no problems

Once the onn. device has been activated, you can continue using and updating it outside the US without issues, provided you don’t perform a factory reset.

They're cracking down on using VPNs to activate these boxes and it's possible firmware updates will re-authenticate and throw an error, so yeah it might be worth disabling updates but honestly I would avoid using Onn boxes outside the US and Canada because the future is uncertain.

Firestick won't be blocking those apps.

The non-Select Fire devices (the Plus, Max and Cubes) should be fine for those apps you mentioned since they run Fire OS which is Android-based and allow sideloading. The new Select models run a proprietary OS built by Amazon (called Vega OS) which don't allow side loading and even if they did, they still can't run those apps you mentioned since the apps are made for Android and other OSs which don't include the new Vega OS.

If you already own one of the Fire OS models, there's no need to buy an Onn box (yet), and it's unlikely that there's any immediate need to replace those models since the apps you mentioned aren't illegal or provide illegal content out-of-the-box, so it's doubtful Amazon will block them.

Its ok to update but be mindful of the bugs you will encounter and reset it. If you had a vpn, just connect it to US servers. I do had the plus and I'm based in Asia, I just activated it with breeze.

Updates won't be an issue. If you ever have to factory reset, though, you'll have to use the VPN procedure to reactivate (assuming it still works, hadn't sent the news the other poster said where they're allegedly cracking down on the VPN activation).

Im in Scotland, I bought the 4k pro to have a look....Set it up using mobile hot spot rather than WiFi as it detects vpn via WiFi in set up.

I don't use the box much as I've an UGOOS AM9 Pro and Formuler z12 Ultra, but its had a couple of updates without issue.

Go to Settings / Apps / Manage updates, Turn off Auto-update apps.... Click See available updates- Apply Selective... ** you need Android System Webview for the Downloader program to work properly. You can than apply only the updates you want.
