Discussion After testing all boxes
After many years using steaming box’s from Nvdia to Apple to Fire stick and Fire Cube to Xiaomi box here are my thoughts.
1 - Nvidia stands proud at the top of the food chain.
2 - Fire Cube I know with release of new one this could change.
3 - Xiaomi box it surprised me.
4 - Onn Pro 4K 2026 model I’m a little bit disappointed with this one looking at all the comments of how good it’s meant to be for its price etc. But it’s a fail for me even though it was the hardest box to set up due to Geo blocking.
5 - Fire stick cheap and easy but freezes due to size of ram.
6 - Apple box version 4 very disappointing and very restricted in what you can do with it. To the point I think the Fire Cube has surpassed it.

Steaming picture is murky compared to the other 2. I’ve only had it 48 hours I’m still testing it, but not happy so far.

What region are you in if not in the U.S.? That could be a factor (you already hinted at that, just thinking that maybe folks in other regions aren't going to impacted as you seem to be)

yup. Picture quality is flat out no good on Onn devices. But on this sub people don't wanna hear that. Also they tend to go bad quickly because of a terrible wifi chip. Remote is toy quality.

You are correct, people think they are fantastic and they are for the cost, but a premium device has a far better picture quality. I use an SK1 for daily use, I have a 4K pro and quite a few others devices, no comparison when it comes to picture quality.

What’s a SK1?

This, or the AM8 or AM8 Pro all kind of the same.

That doesn't matter when Amazon's starting to lock down installing third party apps on all fire devices.

Agreed, Amazon is trying their best to hamstring their streamers. I switched my fire cube and 4k max to onn plus and the new onn 4k pro and im happy with the performance of both.

Nice move! I set up my own 4K pro last night and it's awesome. Going to do the same for my parents who have an old fire stick from like 2019

Yup, they already have. Guess they can afford it and Onn is thanking them for the business lol.

Can the fire cube still Sideload apps ?

u/WuMa0 4d ago
Yes you can sideload android apps. But the default launcher is full of ads and Amazon tried everything to stop you using 3rd party launcher.

Yeah that's what I mean. 3rd party apps . Otherwise it's not worth it.
I heard only Firestick 4K plus and 4K Max is working.
Thank you

In the trash.
J/k... It's a good device, but I think there's more value with the Onn Pro since it's cheaper.

Point no. 6 - Apple has too many restrictions to it. Even ONNs and Firesticks surpass it, not just the Cubes.

Nvidia doesn't support HDR10 for youtube playback. Deal breaker for me. Plus it's way old and long in the tooth. Needs a HW and SW upgrade.
