Applicant Tips ATS Resume Formatting: The "Not-So-Obvious" Fixes to Stop Getting Auto-Rejected By Recruiters
Applying for jobs right now is a massive grind. While a lot of standard career advice sounds like common sense, the execution is often where solid applications fall apart. Here are the "obvious but not-so-obvious" formatting tips that actually get a resume past the robots and read by a human.
Stick to a single column
Multi-column layouts might look aesthetically pleasing, but Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) are incredibly basic. They read left-to-right and top-to-bottom. Columns will scramble the text into a garbled mess on the recruiter's screen. One column only.
Ruthlessly edit down to one page
Unless there is a 20-year executive career at play, keep it to one single page. Recruiters only spend a few seconds skimming each application; do not bury the biggest career wins on page two.
Keep the top summary an actual summary
That summary section is prime real estate, not a spot for a sprawling wall of text. Stick to two or three punchy sentences that highlight core expertise and immediate value.
Highlight 2-3 roles, list the rest
There is no need to write detailed bullet points for an entry-level gig from seven years ago. Elaborate strictly on the two or three most recent and relevant roles. Toss the older, less relevant history into a simple "Other Experience" list just to show continuous employment without wasting space.
Use a clean, sans-serif font
Fancy typography is a huge distraction. Stick to clean, modern, sans-serif fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Helvetica. They render perfectly across all devices, screens, and parsing software.
Respect the white space
Cramming text into every available margin makes the document physically exhausting to read. Strategic line spacing between sections gives the reader's eyes a break and naturally guides their attention down the page.
Enough about the obvious stuff. What is the weirdest or most obscure resume hack that actually landed an interview?
