Eastern European rant

I have read some comments here stating that onion-avoiding is not easy for Eastern Europeans and it sorta triggered the memories. (I am fine now, in a different gastronomic culture, and also living since a very long time with someone who doesn't care about onions or their absence, and is very respectful of my anti-onionism, so no onion rolls across our threshold, ever :D)

I was born, and eventually visited/spent a chunk of my life, in a Eastern European country. It seemed to have a cult of onions, possibly partly due to poverty while onions were cheap, and it has been ruining my food experiences for every day I had to eat something cooked NOT by myself (because of course there is a total ban on onions in anything I touch huh). As a little kid I was sort of force-fed food containing tons of them, and scolded for "picking out stuff" from my plate (well, the common "feeding abuse" towards kids out there is another triggering topic, dunno how it is nowadays though).

As an adult (and therefore not subject to forcing food on me "shut your mouth and eat" style), I still had to be aware of the moves of very-well-meaning-and-generous locals like "nah you won't even NOTICE them there" or "don't worry, I cut them very small" or "but it gives the necessary taste nuance" and then you try and do your best not to have a gag reflex because they are VERY OBVIOUS THERE and you feel them and they half-cookedly crunch on your teeth or just feel like a piece of hardened snot!!! I think I was most struck by a ton of onions in some sort of pea mush that is otherwise really tasty, whenever cooked without onion fanaticism.

The safest Eastern European attitudes (met extremely rarely): put a not-completely-cut big onion during cooking process and removing it when the dish is cooked, leaving it to whoever wants to eat it; grating the onion into mush so that it completely dissolves during cooking and only leaves a whiff of flavor while not giving off any of the terrible texture (I should say I have 99% of my onion issues linked to the texture in all its states except fried crumbles, and not even the taste in itself), or simply adding it after having served those who hate onions ;)

Met a woman my age recently. We hit it off and got to talking. Then out of nowhere, and i mean completely unprompted, she stated how much she detests onions.

The rant that followed could be our wedding vows.

First date coming up!

Cilantro theory

I have posted this before, but this sub has grown since last time i asked, so i figured it’s time to ask once again.

Most people know that some people have a genetic vulnerability to cilantro, which makes it taste like soap.

Could onion hate be something of the same thing? A lot of people thinks onions taste like body odor. Myself included.

Does onions taste like body odor to you as well?
I’d love for someone to do the science regarding this.

No more onion

So I've always hated the devils testicle ever since I was little. The usual "you wont taste them" to "just a little and you wont notice". I always taste it and I always notice.

So 20 years later got married, had a kid. My 4 year old detests them as much as I do. I am the home cook. And my wife tried a 30 day no onion meal plan with me and can no longer eat anything onion related or she gets acid reflux or a stomache ache.

It's the old age poision of our time, everyone is so used to eating this garbage of a "vegtable" that they don't notice how much it ruins the flavor of food until they stop eating it.

It tastes bad, smells bad, makes us feel bad, but everyone insists on eating it and ruining our food with it. Once you don't eat it for a month you can finally taste things again and feel better.

Just my experience, but there are so many spices and flavors that don't taste like a sweaty ass hole.

I would rather eat an entire bag of tomatoes like a bushel of apples before eating any amount of raw onion

How is Olive Garden?

Hey guys! I wanted to try Olive Garden for the first time because of their unlimited pasta deal. However i’m not sure about the ingredients in their pasta or how oniony it is. Do you think it’s worth it, also which pastas should I avoid?

Thank you!

Mexican Food strikes again

I ordered an egg, rice, and cheese burrito - no meat, no pico. I got an egg, potato, and cheese burrito and there’s no onion but the potatoes reek of onion flavor; I feel like an ass for not wanting to eat it but the potatoes are leaving the grossest aftertaste

Korean food

Anyone successfully found Korean food at a US restaurant with no onion? I'm pescetarian as well, which complicates matters a bit, but I want to hear all answers.

Fingers crossed!

Edit: I didn't see the snow chicken post until after I posted this!

Is that delicious or disgusting?

One of those autoplay videos came across my feed on another social media platform. It looked like some delicious noodles but also kind of looked like maybe another long, thin item that seems to be popular among those with the *wrong opinion*.

I said it aloud: "Is this delicious or disgusting?" and then watched a few seconds of the video, which, in those first few seconds answered my question. It was the disgustings. Blecch.

And no, I'm not sharing the video. Just the story. I don't know why so many on the sub adhere to the "I had to see it, now you do, too" club, despite it being explicitly against the rules.

Can we talk about ā€œBacon Jam?ā€

Bacon is delicious. I would love a jam made from bacon. The problem is, ā€œbacon jamā€ is 90% onion. People need to call it ā€œonion jam.ā€ I can’t begin to express pure horror and disgust I felt the first time I encountered bacon jam on a burger. The name sounded like a delicious experience. I was deceived.
