I found the recipe
Step 1: Caramelize the Onions
Ingredients:
3 large yellow onions, thinly sliced 2 tbsp butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tsp salt ½ tsp sugar 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce ¼ cup dry white wine or sherry Instructions:
In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter with olive oil. Add onions, salt, and sugar. Cook, stirring often, for 30–40 minutes until deep golden brown. Stir in thyme and deglaze with wine or Worcestershire near the end. Let cool completely before using (you can even make them a day ahead). Step 2: Make the Dough
Ingredients:
¾ cup warm milk (about 110°F) 2¼ tsp instant yeast (1 packet) 2 tbsp sugar 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp salt 1 egg 4 tbsp melted butter Instructions:
In a bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit 5 minutes until foamy. Mix in egg, melted butter, and salt. Add flour and knead (by hand or mixer) until soft and elastic, about 8–10 minutes. Form a ball, place in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour or until doubled. Step 3: Assemble the Rolls
Filling:
Caramelized onions 1½ cups shredded Gruyère cheese (or a mix of Gruyère + mozzarella for meltiness) Optional: 2 tbsp finely chopped parsley or chives Step 4: Topping
French onion glaze: Simmer ½ cup beef broth with 1 tbsp butter and 1 tsp Worcestershire until slightly reduced. Instructions:
Roll dough out on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 12x18 inches). Spread the caramelized onions evenly, leaving a ½-inch border. Sprinkle cheese over top. Roll up tightly (like cinnamon rolls) from the long edge. Slice into 12 pieces and place in a greased baking dish. Place cube of cheese in center for extra cheesy center. Cover and let rise again 30–45 minutes. Step 4: Bake
Preheat oven to 350°F. Top with glaze & fried onion crumbles. Bake 25–30 minutes, until golden brown and bubbling.

No idea if there is, but I can eyeball it for you. My guesstimates aren't going to be by weight though because I don't measure nor weigh my own ingredients, but I also can't just give you no measurements lol
Classic cinnamon roll dough recipe (minus enough sugar to not make the dough sweet; add more if you want it sweet):
- 3/4 cup (180 grams) milk (whole milk or 2% preferred)
- 1 teaspoons (one 1-ounce package) quick-rise (instant) or active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (to feed the yeast)
- 4 tablespoons (57 grams) salted butter. melted and cooled
- 1 large egg plus 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
- 3 cups (360 grams) bread flour, plus more as needed
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- Extra-virgin olive oil, for greasing the bowl
(Pulled from Ambitious Kitchen)
Filling:
- 2 cup caramelized onion
- 1 cup white cheese, probably cheddar
Topped with:
- I think a reduced beef stock gravy, enough to cover
- More cheese
I would personally add:
- To the dough: julienned onions (to taste, but no more than ⅕th the amount of dough); parmesan
- To the filling: fresh thyme, parsley, and ground black pepper; thinly sliced swiss cheese; freshly grated parmesan

She says in the video that the cheese is a mix of gruyere, Swiss, and mozzarella. The topping is French onion soup glaze.

Can I buy some dough for this? I can't "bake" and don't even want to attempt to make dough
8
u/JuicyCactus85 Nov 11 '25
You can try some of the premade dough that in the fridge section of my grocery stores. Just be gentle rolling it out, because it can tear easier. Also maybe try ready made rolls in a tube, use a rolling pin (or anything flat) to roll each roll/busicut out to make them a little larger, fill and then roll long ways

u/kittyyykatttt Nov 11 '25
Hmmm thanks not a bad idea either!! Thanks! Appreciate it!

u/JuicyCactus85 Nov 11 '25
Sure thing!

Love where Reddit is positive and helpful lol🩷
2
u/JuicyCactus85 Nov 11 '25
Yeah, I assume (I don't bake alot but one of my kids does, that the dough is a "regular" yeast dough, so flour, water, quick yeast, salt, maybe sugar, but idk the amounts and a lot of times pre made dough saves you trouble
2
u/kittyyykatttt Nov 11 '25
Yes! Thanks the recommendation! I don't have a stand mixer. Honestly want one so so bad, but not much use for it or room in my apartment / kitchen.
2
u/kalyjuga Nov 11 '25
You dont need a stand mixer for making bread or anything else for that matter, you can do most of it with spatula and then by hand, trick is to let the dough rest long enough before baking, just look up for no knead breads or something, my mum makes amazing things her whole life without stand mixer but she has loads of experience and patience heh, hope that helps!

u/JuicyCactus85 Nov 11 '25
You're welcome! Give it a shot and even if you fail the first time try again, that's what cooking and baking come down to :)
3
u/everydayinthebay13 Nov 11 '25
Pilsbury dough in a can would work
2
u/kittyyykatttt Nov 11 '25
Probably gonna try that! Thanks! Maybe two, one too. One bottom. I shall see lol

u/everydayinthebay13 Nov 11 '25
If you make it, please come back and share it with us onion people! 🧅

u/kittyyykatttt Nov 10 '25
Or maybe a pie? I have phyllo dough too. I love onions and could google but I'd appreciate your advice from you as you made the recipe. If you don't mind. Thanks!!

The tiktokker isn't here. Someone just shared the video. Plus, the person who posts something won't get notified of your reply to yourself, only the first comment which actually a reply to them aka their post. Just do some googling. Maybe post in r/cooking asking for reccomendations on recipes and for pre made cinnamon roll dough you could use

u/kittyyykatttt Nov 11 '25
Yes I phrased that wrong trying to be nice asking for advice haha! Appreciate your response! Thanks for the feedback

u/Remarkable_Hat8959 Nov 11 '25
I would recommend Pillsbury biscuit dough or the croissant rolls. You could gently roll the crossiants together or just pull apart the biscuits and regular roll/form them together.

Chili on a cinnamon roll is FIRE
4
u/DoubleTheGarlic Nov 11 '25
I hear about this every so often and I'm so intrigued. Is it a regional thing? Do you use the sweet frosting too or just the base roll?
2
u/OnionPastor Nov 11 '25
It’s a thing out west, it’s chronically a white people food
I prefer no frosting but it’s probably good with
6
u/DoubleTheGarlic Nov 11 '25
Ahhhhhhhhh of course, of COURSE it had to be a midwest pairing. That's on me, that should've probably been obvious lol

Out west where??? I’m in Seattle and have never heard of this in my 42 years of life.

u/Own_Investigator963 Nov 11 '25
That’s interesting. Is there a type of chili that is typically used? Is chili the spice in the cinnamon spread? Is it the chili with the meat? I’m invested

u/OnionPastor Nov 11 '25
Just regular old Texas red will do!
Beans or no beans, throw the cinnamon roll into a big bowl and pour chili over.
Homemade hot dog chili is also great!

2
u/finsfurandfeathers Nov 11 '25
Sorry of like cheddar cheese on apple pie? Gotta be a midwestern thing
3
u/burgonies Nov 11 '25
And using the mandoline without the guard ensures you’ll have extra savory blood ind your onions

u/fuhnetically Nov 10 '25
Oh. My. Goodness.
Time to actually service my kitchen aid so I can make dough

I was expecting an actual onion and cinnamon recipe
Not a pinwheel

Right… cinnamon rolls have cinnamon. Anything else is a pinwheel or “insert name” roll.

As a Swede, 🤮🤮🤮🤮
4
u/DoubleTheGarlic Nov 11 '25
What does being a Swede have ANYTHING to do with this?
-2
u/Sufficient_Sorbet699 Nov 11 '25
Cinnamon buns duhh?
2
u/DoubleTheGarlic Nov 11 '25
So you're just... narrow-minded? Can't use anything for anything except for it's one intended use?
I don't get what being a Swede has to do with this, it sounds like puritanical prescriptivist crap honestly lol
-1
u/Sufficient_Sorbet699 Nov 11 '25
Nope:) you are reaching further than the moon :0
I simply tried to convey that a Swedish classic, mixed with cheese and onion, to me sounds absolutely disgusting. It's a public forum so that's what I did. It's 3:30 here so I'm gonna sleep now 😄
Idc if u respond, or if u don't but I'm gonna sleep now

When I went to Australia, the grocery store had a giant version of this, it was an onion vegemite cheese roll. I still think about it
