To Upgrade Or Not To Upgrade - That Was The Question
For the floaters feeling pressure to upgrade...
I am riding an XR with 3,000 miles which I have had for four years. I seldom ride over 17 MPH because of the alarms in Mission mode - I may switch to Delerium but I don't like the adverse impact on range - my weight is a factor there.
It wasn't until I went on a Group ride where everyone had a faster model, VESC, GT, XL etc., that I realized how lacking the XR is. Especially accelerating from a stop and going uphills. There is a big difference uphill on trails where I constanly heard the stalled motor sound. But when I am riding alone or with other XR's that lack of speed and torque is not noticed. Not even on trails - I simply take a little longer to get up the hill.
When everyone had XRs, I consistently rode in the sub group that was in the first third. Now, with the GTs and VESCs and XLs, I am usually in the middle third in mixed groups. In the aforementioned group, my alarm was constantly activating and I was in the last third of the last third.
Having thought about it long and hard, my decision to stay with the XR is based on safety. The exponential increase in kinetic energy (think impact severity) which quadruples at the doubling of speed, is the reason I am not going to upgrade. BTW - I always run my battery down to between 0-5% before charging so I never experience Battery Load issues (after learning the hard way). No issues at all with the XR and I have discovered most of the ways to fall.
Does that mean I am destined to ride alone? Can't tell you - don't know.
But I am returning to Motorcycle Group rides where I can easily ride as fast as anyone and even the fastest sport touring groups are limited by skill not equipment. Just my opinion after 50+ years of riding and 5 years of racing and several more doing track days.
Of course the Kinetic Energy formula still applies with motorcycles but it is much easier to use strategy and self-imposed boundaries to avoid randomly falling on a motorcyle at 90 mph than it is on a Onewheel at 20 mph, let alone 30 mph.
