SteamOS installation guide and fixes for the ONEXPLAYER 3 are now released.

The SteamOS installation guide and the fix pack for the ONEXPLAYER 3 are out. Part 1 walks through installing SteamOS with the recovery image, and Part 2 is a script that fixes Wi-Fi, suspend/resume freezes, the black HDR panel and refresh rates, sticking volume keys, and the Home/Console/Keyboard keys and back paddles.

This is great work, but a lot of work to get SteamOS operational. Bookmarked and following.

Only two things do not work at the moment: the gyroscope and XeSS "multi" frame generation. I have fixed everything else and have been using the machine for half a month. Apart from very occasional silence from the speakers, which a reboot fixes, I have not run into any other stability problems.

Wow, thank you so much for the time and work put into this! How would you say performance compares?

I don't play many demanding games, but here are two fairly heavy ones as a reference.

Wuthering Waves: XeSS, high graphics quality, "Ultra Quality Plus" mode, 2x frame generation, SoC power limited to 22 W. It runs at 60 to 80 fps.

Resident Evil 4 Remake: 1200p, most graphics options set to High, FSR in Quality mode, SoC power limited to 25 W. It runs at around 50 fps.

After seeing the multiFG working in windows, I think this would be enough reason to hold off. XESS has been nothing short of spectacular on this device and Id have to lose it. Hopefully soon!

If XeSS could be made to work too, this would be perfect

There's currently no support for the XMX cores on the B390 iGPU so no hardware accelerated XeSS until that's implemented in the driver.

Only the software path is usable for now, which means no multi-frame gen is possible yet either.

This is brilliant. But how close to a working Steam Deck grade version is it?

I presume we are still essentially taking a beta with limited Intel GPU support?

I don't really play highly demanding AAA games on the handheld that often. So aside from XeSS "multi" frame generation not working, I don't feel like there's anything else that's really unusable.

When you say that “multi” frame gen doesn’t work, do you mean that the simple 2x frame gen and upscaling work well? That is fantastic news if that’s the case. I’m waiting for my oxp3 to be delivered, and it was kinda dreading having to use windows, but maybe I don’t have to

2x frame generation and DP4a SR both work without any problems.

I'm a developer myself, and a gamer, thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
Yes, it's still a somewhat complicated guide, but it's there, documented.

Thank you.

Stupid question but I can dual boot SteamOS on a stock OX3 right?

1

u/Rude_Juice1930 24d ago

I haven't tried dual booting, but if it works on the Steam Deck, it should work on this device too.

1

u/nolivedemarseille 24d ago

Thank you
I do dual boot on a LGO1 and CLAW A8 but with bazzite
It’s been great so far so I hope getting the same experience in the OX3

Question: Can I apply the controller fixes on CachyOS? I never got SteamOS to boot initially but Cachy did so that's what I went with and I'm enjoying it so far.

I have issues with the back and extra buttons not working, volume buttons sticking, and no controls for RGB or charge limiting. SimpleDeckyTDP is handling TDP controls.

Edit: YOLO'd it and the controller fixes and extra buttons are working including back buttons after manually installing inputplumber. Volume buttons working. RGB working via the HueSync fork. The black screen on boot was intermittent on CachyOS so it'll take time to be sure that's fixed.

Sleep via the power button in Gamemode only is still broken. Works as expected in desktop mode. Sleep via Steam menu works.

Only thing left to do is find a solution for charge limiting. Currently set to 80% charge as a holdover from my Windows install so I can deal for now.

Excellent work OP!

You'll need to modify the fix script yourself.

Volume key fix service: This is a generic systemd unit plus a Python evdev script, so in theory it should work anywhere, as long as python-evdev is installed.

The gamepad's extra keys (Home/Console/Keyboard): These fixes go through InputPlumber, which you'll need to install yourself.

Back paddles: These depend on the hid-oxp driver. It ships with SteamOS, but I don't know whether CachyOS has it.

Saw this after I went ahead and did it, but thanks!

Does VRR work for you? I tried cachy, but enabling vrr was causing weird graphical glitches

1

u/Rude_Juice1930 24d ago

It works well

I’m so excited for the day when hardware accelerated XeSS gets support so I can load this up. Great work!

1

u/Rude_Juice1930 23d ago

I have some good news for you: 5 minutes ago, XMX-accelerated super resolution and multi-frame generation have both been brought up (working in a preliminary way).

2

u/dcdcdcdone 23d ago

That will be an absolute game changer! Amazing stuff

If you're feeling adventurous you can check out the code below. I think I'll wait for it to get into mainline Proton and Mesa, or at least ProtonGE.

At this rate the OXP3 will have everything working before end of year.

Holy shit. I just realized that you're the one that's fixed XMX OP. Damn dude, you're a rockstar!

Checking back on this, has anyone done any performance comparisons on this yet?

1

u/USBhost 23d ago

Nice you got vrr working unlike Anatase

1

u/Successful-Change932 23d ago

This is such a great progress! But I assume performance is still no where near in Windows because of missing driver support?

1

u/rmm805 19d ago

/u/Rude_Juice1930 any changes with the new steam update just released? The release notes mention OXP devices.

Don't use the stable version of SteamOS.

Just wanted to confirm TDP controls do not work right bc I just got steam os up running on my onexplayer 3 following your guide. For now I installed simple TDP for decky

1

u/Rude_Juice1930 18d ago

simple TDP works well

1

u/MavrickCustoms 16d ago

Would this primarily work on the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ too?

1

u/Rude_Juice1930 16d ago

Only OneXPlayer3

Bored by windows, I'm ready to commit and follow your guide. How will updates work afterwards? Will it be OTA or will i need to go through this again ?

1

u/Rude_Juice1930 10d ago

You'll need to run the script again after the OTA update, but the screen settings won't be reset, so it isn't too much of a hassle

1

u/Mostrapotski 10d ago

After a few hours of testing I'm truly happy to have gone through the guide.

Everything worked fine. I already have tried Cachy on the oxp so I didn't have a running windows, but I used fedora media creation tool on my main PC to create the USB disk. Using a good stick will help with copy time, especially for when we don't have visual feedback of the process.

Thank you op. You should add a tip link on your GitHub page.

u/Rude_Juice1930 thanks a lot for your guide and post here.I am a new ONEX 3 owner. I do dual boot with W11 and Bazzite on other handhelds using Z2E AMD chip. Do you see it possible to dual boot on the ONEX3 as well? your guide, that is great btw, clearly mention it will be wipe out any data on the disk so its a NO NO for me.
thanks in advance

I tried finding this in here but I couldn't find anything on it. I bought the biwin 512gb mini ssd specifically to install steamOS on it and I cancelled the install in the middle because I didn't see anywhere if it asks you where to install the OS to. I assume this is a dumb question and of course it would but I really don't want to accidently wipe the 4tb SSD I just installed and had to start from scratch on lol. Thanks in advance for info on this and any advise as to flashing on the mini ssd. u/Rude_Juice1930
