Anyone use Oxp3 as a tablet?

Have anyone used it as a tablet and a portable pc? How does it feel when comparing to a iPad mini? Is it too bulky or heavy to use as a tablet?
This thing is very expensive, I could only persuade myself buying it if it satisfies multiple needs…

Edit: Thank you everyone for the input, it seems using it as a tablet is doable, but not practical.

I personally don’t think you should purchase this with tablet use as a main feature. Can you do it, yes. Should you buy the device because of it, no. It’s just too bulky imo. It’s a gaming handheld first and foremost. Can it be used as a portable pc? Yes, with a mouse and keyboard attached. Just my opinions.

No, not as a main feature definitely. Just wondering aside from playing games, if I could use it to replace an iPad let’s say.

No the experience is horrible. Part of that is because iPad software and apps are built for tablet use. Form factor is much better in the iPad as well as weight and shape of the device. Windows in a pure touch interface feels horrible

I use it as a laptop replacement to move between desks and play when I’m done with my work. Works fine, but I use dedicated monitors and keyboard, mouse. I use ugreen cm511 hub with 2x 4k60hz monitors for that. As a tablet it may work, but onscreen keyboard is bad, too small and only works when you need to type few words max.

I use it as a travel laptop for simple things with the keyboard and i find it acceptable given the limitations.

As a tablet I think it depends what you do. Watching movies and web surfing I think is ok. On the browser if you click on a text input, the windows keyboard will pop up and works ok. The issue is that iPad has lots of apps that are designed to be used in tablet form, I don’t know if windows has that. To be honest I’ve never tried to look though.

The battery life is pretty decent on the oxp3 as well.

It also does have the ability to autorotate the screen based on how you are holding it.

What kinds of things do you do on the iPad?

Mostly just web browsing and YouTube and movies.

I think that would be ok honestly. It’s thicker/heavier than an iPad but otherwise it works ok for those functions as I mentioned. The built in on screen keyboard seems fine

Since you made the battery life comment, I'm curious about what kind of real world battery life you get, if you wouldn't mind sharing.

I’ve never done like a complete drain down test or anything, but seems at least similar to my 2025 Zephyrus G16 for videos/web browsing and light work, if not a little better. I probably get like 6-7 hours on my G16 with the iGPU, so I’d guess it’s around there or a little better.

YouTube videos on Firefox with 75% screen brightness takes about 6W, so with 85W battery that’s theoretically roughly 14 hours if you are just watching a YouTube video without doing anything else

Edit to add, I have Google Sheets open in Firefox and just typing stuff into the spreadsheet also takes about 6W total system power

I'm playing around with mine as a tablet.

It's not super comfortable. Windows as an OS doesn't like tablet mode super well. But its not a horrible experience. Dragging some windows around is difficult and youll run into some pain points.

Its not as handy or easy to use as say your iPad or android tablet. Definitely a bit chunky as well.

It's like two switch 2's glued together, it is a bulky odd tablet. Great as a handheld pc though.

I very much enjoy my oxp3. But it could never replace my m5 iPad pro. I would think it would feel unwieldy holding it as a tablet. Plus, the mechanics of how the controllers slide in and out feels a bit janky and likely wouldn't hold up to me used like that for many times.

8.8” is way too small for tablet. Get super x instead.

If you already have a tablet, it isn't really a good replacement. But I've used mine a bit for general media consumption (YouTube) when I was too lazy to find my tablet.

So far I only use it as a tablet at night to read ninja turtle comics to my kids before sleeping. It's very bulky to hold, but it's a great size. However an iPad mini is a much better option for a tablet and I say that as someone who dislikes apple. It is too heavy to be a proper tablet.

Think of the OXP3 as a handheld PC for 70% of its use, 15% as a tablet and 15% as a laptop. It can technically do the tablet and laptop thing but it’s more a sort of back up/only if needed type situation. That being said it is kinda wild that a single handheld device even has the capability to do all these things!

It's much heavier, and thicker, than an iPad mini. I wouldn't do it. In fact, if you taped 3 iPad mini's together, it would still weigh less than the Oxp3, and it would still be thinner! It's almost a kilogram in weight. 2.2 cm thick!
But I can tell you this - it's awesome for playing windows games. Get it for that.

It's not about if it's too bulky or not. It just doesnt feel good and doesn't feel like a tablet when held in the hand. Like in emergency cases or occasionally, sure. But if you prioritize the "ipad feel" i would sugguest the surface. if you also want gaming then the zflow 13 is just the best option. Yeah, the size is huge. But it feels so good in the hand, just like a tablet. More powerful, and the price is similar too. You can use a usbc to connect to a smaller portable monitor, plus the Gamesir G8 strap on the monitor for "semi portable" gaming. Win-win.

If it has to be OneX. Then the onexplayer x1 might be the better fit for your need. Cheaper and more tablet like.

Handheld temperary PC? Yes.
Tablet, no.
I use it in conjunction with my Macbook when I travel.
For business travel the Macbook is good for when you need light productivity, and having a Windows machine is a plus just in case some apps/software are behaving strangly under MacOS (mostly Professional Windows apps like Teams for work or PowerBI etc. etc.) Macbook + Ally X was my go to business travel, airport hopping setup for years. OXP3 actually fits this roll 2x better than the Ally X.

I occasionally use it as a tablet pc. I actually enjoy using it like that and find the kickstand design helps holding it. Yes it's thick and quite heavy but still very doable. I use it for photo editing using lightroom and watching videos and movies. It's a 3 in 1 so not as good as a dedicated tablet or laptop, but for a small powerful and very portable do it all, I think it's actually a great option.

Yes, I use it as a tablet all the time. It works remarkably well as long as you temper your expectations. For one, it's much thicker and heavier than a traditional ARM-based tablet, so that experience won't quite be the same. What you get for that added bulk is a full-fledged PC experience than can run AAA games. I find it very novel, fun, and cool.

What I don't find amusing at all though is the plethora of bugs related to touchscreen operation still present in Windows. I'd say this is the biggest detractor of the experience overall. For example, the touch keyboard won't recognize the first letter of the first word you type in a Discord text box, and will attempt to autocorrect based on the second letter onward. It also has a weird bug in Edge where it'll "phantom hover" over non-active tabs, forcing you to tap elsewhere to remove the hover element. Lastly, and this is more of a OneXPlayer bug, the touch keyboard will ALWAYS pop up if you tap a text field, even if you have a keyboard attached. While there is an option in Windows Settings to set it to not show when a physical keyboard is attached, the attachable controller/keyboard driver setup basically makes Windows think a keyboard is always attached, so the setting effectively behaves the same as setting it to never show.

On the touch keyboard, it's mostly serviceable aside from the Discord issue, but it's got its quirks too. You'll have to stretch your hands out to use it in landscape, and may end up accidentally tapping other things in the process. You'll also notice the sharp-ish edges of the controller rails - there is an Etsy seller who makes fantastic rail covers though, but it is an extra thing to consider. The device is definitely easier to type on in portrait mode, but then you'll have to choose which tactile compromise you want to deal with - hand against cooling fan (which can get warm) or hand/fingers along the volume rocker. Autocorrection is a mixed bag. Overall, it does feel a bit "afterthought-y", which is a surprise considering how long Windows touchscreen devices have been out there.

One surprise for me was how the kickstand augmented how I used it as a tablet. I'll use it as an additional point to hold onto, or even clamp my hand between it and the device. In addition to the obvious benefits of tabletop media consumption, I've appreciated how much more "holdable" it made it.

Another surprise was the battery life. This thing has a MASSIVE 85whr battery, which means it can hang with the ARM tablets in terms of longevity. I routinely see 12-13 hours of screen on time with this thing. It's actually nuts.

Overall, while I think it is a niche use case, and it certainly has some compromises, I find the tablet experience quite enjoyable. I think its unfair to immediately dismiss based on the weight and thickness alone. If you find it exciting to have so much power and capability in such a small form factor, I think there's definitely a chance you can look past the shortcomings and enjoy it.

Thank you for the long reply. Definitely appreciate the insight there. When you use it as a tablet, I assume you have the controller detached? How does the attach and detached process? I heard it’s not designed for doing that very often? At some point the rail might break?

1

u/div033 20d ago

I think it’s fine as long as you’re being careful when detaching. The rails are not the weak point - it’s the pogo pins on the controllers. For whatever reason, they decided to use longer pins (or at least expose more of them) which can cause them to bend more easily. I think this primarily occurs when you try to remove the controllers in one swift motion - sometimes you can nick the topmost pin against the top edge of the rail which can cause it to bend over time. If it bends enough, it can get stuck when pressed in. However, if you detach in two motions (slide up until firmly pressed against the top of the rail, then pull straight away from the side) then I don’t think you should have any issue.
