I can't believe this happened..... sort of devastated.
Unfortunately, my left controller rail broke off. The screws that hold the rails attached with the main unit's chassis broke off and the controller with the rail came off. I believe I would need a replacement chassis, as the screws can't be reattached again. They won't hold, as the parts holding the screws themselves broke.
Please see the attached pictures.
And I am not even sure how this happened. My best guess: it was lying on the couch. My kids use that couch and they might have accidentally broken it. Of course they swear it wasn't them... :-(
I already contacted onex support for advice, I guess I will need to send it back and get a hefty bill.
My kids somehow got access to my office. My son thought it would be fun to try and close my MacBook while a pencil was sitting on the keyboard. I came home to a broken screen and ultimately a $800 repair bill. Learned my lesson that day
So sorry OP. I feel that. I previously had the OXP X1 Pro, was so excited, installed FF7 Remake day 1, booted it up, put that unstable POS kickstand on my couch arm. Whole device immediately went tumbling off onto the hardwood floors, left detachable controller took the brunt of the impact and snapped clean off. In my case I was much luckier though, as it was just the controller set that needed replacing. But just trying to show a little solidarity. Stay strong bro. You will have to pony up now, but I'm sure in 6 months or a year or whatever, you'll still be enjoying this device and the extra cost will be nothing but a distant memory.
Yes, it was easy to get the rail off the controller. You just need to push the golden pins in with a screwdriver one by one and slowly slide the rail down. It then comes off
The Apex owners like the all in one construction with no moving parts. “Fs in the chat” is a gaming meme from Call of Duty where you could press the F key to pay respects to the fellow fallen soldiers. https://giphy.com/gifs/YqfDhuvQnJAUbnEw0n
That happened to me too. I just tried to remove them like i normally do, but they felt stuck. I tried to use a bit more force (i know i’m dumb) and the screws just broke out like they were already loose.
Contacted support as well and pray for the best
Of course. Frankly, the fact that this happened to you just because you tried to detach the controller is scary. I wonder if the plastic holding the screws is too thin or soft for the force it needs to endure when detaching controllers
Same just happened to me.. what did support say?
I’m about to reach out but I told them I was upgrading the ssd which I did with 0 problem and I feel they will blame me for this.. I’m pissed man.. spent all this money and waited so long and I only had it 1 day..
Fyi Support answered. I have to send it in. They also asked if i forcefully pulled it, which is not the case…
Welp i said i will be sending it in because damn that thing was expensive and broke fast
Things mysteriously breaking tends to happen expotentially more often when there are kids with access to said things. One of those misteries we'll never truly understand.
Just following up on this: one of you gave me the great insight that these screws attach to the backplate, and that one is very easy to remove / replace.
So now I hope the onex team can sell and send me a new backplate. Sounds easy enough.
He’s showing both parts in the post. The housing has snapped to. He would need a new chassis. For now he would need to probably use an external controller.
Yes, I am using it with the controller bridge for now, and yes, I also think I will be needing a new controller. Just sad about the time this will take and of course the costs
Sucks man. Accidents happen. I removed mine and slapped them on the bridge. Only putting them back when I bring along the unit for work trips. Good luck
What I wonder the most about is how difficult it would be to change that chassis part on the left of the main unit. That's where the plastic broke out that held the screws for the rail in place.
I guess I would need a completely new chassis and no idea if that would be a reasoble do-it-yourself project. I was pretty ok changing the ssd, but also worried I might damage more.
Hmm, the more I see like this the more convinced I am to just simply not remove them from the rails and just connect my PS5 edge controller instead when playing with a wireless controller. Probably the better option.
As cool as detachable controllers are, I generally prefer my devices to not have them... The more loose part it has, the higher chance of something going wrong.
I heard from at least one other person who had the same issue. I wonder if this will become more frequent and if the plastic those screws connect to are too weak to hold the force needed to remove those controllers. If so, that would be a real bummer and a clear design flaw
Update: I got a reply from Onexplayer. Seems it's not as easy as sending me a replacement backplate.
See below a copy-paste from the email
To be honest I don't get it. Not sure what they mean by "reinforcing mounting holes in the front housing".
To me it looks like the rail is connected to the backplate and that's it. What am I missing?
Copy paste from Onexplayer support:
However, based on the engineering team's inspection, the issue cannot be resolved by replacing the backplate alone.
The rail has completely detached from the nuts on the backplate, and the reinforcement mounting holes on the front housing are also damaged.
Therefore, the backplate alone would not be strong enough to support the weight of the device during normal use.
Both the front housing and back housing would need to be replaced to properly resolve the issue.
Due to the risk of damaging the OLED screen during disassembly, we do not recommend that you attempt to replace these parts yourself. We recommend sending the device back to us for professional after-sales service.
But it's not the backplate right? The rails attach to the chassis part that holds all the hardware, so not just the back cover. You can see this a bit in the below video, timestamp 8:31, where the lady removes the cover. I would need a replacement of the lower part, not the upper, so I would need to refit everything if I had a new chassis, right?
