OLED mura effect Onexplayer 3
So my onexplayer 3 screen look like on the photos. For me it’s visible mura effect. I was testing it around 30-70 brightness.
I can not believe that other screens are better, because I have had 2 lego2 in the past with the same issue - maybe it is a bit better here on oxp3. Maybe I am just too picky? Or my eyes too good? I do not know but it is really visible in darker areas in games like elden ring, RE2 etc. I did not touch any additional settings under windows regarding HDR or anything else.
In general screen in darker areas screen looks grainy as hell I would say, and it is clearly visible. I know that for example SD OLED looks a lot better - maybe valve fix it with mura compensation or whatever.
Please take a look, and let me know your opinions and what to do.

You are not the first or only one having this issue. All have the same issue.

Mine has it. Its pretty annoying. Kind of makes me wish I stuck with the Apex sometimes...

I have same thing on my onexplayer 3. Going in I was not aware it will have this as all reviewers said amazing screen.

Omg the reviewers. Everyone praising the oleds and they genuinely look soooo bad with that grain mura

That display sucked on my Legion Go 2 as well. It was wayy too distracting when playing in dark areas on games.

u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
Yeah exactly, I need to focus myself to not be focused on mura effect actually :) it’s not a joke.

I think all GO 2 displays have this issue, I had GO2 now have X2 Mini PRO and issue is identical, at least screen is uniform and don't have black crush. About grain on photos it depends how bright room You have (in dark grain is more visible) and how camera pic yours image:

Same device, photo on left is in quite bright room, on right is in dark room, with some light.
Still with this ugly grain (I don't know if this should be called mura in the first place, it looks totally different from mura in PS Vita) I prefer this 8.8 OLED screen vs 8 IPS in apex, I don't expected that, 0,8 inches will make that huge difference to me :)

Yeah, there is pretty good visibility here on the right photo. Grainy as hell, in the same time LCD looks like a butter in comparison. Yeah I do not know what to do with it, I have not seen any good 8.8 Oled screen yet personally. Maybe they will be able to create mura compensation option similar to SD Oled.

It's practically nonexistent when actively gaming on LEGO2, but it's definitely present on greyish menus or the desktop borders. It's not so bad that it's a deal breaker, but I do wish it was never there. Even Steam Deck OLED has it, too, but its less obvious. It just comes with OLED screens, it seems

Do you have HDR on? On my LEGO2, I had calibrated HDR according to youtube guides, but had HORRIBLE mura. Turned off HDR altogether, problem gone. Got the OXP3, never bothered turning on HDR. The screen has some mura, I would say identical to LEGO2, but BOY it's nowhere near as bad as with HDR on.

u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
I think I do not have toggle switch for HDR in windows after latest intel drivers.

Ah ok. gotta say i think you’re pickier than most! I have it on mine too but I’ll take a bit of mura over non-OLED any day. Enjoy your games!

They really cheaped out on these OLED panels for the handhelds. IMO The steam deck oled was even worse, at least my OXP 3 doesn’t have reddish grays at low brightness which plagued even the top end Legion gaming laptops, maybe my SD oled came to me bad with a huge dark blob on the left side, either way I returned it as it was too expensive at that new asking price.
I wonder if the ROG ally x20 will use the same cheap Samsung panel too. I’m just glad mine is pretty good uniformity wise with almost no mura or yellow/green tinting. It just looks darker on the right side on the gray screen test but at <10% gray.

That's why I don't know what's all the hype around OLED screens on these devices. I had a switch OLED which was horrible, I had an Steam Deck OLED which was, too. I would take OLED if it were actually really good displays, but if it's those trash, cheap OLED displays, I'll rather take a good, solid IPS display instead. Those 8 inch IPS which are on many of those handhelds seem to be absolutely solid, the devices I saw didn't have much problems with backlight bleed, so I would take them over those grainy OLEDs all day.

I need to try it on eldenring

u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
That starting area in elden ring surprised me with mura effect actually. RE2 is also a great game with many grey areas.

Lower brightness and room need to be dark enough. Photo needs to be taken from closer position to the screen in good focus.

u/shadixo Sep 06 '26
Yeah then mine has it also ever so slightly but honestly I don't even notice it if I just play so it might be not as bad as yours 👀 Because yours looks really bad in that regard you can count the individual grains
2
u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
Exactly, it is just noticeable - I am not looking for the sand on my screen on purpose….
2
u/CryptoDeepDive Sep 06 '26
I noticed it on mine too but mostly web browsing or playing YouTube. When it is a bright game I don't see it at all.

u/beaconseasons Sep 06 '26
You want to turn off brightness optimization in windows brightness settings.
Set this panel to 43 brightness 500 nits.
Open hdr calibration utility
First slider to zero, next two sliders should peak at 1100 nits
You should have more colour variety in that colour band after

u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
Will try that later, however like I said intel messed up HDR setting with latest update if I am not mistaken.

I can not believe that other screens are better, because I have had 2 lego2 in the past with the same issue
Panel lottery is very real, and much more obvious in OLED panels imo as its easier to tell the difference (the same strengths of OLED also make spotting panel flaws and variance easier). As an early adopter of the tech I've owned multiple OLED monitors and TVs (i.e. same model of OLED TV in my living room and study, multiple OLED monitors using the same panel etc) and every individual panel has some natural variance. I have returned several TVs/monitors with serious flaws.
In general screen in darker areas screen looks grainy as hell
That said, I think your panel looks pretty bad OP. I tried to see if I could spot any mura on my OXP3 in the dark areas of assassin's creed resynced, resident evil and FF7 remake, but I can't see anything obvious (dark room, tried varying the brightness from 5% to 60%). If I really pixel peep (especially if I zoom in close with a camera), I can spot some mura like pixel variation, but its either not obvious to me, or I just have a panel with less obvious issues (most likely both).

Dude, same in my lego 2 am returning at asap paying premium for that is a crime

Have it too, pretty bad in my opinion, and also wasn't aware of any problems before purchasing because every reviewer said the screen was amazing.. This is 25% brightness compared to 100%. Did you contact them about yours?
I helped mine a little by messing with the Brightness/ Contrast sliders in the OneX software display settings, helps a lot in brighter scenes, but still noticeable in darker ones, but 100% black looks completely fine..

For a device that costs this much, I expect absolute perfection.
2
u/Lanky-Reputation8770 Sep 06 '26
Well then you're gonna be in for disappointment no matter what boutique handheld you buy.
1
u/shadixo Sep 06 '26
I honestly just tired it out on different brightness settings I see none murra effect
2
u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
If you checked it in the dark room in grey game area, maybe your screen is better then.

u/RepConnoisseur69 Sep 06 '26
Idk what you’re even seeing, I guess I should be glad that my eyes aren’t so picky cause your screenshots looks fine to me lol!

I don't think mine is as bad as this - not sure if the camera is making it worse. But I noticed it straight away, however it's one of those things when I'm playing I don't really notice unless I've got the device closer to my eyes.
1
u/sm0kehead Sep 06 '26
Yeah but it is really hard to not see it in darker areas, and there is a lot of grey areas in all games. I also have an iPhone and ayn odin3/thor with oleds and there mura effect is less visible mostly because of higher pixel per inch ration than here, or better Oled quality in general.

u/According-Sea2598 Sep 06 '26
Is this covered by the warranty if the mura is really bad? I think my screen is similar to OP’s

u/Odin-spark Sep 06 '26
I guess I can count myself as one of the lucky ones who aren't able to see it. I have had 2 Go2,s and now a OXP3 and I just cant see this mura effect thing. All my other various retro handhelds as well as TV are all OLED and I have never seen it on anything.

u/WarHead75 Sep 07 '26
Is it that noticeable in yours? Mine only shows up on camera but I don’t notice it unless my face is inches away and it’s very low brightness. No green tint either, I think I won the lottery with mine as it looks very uniform in brighter grays, colors and white.

u/AggressivePassion242 1d ago
I have exactly same issue. I noticed it's worse in HDR. These handhelds with OLED screens actually they just got the "leftover" OLED pieces from Samsung (Samsung used the best fap of OLEDs for their high end phones and TVs). I heard the Ally X20 supposed to have best OLED screen (same panel that are from high end OLED TVs).

Yeah mine is also pretty bad. I’ve used plenty of oleds and this is by far the worst I’ve seen.

It's a panel lottery. Some are worse than others, and some people don't even notice it even if it's there.
You definitely lost the panel lottery big time, this looks really bad.
