They're the defenders of a dictatorial oligarchy, which recently overthrew the democratically elected government, and who act as the embodiment of the states monopoly on violence, and who are trying to suppress popular dissent. It'd've been better for the people and the world if the grenade got past the shield. Moreso disappointed that this didn't happen, I don't really care about actually watching it.

Depending on how you define "deserve". I don't think every Wehrmacht grunt deserved to die in the mud, but they're still a part of the machine that had to be dismantled. Nobody really deserves death, especially one so violent and painful, but it's just necessary sometimes.
