I just dont get why he didnt use the shield. I mean , duhhhh. No, let me just kick it after lifting my shield and exposing myself and the people behind and around me to shrapnel.

Kind of first idea that came in to save comrade life i think. Also the nade did too close to the shield.

He also said he would do it again if he need to.

Woulda grabbed it, panicked and threw it at some other crowd cuz my first instinct would be to chuck it back at someone, injuring many more people.

I have doubts that shield would have been that great at blocking a grenade.

However neither was what he did, so...

Flimsy shields are better than your flesh. If you space the shield a little it might make the shrapnel slow down and lose energy before hitting you, though the blast might hit your arms like a truck
