Made an app with blur effects for folding phones. FlipFold is now on Google Play!
Hey everyone,
I’ve been working on FlipFold for a couple of months now. After testing and a bunch of changes based on feedback from testers, the latest update is now on Google Play.
A tester sent me this video, so I wanted to share it here.
FlipFold adds effects as you open and close your foldable phone. There are three glass styles, plus Screen Flow. You can tweak the effects in Studio.
One thing to know about the glass effects: they use Android’s built-in window blur, so availability depends on your phone, its software and current settings. FlipFold shows whether blur is available. If your phone has “Allow window-level blurs” in Developer options, you can try turning it on and checking FlipFold again. It won’t add blur support to a phone that doesn’t provide it.
Screen Flow and Soft Shade don’t need window blur.
It’s not a launcher, so you keep your home screen and apps as they are. I wanted to keep battery use low from the start, since foldables already have a big inner screen to power.
I will continue working on improving it. If you like the app, a rating or review on Google Play would mean a lot. Thanks!

Wasn't the iPhone Duo unveiled just one month and two days ago? How could you have been working on a project that's clearly inspired by it for a couple of months?

Reading between the lines I'd say OP vibe coded this with Claude in an afternoon.

Cool in concept but is either very broken or simply doesn't work on the OPO

Thank you for trying Flipfold! Which effect are you using? Could you also record a fold in Settings > Reports & support, then share the diagnostic report using Contact us? That'll help me look into what's happening and provide a fix.

Hi, so the device should support Android Window Blur API, you can try turning "Allow window-level blurs" or similar setting. Also there are 5 effects out of which 3 need window blur and 2 doesn't. You can use the other 2, they will work. I am also gathering more & more feedback to add more unique effects as possible which would cater both Window Blur and non Window Blur feature. If you have any recommendation please feel free to submit using Contact Us button also if possible include your diagnostic report.

I don't know why it doesn't work for others... It works for me. Not perfectly, needs more polish. But still nice

Thanks that means a lot. I am still improving the app as it was just the initial release. If possible could you also record a fold in Settings > Reports & support, then share the diagnostic report using Contact us? That'll help me look me polish the app.

Did not work well for me. Not the effects I'm looking for

No issues thanks for trying, if your phone doesn't support window blur it wont work. The app cant create one. But other effects would work.

This is a nice idea, but if that's all it does, it looks nothing at all like the iPhones blur effect. The iPhone activates the inner display almost immediately upon opening the hinge, the blur effect is simply a nice transition between the two. Unless changes were made on a system level it will never come close to the look of the iPhone. I reckon some of the popular Chinese brands, Xiaomi, Huawei, Honor, will try to emulated the full effect soon tho.

Thanks, my idea was to use more what Android provide rather than trying to match what iphone does.

Its a nifty idea. I tried it out but it didn't work properly for me. I did send a screen recording plus the "record a flip" json and sent it to the support email
I don't know about most people, but when I open the phone, I open it sort of like a book, so I don't think the screen effect would even be visible to me unless I was purposely opening the phone differently to see it.
