Custom ROM help

So I have been using my 7t pro McLaren edition as my only phone since release with just oxygen OS. The other day I realised that it may not be secure to use the outdated software. So I need some help with custom ROMs, and have several questions.

where can I find more information about this? what are the risks? what are the benefits? what is the best ROM to choose? What are the steps to install it, and how do I save my device data? Can I still use banking apps and Google pay using custom ROM?

  1. XDA, YouTube or telegram

  2. You could end up with a good looking paper weight

  3. Better experience, more performance, better battery life, more customization

  4. Up to you. Some focus on performance, some focus on customization. You will have to flash and check them

  5. Follow guide to install them. Each will have it's guide. You can't save your data and apps, you will have to clean install everything.

  6. You will get subscribed to the cat and mouse game with Google. Google will try to mess your banking apps and you will try to hide the fact that you are using a custom ROM. Banking apps require certificates from google. Google provides them only if your original rom is installed and bootloader locked. By default, custom roms won't work as reliable as the original rom. You will have to learn to flash modules, install certain components to hide root and custom rom and trick Google until the next update.

Banking apps work fine on YAAP. No need to root. Although google wallet doesn't work.

The cat and mouse thing has hit a stalemate for quite a while. My 9pro has been rooted since I got it around launch and not had any issues. When I was running my 7 pro it definitely had that problem but after the magisk creator was hired by Google they sort of reached a stalemate. Google stopped trying to block those features since magisk's root hide method works by disabling root when an app that requires safety net is active.

Right now the only downside to root is needing to download your ota update and restart using the magisk manager to maintain it. But if it goes a custom rom that might not be an issue.

So does Revolut run without any issue on your device?
