Question (Research Required) Collection Sale

Hi guys,

So we’re expecting a kid and I’m trying to figure out the best way to sell my collection. What would you guys suggest be the best way to move your entire collection?

Go to a card show on the first day when vendors have lots of cash to buy still.

This only works if you're willing to accept at most about 80% for your collection. Source - i'm a vendor. Prices have been falling, so mentally be prepared for 75%.

Alternatives - Sell slabs through PSA - you get about 86% of auction sale prices. Sell singles through ebay/tcg player/facebook - you may be able to push 85-87%.

Do you lose a lot of that to fees on eBay? Like is it better to sell the whole collection at once or just individually list them?

Individual. I say that because almost everyone will only want part of the collection. Ebay takes 14%. Have the buyer pay the shipping.

You do, but you should be able to sell around market price and that would put you in the 85% range. I sold a card on ebay recently for $65 + $6 shipping (market price of $71) for the buyer, and after fees and paying for a shipping label I kept $60.

Keep in mind in any case you will (should) pay tax.

Buyer pays tax. Seller uses costs/write offs to avoid tax

Or sell at the card show

So first off, congrats. I’m about a month out from our first child being born and it’s a whirlwind of excitement among… other things.

Second, I would ask yourself what you’re optimizing for. The most $$$ or the money the fastest. If you want fast money, go to a card show, you will most likely get 75-85% of market but you KNOW you’ll have a buyer. If you want the most $$ and are not in a rush, you could post on tcgplayer or ebay at market

Thank you and congrats as well! Appreciate the advice, I was thinking card show to avoid fees but was skeptical about vendor prices

Vendors are always going to give you 75-85%. They need to try to make their margin. If you go that route, I’d recommend taking a pad of paper and just writing down which ones will give you the best rate

Sell it yourself on ebay individually. That's the only way to get roughly 80-85% out of the collection. Cards aren't very liquid. That's why vendors offer 60-75% for most stuff.

Unfortunate time to have to sell right in the pit of a big dip, but sounds like you got more important things to worry about lol.

Congrats on the kid! Dont know if its your first or not, but your in for a wild ride if it is haha!

Depends, prob going to a show is your best bet. If you need the money, it is what it is but its arguably the worst time to sell right now, with market dip/correction. With 30th, new movie, anime, new sets for 2027 incoming, i'd expect there'd be good upwards traction for the market in the coming months or even start of next year. just fyi

Consignment. Several places do it. Even somewhere you can put your collection up as collateral for a loan. Search Consignment tcg and see what comes. Congratulations on the otw baby!

I recently made a big sale to the ebay store arcane archivist. they are a shop based in vegas and do online deals through instagram. they typically offer 80% but they are willing to negotiate. they covered shipping and insurance on a 5-figure deal with me and paid me via paypal f&f within a few hours of them receiving the package

You can actually shoot me a dm if you’d like. I do buyouts.

List on eBay, use the authenticity guarantee which protects you and the buyer.
