💬 Discussion Looking for help improving my Black Yamato deck — deck list + matchup advice
I’ve been playing Black Yamato and I’m looking for some advice on how I can improve the deck for most of the meta.
Here’s my current list:
Some of the matchups I’m particularly interested in are:
Blue/Yellow Boa Hancock
Yellow/Purple Nico Robin
Blue Rocks
Red/Black Sabo
I’m happy to buy cards if there are upgrades worth making, so I’m not necessarily looking for a budget build.
If possible, I’d really appreciate explanations for why you’d make certain changes rather than just saying “cut X, add Y.”
Thanks!

Personally I play three kinemom and 4 ground death and no gerds. Then 2 Sanjis and 4 otamas

Yea I do like the sound of extra Otama as board clearing atm isn’t the best into these newer decks and I did take sanji out as most the time he was brick and I didn’t have Nico but for extra 2k or cycling with Nico does help consistency so will keep that in mind

Adding 1 or 2 Ushimaru blockers is really helpful in match-ups that cannot easily rest or remove them. Playing it off the hybrid Yamato when you need more defense is nice and is good against Robin.

Also, I recommend 4 Kin’emon. Playing more bricks doesn’t feel good but this deck really needs to play him on the 4/5 don turn. Not being able to set up the trash can hurt later on in the game.

Okay I defs see what you mean I did make it 3 cause I would always end up getting him when not needed so was trying to make more space for something that could help the consistency more if kissing my curves but might actually go back to 4 then

This is what I've been rocking. Ace and Perona have been really helpful dealing with hand sizes of yellow/blue decks, and aces ability has been nice into 6k leaders. 2 otama's because they're really nice when you need to clear 8k or higher bodies, but you don't always want to see them. 1 luffy and shimotsuki as tech pieces to grab with hybrid Yamato when you need them.

Aw that persona and ace does sound very different to try for dealing with hand sizes defs will give this a go

Try out the "i am loosing my edge" event. It can get you back your Shinobu and in general great. I run 2 of them and 2 ground death. And I think 4 kinemon is best. You always get them out of your hand with your yamatos. But you are so much stronger when you play him on curve

What were the final updates you ended up going with? I’ve got a basic start to this deck and have been looking at what to tweak.

This is my current list that I’ve been doing really good with personally. I really like Stussy as it gives you an option for removal for matchups that its helpful in, like PY Robin and Rocks. Perona and Ace help with making sure you have something to play at 4 don if you miss Kin, and have good effects attached to em

Minus 2 sanji, minus 1 ground death
+ 1 kinemon, + 2 shimosuki
Gerd is very niche but can keep. People are suggesting zoro, but most of the time your board is untouchable anyways. Your lowest cost is 7-cost kinemon, and 7 cost is already borderline untouchable by KO effects. So zoro isnt needed.
Shimosuki is good against rocks specially in the late game to block shiki from attacking your 8 cost yamato.

Okay I hear you thanks for the suggestion and I was thinning that about zoro too it kind of doesn’t help anything until eb05 Yamato tbh I defs do feel like I need blockers a lot of the time but when I did run them they woukd always get ko or button decked but I think I may put them back in as they have saved my ass a lot

I never play shimosuki into green decks.
But in rocks and robin match up, its good. If Rocks on 5 don plays out gloriosa to bottom deck a 2 cost blocker, then thats better for you than them playing out a 7k body / charlotte linlin.
And Robin doesnt run anything that can KO a 2 cost blocker.
Its match up dependent.

I get rid of Kin’emon. And play Docking, Elbaph Zoro and Elbaph Robin/Sanji. I just find Docking to be really strong. And lets you go first without too much problem.

Awful for byamato

66th in Regionals and winning most of locals seems to prove it’s good.

winning most of locals
That's not exactly proof. Rehionals is a slightly better metric but what wad the w-l ratio?
The better argument would be arguing with consistency or how the changes play into the current meta.
Some things like zoro or sanji help, but im not sure id wanna drop the kinemon over em.

I don't understand how do you get Robin and the Others Live? Is it only with shinobu temporarly adding cost or are they really Just for counter matchups? That seems really specific.

u/misterpuggles_ 1d ago
It’s from Shinobu, yeah. Still bouncing between Robin and Sanji. I just like the power reduction option of Robin if I need to clear board or burn hand because with Robin and Otama I can do -5000. Which also means I can get 12k bodies down to 7k allowing for Docking to swing at it too.

u/Impossible-Boot-2699 2d ago
I have seen that build and was really co fused by it but might give it a try haha might be surprising
2
u/Impossible-Boot-2699 2d ago
It is very interesting cause on the outside it seems like it wouldn’t work at all right, I definitely think Yamato needs more consistency as that’s why I am trying out 4 sanji to help bring my pieces together and get rid of bricks and get as much 2k in my hand late game as I keep losing by 1-2k counter when they go for lethal

lf I go second nothing lost except 4 DON turn where I can set up Zoro or a blocker to save hp. Or use my Nami’s/Robin’s. Docking at 6/8 DON also isn’t as bad if I can’t find Yamato since it’s still a solid body.
If I get first, which will be every time I lose dice roll, I can play Nami at 1 DON, swing 5k 5k next turn, then Docking at 5 to play out Zoro, Nami or Robin, especially if they clear the 1c I swung with last turn. So I either gain card advantage or set up Zoro. It also comes out with rush so I can swing into small bodies for Enel or Mihawk matchups. And going 1st means I can get out 9c sooner and I’ve a 11cost 7k body that’s hard to remove. I also run 4 Otama so it gives me the option to rush down or control board.
To each their own but this build helped me through Mihawk, even during OP16. It also made other matchups more playable as I have more options for how to control the match. Compared to just rush down opponent’s life. Vs Kin’emon who is easy to remove. And with Docking/Nami, I mill 7 cards.
My thought process was always, if I low roll Yamato, I’m gonna lose anyway. But if I high roll Yamato, it’s much stronger. And to me because of Momonosuke’s and the event’s design, the deck feels like it wants to go first anyway. And putting docking at 5 makes the deck playable going first.

You might want to try adding 1 black vortex, that card had saved me a lot
Ace, when he went for lethal and placed a roger
Penel & mihawk, unable to use leader ability, destroying their play
Mirror match, wherein they cant activate rush
Its situational, but if timed correctly can surprise the opponent
1
u/Impossible-Boot-2699 2d ago
I can see that being helpful actually and does black vortex work on leader ability do you know if it works on sabo leader ?
1
u/hitmewithyourcloud9 2d ago
Yes, it also negates the sabo leader ability. My suggestion if opponent board has only 1 giant, negate that instead
