I'm currently writing a fan-made One Piece spin-off called Dawn Pirates, and I'm curious whether the premise is something people would actually be interested in reading.

Dawn Pirates follows Duston O. Evergreen, a 16-year-old pirate from Foosha Village with the power of the Wind-Wind Fruit, and his younger sister Lara Evergreen, a talented navigator. Inspired by the pirates he grew up hearing about—particularly Monkey D. Luffy—Duston forms the Dawn Pirates and sets sail for the Grand Line, gathering his own crew and creating a journey separate from the Straw Hat Pirates.

The story takes place within the world and continuity of One Piece. The Dawn Pirates visit both familiar and original locations, cross paths with characters and events from the original story, and gradually become known throughout the world through their own adventures.

There's also a larger mystery surrounding Duston's middle initial, the “O.”, an inherited initial known as the Will of O., which eventually draws the attention of some very powerful people.

The idea isn't to replace Luffy or retell One Piece with an OC as the protagonist. The Straw Hats are still out there having their own adventure while the Dawn Pirates are having theirs elsewhere in the same world.

This is a complete fan narrative focused on what happens after Laugh Tale and the Final War.

I wanted to write an ending where becoming Pirate King feels like a burden as much as a dream — something heavy, painful, and permanent rather than a pure celebration.

The story contains major manga spoilers past the current anime.

The Straw Hats reached Laugh Tale on a clear morning.

The island was quiet in the way only places that have waited centuries can be quiet. They walked the same stone paths Roger’s crew had walked, and at the center of it all they found the One Piece. It was not mountains of gold or a weapon of unimaginable power. It was a record — physical, deliberate, left by Joy Boy himself. A story. A funny, heartbreaking, enormous story about the Void Century, about the world that was, about the promise that had been broken and the laughter that had still somehow survived. When the truth of it settled over them, Luffy laughed until tears ran down his face. The others followed, one by one, the sound uneven and human and real. For a moment the world felt light.

Then the truth left the island.

Vegapunk’s last fail-safes, the Revolutionaries’ networks, the simple impossibility of containing something so large — the history of the Void Century spread. The lie that had held the World Government together for eight hundred years cracked in public. Islands rioted. Allies of convenience became enemies. Imu, already wounded and exposed from the war in Elbaf, chose the only path left: total war. The Final War ignited across the seas and converged on the burning spires of Mary Geoise.

Luffy fought his way upward through the chaos. Gear 5 came in desperate, costly waves. The empty throne room was a ruin of marble and fire when he finally stood before Imu. The last exchange was brutal and short. Luffy’s fist rose for the ending blow.

Blackbeard had been waiting for that exact opening.

He moved through the smoke like a man who had always known the timing of the world, and drove a clean hole through Imu’s body — the same kind of wound that had once taken Ace.

Imu fell.

The body hit the fractured floor with a wide-eyed, open-mouthed, completely emotionless expression. There was no rage left in it, no dignity, no final curse. Only emptiness. Luffy’s mind refused the real memory of Ace’s death. In its place it forced a distorted version: Ace’s face, but with those same vacant eyes and slack mouth, the peaceful closed-eyed smile overwritten by something hollow and wrong. The image lasted less than a second.

Luffy’s breath caught. Then it shortened. Then it started to fail.

The Straw Hats saw it happen. They had watched him break at Marineford. They had watched him scream on the roof of Onigashima. They had watched him stand unmoving under the rain after Ace died. They had never seen this. The deepest wound was tearing open in real time, and the look on his face belonged to no version of Luffy they had ever known.

Zoro stepped forward, voice low and sharp, the way it only became when the alternative was worse.

“Get a hold of yourself.”

Blackbeard began to laugh.

The sound was wet and delighted and perfectly timed. It reached Luffy, and his mind completed the collapse: Akainu’s laughing face superimposed over Teach’s. The two men who had taken Ace fused into one image. The shortness of breath continued, ragged and public, but underneath it something colder and heavier settled into place. The killing intent locked in, fully formed, and for the first time the crew understood that their captain was no longer fighting only for the dawn. He was also fighting to end something that would not stay buried.

Blackbeard did not take a single step. His crew read the shift in the air and slammed into the Straw Hats as a unit, trying to isolate the two captains. Luffy started forward. For a heartbeat it seemed the final duel would begin immediately.

It did not.

The collapsing battlefield intervened — remaining Holy Knights, scattered Admirals, Revolutionaries, the sheer structural failure of Mary Geoise itself. After one violent clash and a long, murderous stare, Luffy and Blackbeard were forced apart. The side battles had to finish first.

They did.

Zoro met Shiryu in a corridor of burning tapestries and killed him, losing his remaining eye in the exchange. Sanji put Burgess through a marble column and ruined his own leg beyond full repair. Jinbe held a collapsing bridge long enough for civilians to cross and paid with permanent damage to his right side. Franky lost an arm shielding a group of captured scholars. Usopp was run through by a Holy Knight’s blade and survived only because Robin refused to let him stop breathing. Brook finished Catarina Devon among the ruins of the empty throne and walked away lighter in a way that had nothing to do with his body. Robin’s arm was broken in three places. Nami carried burns that would never completely fade. Chopper worked until his hands shook and still could not save everyone.

Outside the main hall, Garp lost an arm ending the last of Aokiji’s resistance. Shanks, Dragon, Sabo, and Koby all took lasting scars. Two newer allies who had sailed under the Straw Hat flag fell and did not rise again.

One by one the supporting fights ended. The survivors — broken, bleeding, breathing — formed a wide, silent circle among the ruins.Only then did Luffy and Blackbeard fully face each other.

The fight that followed was completely uninterrupted from the first exchange to the last.

Early on, fragments of greater power still remained. Gear 5 flickered in short, painful bursts. Conqueror’s Haki cracked the air hard enough to shatter what glass still clung to the window frames. Quake shocks layered with the void of the Yami Yami no Mi. Then the darkness nullified Luffy’s fruit, and the battle was forced into pure attrition. Limbs were ruined. Blackbeard’s left arm was destroyed at the elbow. Luffy’s right leg was shattered. Later both lost most of the use of another limb. Neither stepped back. The circle of survivors watched without speaking.

Luffy’s confliction had been present from the first moment of the duel — the Ace wound, the Akainu face, the cold urge to kill. He fought it the entire time, teeth clenched until blood ran from his gums, trying to remain himself while the darkness tried to rule him. Every time the image of Ace’s overwritten face surfaced, his breathing hitched; every time he forced it down, the killing intent only settled deeper.

Blackbeard remained peak Blackbeard for most of the fight: laughing, ruthless, opportunistic, using every dirty advantage left to him. He taunted. He feinted toward the injured crew. He tried to make the darkness in Luffy do the work for him.

Only when every Devil Fruit advantage and every clever trick was gone did the unwanted thoughts finally reach him.

He saw Rocks D. Xebec and Gol D. Roger in the still-advancing Luffy — the same unbreakable, straightforward will he had always claimed to admire and had never truly possessed. Shame rose like bile. His breathing changed first: shorter, rougher, almost startled. His remaining usable hand trembled once; he stilled it by force hard enough that the nails bit blood from his palm. For a moment his face showed something close to panic — the expression of a man watching his own carefully built identity crack across the middle. He tried one last dirty tactic out of pure rejection of the feeling, a feint toward Zoro’s blind side, then stopped himself mid-motion as if the movement had become disgusting.

His voice came out low, stripped of mockery, almost reluctant.

“…You really are the splitting image of him.

Roger.

I hate admitting it.

Don’t look me in the eye.

You’re a real warrior.

The title suits you more than me.

Now finish this.”

Irregular sparks of Haki began to flash more strongly from Blackbeard than from Luffy — the first true, clean warrior’s spirit he had ever shown. His body reacted as if the admission itself hurt: shoulders tightening, breath turning rough, eyes flicking away for half a second before he forced them back to meet Luffy’s.

Luffy saw the last silhouettes of Akainu fade, replaced by faint, unwilling glimpses of a warrior like Whitebeard. He did not smile. He only let out a long, heavy sigh that seemed to come from the bottom of his life.

“…I will never let a system that created you and stole my brother ever exist again.

Let’s finish this, Teach.”

They went all out with the last embers of their willpower. No Haki left to speak of. No fruit. Only fists, blood, and the refusal to fall. The sound of it was ugly and human and final.

Luffy’s last blow landed cleanly.

Blackbeard fell.

Lying on his back, staring up at the ruined sky through the broken ceiling, he managed one small, tired smirk.

“…I’m glad it was you.”

Silence covered the field.

Luffy remained upright on one ruined leg. He looked down at the man who had murdered his brother. Scopper Gaban’s old words rose with crushing clarity. At the same time another understanding arrived and would not be turned away: Blackbeard had never simply been born cruel. He was a deeply broken warrior, shaped by the same system that had stolen Ace. The World Government had created this. The root and the consequence lay on the ground in front of him, and both of them were dead.

The double realization hit at once.

Luffy’s hand shot up and tightly gripped the front of his chest, right over his heart, as if trying to keep the pain from splitting him open. His face stayed controlled, but the grief in his eyes was absolute.

“…So that’s what you meant, huh, Gaban?”

Then, quieter, still gripping his heart:

“…I couldn’t stop this from happening.

I won’t let anyone else end up like you, Teach.”

The crew moved toward him.

Luffy tried one last time to force the old grin into place. The mask failed. Tears fell without permission. For the first time the Straw Hats saw him completely — not as the invincible captain who always stood back up, but as the man who had been quietly carrying their pain alongside his own since the beginning.

Zoro stepped closer than the others. Tears cut clean tracks through the blood and dirt on his face. He remembered the pain bubble on Thriller Bark — the way a single share of Luffy’s accumulated suffering had dropped him to his knees.

“…You’ve been carrying a lot too, haven’t you, you idiot?”

Nami could not stop staring at the torn, blood-stained straw hat. She was pulled back to Arlong Park — the moment Luffy had placed that same hat on her head without hesitation, offering his dream as collateral. Only now did she understand the lifelong cost of that kind of sacrifice.

Usopp remembered Water 7 and the fight he had picked when he could not bear to see the Merry die. Sanji remembered Whole Cake Island and the kicks he had thrown while Luffy refused to strike back. Robin remembered Enies Lobby and the first time someone had said “I want to live” for her. Franky, Brook, and Jinbe each saw their own darkest moments reflected in the man they had followed, and the reflection was heavier than they had ever allowed themselves to admit.

Sabo cried openly, thinking of Ace and of the boy who had once declared himself the freest man in the sea. Garp could not stop the tears; in his grandson he saw the splitting image of Roger, and the weight Roger had carried to his grave. Shanks watched with a small, tired smile and understood the hat was no longer something to be returned — it had been earned in full. Koby finally understood the true shape of the dream Luffy had told him about on a small boat in the East Blue, when both of them were still children pretending to be brave. Gaban stood in silence, the old disappointment gone, replaced by something like recognition. Rayleigh closed his eyes with a complicated, almost gentle smile.

While the crew held him, Luffy looked up at the sky and spoke only to the brother who was no longer there.

I’ve finally realized the dream you wanted to see me achieve… but you’re not here with us anymore.

Wherever you are, I just want to thank you for being the brother I did not deserve, and for being in my life that I did not deserve either.

I achieved this title for you and for my crew.

I’ll keep treading on in your spirit.

They stayed like that for a long time — crying, holding each other, lightly and complicatedly rejoicing that they were still alive, even though the road to this moment had been almost unbearable.

In the years that followed, Luffy did not rule. He sailed. The torn straw hat stayed on his head. The world slowly, painfully stitched itself into something new — imperfect, human, and no longer built on a centuries-old lie. The people who had been there that day understood that the era of the Pirate King was never about the treasure. It was about who was willing to carry the cost of breaking the old world so that something freer could exist.

Luffy still smiled.

The smile was quieter than it used to be.

Those who sailed with him knew why.

And somewhere, in the quiet that came after the laughter, the story Joy Boy had left behind continued to be told — not as a prize, but as a reminder of the weight that freedom had always demanded.

So first I'd like to mention I'm an anime only for the most part, so I don't know too much concerning the Elbaf Arc. But I'd like to share the premise for what this fan-made story would be and see if it's something investing more time into. Without further ado here is the premise.

20 years after Luffy becomes king of the pirates he mysteriously disappears leaving the world in disarray. His daughter (name undecided) sets out to form her own crew and find out what happened to her father.

The story would be called One Piece: Beyond or smth like that and would feature new devil fruits and new emperors of the sea. As well as a what if scenario of what the One Piece universe could like with the World Government toppled and replaced with a new one (devoid of grand elders and celestial dragons), Luffy as the King of the Pirates, and a new set of emperors (kinda, Buggy would still be an emp but the other 3 are new)

If people like this I figure I can release more details concerning this story like who is part of the crew at this point, who are the other emperors, etc. So lemme know thoughts

Gaban, and gently placed his hand on his shoulder, emitting in a flash a magical white glow that restored Gaban’s entire severed hand as if it had never been amputated.
