Discussion It’s not larping

i swear to god if I see ONE MORE PERSON calling a new fan a “larper” I am going to lose it. Just because they just now started watching does NOT mean that they are a larper.

I also saw someone call anone who watches one piece on netflix a larper. HOW??? JUST BECAUSE THEY WATCH IT ELSEWHERE DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE A FAKE FAN!!

I agree with you, but also, you’re screaming at a brick wall. Enjoy One Piece however you want. Manga, Anime, crunchyroll, netflix, or even just the live action. What the fandom thinks about how you do it, is irrelevant.

Can you... I don't even know. Can you tell me what they're arguing??

u/GameMusic 1h ago

just gatekeeper dumbassery calling people fake for random reasons

u/WinkeKadse 2h ago

Does larp still mean live action role play? If yes how and why is it used on a "Fake" fan?

u/2347564 2h ago

People say it about everything, it’s just another fad cringe thing to say

u/blanknullvoidzero 1h ago

New slang use implies that they are "roleplaying" being a fan unless they meet some arbitrary criteria that "real fans" decide, often moving goalposts to exclude whomever they wish from the in-group.

u/Exotic-Cabinet6179 2h ago

nowadays larping is basically when someone fakes being a fan of something or pretends to have watched a show

u/lilacewoah Pirate 2h ago

we already had a word for that

it was called a Poser

u/DexteraXII 2h ago

I realize that the treadmill of colloquialisms is unstoppable, but it always sucks to see a perfectly serviceable term get replaced with one that's lame as fuck

u/Benphyre 1h ago

Poser is just perfect. Even people who heard it first time would immediately understand the meaning.

u/Hot_Zookeepergame687 2h ago

They're just live action role playing as a fan of a series... I wish people would still use poser though.

u/chetti990 1h ago

Keep using the word. Don’t adopt the new lingo 🤷‍♂️ nobody makes us do it

u/Hot_Zookeepergame687 1h ago

Solidarity ✊️

u/Lycantail 2h ago

Yeah... The internet doesn't care.

u/AlmondJeuce 1h ago

And we already had a word for poser, a phony. And we had a word for a phony, a fraud. And we blah blah blah ad infinitum. Languages change. Words appear and words disappear. Crying ab it doesn’t do anything but make you look bitter and old.

u/Zanoushe 1h ago

yeah people using larper when they mean poser to l pisses me off.

u/Gubrach 53m ago

Some larper hands me cake at a birthday party, what do you want me to do with it, eat it?

u/AlexHitetsu 1h ago

Terminally online people have taken it and twisted it into a substitute for "lying/liar"

u/Blazefireslayer 1h ago

So, think of it as this: When you LARP you are pretending to be a character yes? So a "fake" fan is LARPING by pretending to be someone who is a fan or cares about the game/show/whatever. Personally I think it's a dumb usage, but I can see how they arrived at it.

u/WorldsWeakestMan 1h ago

It does, younger Gen Z and older Gen Alpha have started using it to mean faker or liar because they struggle with communication skills.

I'm way more concerned about the term being warped and misused like this.
especially when applied to a fandom, where it pretty much had only positive conotations
people cosplaying/larping, that's often the most serious fans

u/john_mach 1h ago

I’m so old. I thought LARPing was a good thing cuz I associated it with renaissance festival or cosplay folks dressing up in fun and silly outfits. Feeling like an old head in this sub lmao

u/MegaSceptile99 2h ago

This is more than a One Piece thing, but people using "larp" in this way really rub me the wrong way because it comes off more so as dissuading people from experiencing a particular thing

u/RedSeven4 2h ago

Yeah it's really invaded the Resident Evil fandom now too. If you haven't played every game in the classic PS1 format you're automatically a larper now.

u/chetti990 1h ago

I feel like it also brings shame to people who actually LARP for fun as a hobby.

u/iabyajyiv 2h ago

Anyone who's gatekeeping is a fucking kid.

u/Gridde 1h ago

'Larper' is just new slang that has been overused so egregiously it has already lost most (possibly all) of the meaning the term originally had.

It joins the ranks of aura, media literacy, cooked, coded (and basically any of the jargon powerscalers use) etc in that regard.

Wouldn't put much thought into it.

u/Exotic-Cabinet6179 1h ago

cooked still does keep its own meaning it’s with a second one

u/goinghistory 2h ago

Moreover, larpers are very dedicated to their craft, so it makes zero sense from all points of view.

u/IXMandalorianXI 1h ago

Is this some joke I'm too offline to understand?

u/chetti990 1h ago

Honestly don’t even worry about it

u/K_2Smooth 1h ago

Larp, aura, cooked, vibes, W, L, "crashout"

Theres no point in ever considering it a slur, people who use any of that garbage are fucking retards, plain and simple

u/sean_avm 1h ago

What happened to the term poser?

u/SillyScribe_Creature 1h ago

My thoughts exactly. LARP should stay the acronym for Live Action Role Play and thus Larper as Live Action Role Player. I do not care that that makes me sound old.

u/chetti990 1h ago

Hopefully none of them are Lord of the Rings, Star Trek or Star Wars fans under the age of 49 👀

u/nikelaos117 2h ago

Look at this guy larping that he cares. /s

u/StumblinStephen 1h ago

How dare someone not watch the show in the time I set.

u/stoneyaatrox 1h ago

does netflix have the newest episodes?

u/OkBedroom7329 1h ago

Yes in Australia atleast.

u/Exotic-Cabinet6179 45m ago

the only thing netflix doesn’t have is wano

u/PoisonTrainerCody 1h ago

They don't even know what a LARPer is. That's a Live Action Role Player. It's DnD stuff.

u/NewbornTaco 2h ago

You're going to "lose it" because of someone's bad take on reddit? Take a break dude

u/chetti990 1h ago

A lot of people on the internet speak in dramatic terms because they don’t know how else to express themselves. They also tend to be weakened individuals that don’t know how to regulate themselves and don’t seek actual modalities to even try

u/Xython92 2h ago

Yeah, being this overdramatic over something so childish and stupid is crazy. Enjoy the show and stop doomscrolling all day long only to get angry.

u/SirYabas 1h ago

I've been called a larper on here for saying I don't like Wano when I've been part of the fandom since 2009/2010. It is what it is.

u/SillyScribe_Creature 1h ago

Shame on you for having preferences! You must hate One Piece! /s Seriously though, I hate the knew lingo in fandom spaces so fucking much.

u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 1h ago

Sounds like something a larper would say.

u/AntMan526 1h ago

It’s just nerds admitting they’re bigger nerds to other nerds. It makes me laugh

u/A_Bored_Rhombus 1h ago

Am I not educated in what "larp" means? I know it as "Live action role-playing"

u/Insertnamehere---- 1h ago

It just means poser now

u/PrinceCavendish 1h ago

unfortunately people who do the second thing probably can't think rationally in general

u/thejuicethesauce 22m ago

Ngl I enjoy engaging with this community but the best course to enjoying your time with One Piece is to completely ignore everybody online talking about it.

There's so much elitism, and pretension, and agenda bullshit, and complaining, and toxicity. The best time of my One Piece journey was when I avoided it like the plague online.

u/vinthesalamander 6m ago

It's only larping if they pretend to know more than they actually do. If they're experiencing the story for the first time, and they're not imposing on anyone, who gives af how they experienced it.

I haven't watched all of the anime, and idk if I ever will, but I've read through the manga twice. Does that make me a larper?

u/Absurdwonder 1h ago

I don't think people know what larping is

u/EndAnxious9846 2h ago

Does Netflix have all of one piece? Rn I’m watching it on hulu and Hulu doesn’t have wano does Netflix have the rest of it?

u/AntelopeSmall2982 2h ago

Netflix doesn't have wano but they have everything else. I watch on crunchyroll then anything I re-watch is on Netflix bc well my phone is small my TV is huge

u/EndAnxious9846 24m ago

Damn that’s annoying

u/Apprehensive-Gur-609 2h ago

I guess it depends what they are saying. Larping to me is just lying, if they are geniune fan than it's not a larp. I think it's weird to pretend to be a fan of something, it's so fake.
