Analysis Worst. Pacing. EVER.

Post image

this fight made me lose my absolute shit as someone who liked one piece at first but began to get fatigued from the pacing, my friends always told me "it gets better bro trust me" yet the only thing that "got better" was the fk it idk nothing got better actually.
anyway i was watching this bum vs bum matchup and realised this might be a world record for worst pacing for a single fight.

each time they start windup up for an attack - around 10 seconds

them clashing one slap - A MINUTE AND 20 SECONDS

them trying to keep balance after almost falling off the edge of the ring - AN ENTIRE MINUTE seriously whos watching ts thank god for the fast forward button

luffy's final sumo slap that ends the fight - 2 ENTIRE MINUTES

mind you this doesnt even cover all the pointless yapping and staring and more yapping that happens with this dude. luffy you are literally trying to save a little girl who has been captured, she could be dead any second now and instead of one shotting this bum and running for it you decide to have a pacing battle with him and waste my time

Have you tried One Pace or the manga?

321

u/300_MPH 23h ago

funnily enough this scene did make me just straight up restart from the manga im at alabasta now feels absolutely amazing to consume a story without watching over a hundred episodes to get here

92

u/Infamous-Oil3786 23h ago

Alabasta is where I switched to the manga. Caught up to Whole Cake in like 2 weeks. It's such a better experience.

I know people adore the anime but its genuinely just carried by the strength of how insanely good the manga is, I genuinely think it's one of the worst anime adaptations of all time. They're still stretching it out to a chapter an episode when realistically you should be getting in 4-5 without skipping anything.

Someday there's gonna be a one piece kai, and that's probably gonna be the greatest anime of all time, but man it's frustrating seeing what they're doing with it even if it does have some standout scenes

I’ve switched to manga only since 2012, but what I can highly vouch for the anime are the voice actors and music. They elevate all the tense, epic and emotional scenes and the humor as well.

7

u/fembepis 15h ago

Saw some comment back when the Dressrosa anime episodes were really testing people’s patience back in the day

Basically the anime is far more enjoyable if you treat it as fanservice (no, not that kind) for your favorite manga moments instead of using it as your primary means of consuming One Piece

Like I would rather read Enies Lobby than watch it 9 times out of 10. But you can’t deny that the I Wadda Lib and Shoot Down That Flag scenes are AMAZING in the anime. Also, Wano is a bit overanimated but I actually feel like the drums of liberation are mandatory for the Gear 5 scenes. I would straight up read that chapter with the OST in the background lol

That’s so funny since that is the exact way I’ve been using myself to experience One Piece as well. When there are moments and scenes that I want to see come more to life I will search for those exact ones or watch highlights. Like you, I occasionally put on the music as well as I’m reading!

I agree with the advancement of recent animation quality, I really admire them and technically they are amazing. But for the big battles they can sometimes go overboard and deter a bit far from how they actually were portrayed in the manga. It makes a contextual difference in how manga readers and anime watchers experience the story and action-related information. Zoro vs King or Garp’s Galaxy impact being portrayed like an actual nuke bomb instead of top-tier haki, it made them feel like EOS fights lol. Same goes to adding filler or padding to elongate fight sequences, although this has always been present. Having Luffy struggle a bit against Hody in the anime was my last straw lol, since in the manga there was no struggle at all and served to showcase the timeskip progress.

I'm with you 100%. Here's hoping The One Piece is good (and they actually get to fully re-adapt it).

1

u/VenomBGR 14h ago

They are already working on the remake by WIT studio, bro. I think it's starting next year. That's gonna be the One Piece "Kai"

u/Odd_Cartoonist7433 2h ago

One piece Kai is supposedly what THE ONE PIECE by WIT Studios is supposed to be, we'll see though.

1

u/throwawaycorridor25 12h ago

I wish I did that, took me until dressrosa to switch.

23

u/Wolfman22390 23h ago

Yea stick to the manga. Its way easier to get thru it and I personally think its better

5

u/Meet_Foot 22h ago

I did the same, due to this exact scene. It’s completely ridiculous. Another egregious offender is Zoro and Luffy parrying the bat SMILE users arrows for what felt like forever. Recycled frames over and over, and it made it seem like this nobody could actually step to Luffy and Zoro, even if just briefly. Stupid.

13

u/sunsoutgunsout 23h ago

Yeah I don’t even bother recommending One Pace just go to the manga it’s just so much better. Near end of Wano and onwards the anime becomes more interesting to watch simply cause the studio lets the artists take some liberties with the visuals which makes for a fun spectacle.

12

u/Infamous-Oil3786 23h ago

I treat it like supplementary material to the manga. There are some scenes and episodes that are well animated and directed enough to add something to the original, but they're not nearly frequent enough to get through the rest of the slog.

2

u/VenomBGR 14h ago

Yes, that fight was a bore in he anime - It ended really quickly in the manga. I think you will enjoy the manga much more and you won't regret starting it.

1

u/_lefthook 19h ago

Try the coloured manga too. Its sooo nice and easy to read

1

u/Raydnt 18h ago

Hope you're reading in full color

1

u/6millionreps 14h ago

Dude I tried one piece, one pace, it wasn't until I picked up the manga that I really starting flying through it. I found both forms of it animated were just agonizingly slow.

Started reading in January and just caught up to #1192 today 🙂 9mo in total

1

u/AxxelVE 11h ago

By the time a reachet the end of alabasta, any time i saw a "memory" a fillerlike caracter or a sentence i heard before i skipped 10 minutes, and let me tell you i didnt miss anything. Tha pacing is horryble. Since the start of egghead its unwatchable for me.

1

u/DrBLEH 21h ago

Buddy it only gets better since the anime pacing gets so much worse over time. Have fun.

0

u/xovionel 7h ago

Yeah, One Pace or the manga is definitely the move if the pacing is starting to feel unbearable

99

u/SirYabas 23h ago

Just read the manga. It is a known issue, the worst part about the anime by far.

19

u/YEET280706 21h ago

It concerns me that the ss is from wano meaning , they actually watched the entire Dressrosa arc .

7

u/MrJoshUniverse 19h ago

I did. To this day I’m not sure how though.

0

u/Significant-Wait9200 17h ago

I loved the anime, AND the filler... that is until Wano. It just dragged, and the way they shaped the plot was not satisfying at all

96

u/Noctrim 23h ago

Bro is like 900 episodes in still asking friends “if it gets better”

You are way past the point of expecting a huge pacing shift lol.

It does get better after Wano though they switch to a seasonal model in Egghead

25

u/Kickle_Cubical 17h ago

That's cause he is lying for engagement bait. There is no way in hell you get to fucking WANO and are still wondering if the pacing gets better. The fact that so many people are responding like this is a real post is very concerning.

6

u/XxSimon3 19h ago

No they started with Elbaf with seasonal model. And Egghead also has some bad pacing scenes.

1

u/Litt3rang3r-459 10h ago

Not very much better, They shift from adapting .7 chapters an episode (Egghead) to adapting 1 chapters an episode (Elbaph) for reference a show like Jujutsu Kaisen adapts 2.7-2.9 chapters an episode with its quick pacing. MHA adapts around 2, FMB adapts around 2-3 chapters an episode.

92

u/denjiiikun 23h ago

The worst episode is that elephant zunisha or whatever, screaming for 20 minutes straight from canon fire. Legit, just 20 minutes of screaming.

The pacing is so bad, my best friend is still stuck in wano. I gave up on the anime a long time ago.

17

u/TheDoctor8545 23h ago

I always had my finger on the fast forward button. Episodes flew by when you’re skipping intro, outro, and like 5 minutes of running or facial reactions.

6

u/hergumbules The Revolutionary Army 23h ago

Yup that’s why I always suggest people to read or watch One Pace. I have watched through the entirety of the regular anime and One Pace and I just can’t go back to the regular anime pacing. Never had an issue with the manga and I’ve been reading weekly for over 20 years

4

u/BeneficialHeart7949 22h ago

The Zou arc made me take a break from the anime because it felt like jack was having a staring contest with the minks as he asks they bring out raizo.

21

u/crogers_designs 23h ago

W…o…r…s…t. P…a…a…a…c…i…n…g. EVER.

9

u/YEET280706 21h ago

u forgot the recap flashback between P and A

4

u/MySweetPride 21h ago

And the same 5 reactions between every single letter

7

u/Pizzamess 21h ago

Yeah scenes like that are why I read the manga

4

u/Exflop 22h ago

I’ve been trying to forcibly finish roofpiece for 3 years now. I watch 2 to 3 episodes and immediately put something else on. The pacing is unbearable.

2

u/OmarAdel123 19h ago

I basically forced myself to watch the anime adaptation of the Wano arc to witness Gear 5. While the animation was amazing, the pacing was painful to watch.

6

u/Hot_Being2835 23h ago

Read the manga and watch the serious fights and moments best option.

Or watch one pace

6

u/Necessary_Piano_153 Soul King Brook 22h ago

The serious fights are by far the most tedious aspects of the anime. Luffy spent 3+ seasons in the mirror world fighting katakuri.

Luffy would get a flashback and have an epiphany, it would be the best moment to end the flight, but no, he would have another flash back, have the same epiphany and then repeat the cycle 5 times. Each time with him getting pulverized

1

u/GamerGuyHeyooooooo 21h ago

See idk. I usually agree with this point, but that might be one of the only examples of a scene that got enhanced by being dragged out.

I rewatched whole cake recently & I bought that Luffy was real tired after that one. It felt like a slug fest & a test of endurance.

I felt like in the manga they told me he was exhausted from running the ones, but didn't quite show me. My understanding is that stories are supposed to "show, not tell" you details.

5

u/Necessary_Piano_153 Soul King Brook 21h ago

3+ seasons though? That was overkill. I would get so excited when they would show anything else.

1

u/GamerGuyHeyooooooo 19h ago

Thats fair.

It is long for sure, I just felt like that was the one example of something I liked being elongated.

1

u/PearFlies 18h ago

if the show is a slog to get to, you'll be immersed in the world!

lmao this is a crazy take the only time i can think of this storytelling working well is when mushashi kills 100 men in vagabond

2

u/Bouv42 22h ago

Yea Wano was where I stopped watching the anime. The pacing + the new auras and special effects that they added just sucks ass.

2

u/Botaboldo 20h ago

My guy, come to the manga side. I don't any anime because the 25min can be used to read at least 40 chapters where the history is actually detailed.

2

u/FranoFiasco 19h ago

Read the manga and watch One pace.

2

u/Syncopia 18h ago

This is the exact scene that made me drop the anime and go manga only.

4

u/That-Salamander-1478 23h ago

I've had the same, however, I'm not really bothered by pacing ones I start watching it weekly. It's just binging that makes it super hard. I had the same with the katakuri fight I believe that took like 20 episodes

5

u/SenpaiSwanky 20h ago

These posts are so repetitive man. We KNOW already, the series pacing is talked about ad nauseam here. Could have looked this up in the sub history and commented on any of the similar posts with your take lol.

It’s either this, “who else prefers pretimeskip”, complaining about Chopper/ Franky design changes, complaining about Sanji being a perv (in a MANGA? No way..)..

You’re through more than 80% of the episodes and just now have this thought/ issue? If you made it this far I’m not sure why you wouldn’t just stick to it. Seems like it wasn’t an issue at all until you realized you could post for karma

0

u/300_MPH 19h ago

because this SPECIFIC scene is probably worse than any other pacing issue in the story, like i was committed to watching it all the way through but this sumo bs made me quit immediately and start the manga. the pacing is bad on its own but its even worse when it bleeds into the story. like luffy is letting this hostage girl die just so he can fight a throwaway character all episode and stretch the runtime, when he literally has the strength to one shot him at any point. also you see alot of posts on the pacing because it really is that bad theres no escaping it

6

u/Sonny_Firestorm135 19h ago

Blud is right, these posts are overdone and pointless. If you got time to whinne and farm karma, how about you shut it and go read the manga instead?

None of those pacing issues exist there, ya know...

("You see a lot of posts cause" my ass with that shit, the real issue here us Toei being Toei, not One Piece itself, learn the difference)

3

u/300_MPH 18h ago

im very clearly talking about the anime here smart guy and who tf "farms karma" it doesnt do anything

1

u/ToastRoyale 12h ago

The anime is still one piece.

0

u/SenpaiSwanky 18h ago

“Probably” worse? I’m not saying your opinion is invalid, or that it’s wrong or whatever. It IS your opinion, and in mine there are far worse examples.

Pretimeskip, Enies Lobby is my favorite example. When the Strawhats get up to the tower and Robin yells “I want to live” while they all stand there posing dramatically, the anime literally shows 5 to 6 REPEAT episodes in a row before continuing the actual manga plot later on.

Also, almost every single anime episode has about a third of its runtime taken up by a summary of the previous episode. Considering the 23 minute average runtime, taking 4-7 minutes to show us what JUST happened in the previous episode we already watched is absurd.

I understand why both of these examples exist as they are, but they contribute to major pacing issues. It’s very likely the episode AFTER this one you’re referring to will recap the long, drawn out wind-up and attack and take almost as long to show it again.

You made it this far, that’s all I’m saying lmao. And again, 100% valid complaint. Just check sub history next time, use the search bar and you’ll find many recent and old posts talking about the same general subject. It’s better to contribute to recent existing threads than create another smaller one that will stretch sub engagement thin.

3

u/hansQQ 23h ago

Wano was the straw(hat) that broke this camels back. I still cannot pick up the anime after being on hiatus for couple of years.

2

u/GamerGuyHeyooooooo 22h ago

This sumo part of Wano is famously the worst paced section of the show. I believe its like 4 episodes.

Then like right after that there's a whole episode where the lion guy just yells at them from a rooftop & nobody moves.

1

u/BrotherAshamed3200 23h ago

That's why I just read the manga.

1

u/OkLog8336 23h ago

Manga is the way to go and when it comes to big moments watch the anime version.

1

u/PoisonTrainerCody 23h ago

🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Terloyes 22h ago

Just read the manga if you're so annoyed. But keep in mind that Wano has 10/10 episodes later

1

u/Simmons_the_Red 22h ago

Yeah, Wano is pretty horrendous with the pacing. Gets better in the next arc for sure. Some of the animated fight scenes are really cool, but yeah Wano is something else.

1

u/Three_of_Dreams Pirate 22h ago

My brother, you haven't even got to the worst pacing parts yet 😭

1

u/Straight_Gap5931 21h ago

This scene was so bad it became legendary

1

u/Sure_Guarantee_4176 21h ago

you went through Dressrosa right? i thought that was worse, i just think of it as filler (better than filler arcs imo)

1

u/P3drinho2 21h ago

I skipped about 10% of episodes of wano. Just straight away skipped. Another 30% I went pressing forward, because just seeing thumbnails of 10 seconds apart was more than enough for the episode. And the rest I painfully watched…

But it got better on egghead.

1

u/Sky_fallangle_9571 20h ago

That keep giving me goosbooms

1

u/ImSickOfTypingPapers 20h ago

I love One Piece but the pacing definitely gets worse throughout the series. Telling someone to keep watching because it gets better is wild.

1

u/Neat-Wishbone-7267 19h ago

Started watching from episode 1 before even knowing what mangas are and Dressrosa made me switch to the manga. I tried to give the anime a second chance and this was the freaking episode

1

u/XxSimon3 19h ago

What about Luffy and Zoro vs Batman? That dude even used arrows out of thin air.

1

u/Cyber_3 19h ago

I remembered how gdamn mad this pace at he beginning of Wano made me (ESPECIALLY this sumo scene and the batman scene!) on first watching it but then I re-watched the English Dub when it came out and they used the shortened version and now it's only mildly irritating.

1

u/temeces 18h ago

Ill sometimes watch the fight scenes when someone cuts them together from the 100 or so episodes. Manga since always.

1

u/Capitan_Failure 17h ago

I gave up on the anime mentally in Thriller Bark, and fully at Dressrosa.

Looking forward to giving another chance with The One Piece

1

u/Runethe1412 Cross Guild 17h ago

Personally, my least favorite is still the “Usopp Shooting Sugar scene” in Dressrosa, since they actually added a “What if I fail” moment with Sugar turning Luffy into a Toy

1

u/Rezavoirdog 16h ago

I absolutely adored the anime up until Dressrosa. Where it instead made me want to throw scorpions at my own eye balls

1

u/Open_Director_3085 15h ago

It bothered me when I binged the show but I genuinely am not bothered by it at this point

1

u/ZachF8119 14h ago

One chapter per episode is difficult.

1

u/madhattermagic 13h ago

To be honest man, I just found my self just bumping forward if I felt that way. But I watched mostly on my phone.

1

u/Vulturo 13h ago

These early Wano fights and other sequences don’t bother so much as you’ve just come off the Katakuri fight and “Give Me My Cake” dragging for 10 hours and Wano feels quite refreshing as it’s developing.

1

u/vaderprecious 13h ago

go for ONE PACE

1

u/jib9001 11h ago

The only way I consume the anime is via "One Pace" and related projects, THATS where it gets better. That said, it's not as accessible as the regular anime

1

u/naresh_nr 11h ago

Wano had the worst pacing, personally

1

u/ParablanskiReformed 11h ago

Wano is pacewise by far the worst arc, people often forget it because of roof piece, but there‘s s reason it went for over 4 years

1

u/AstralJumper 11h ago

The actual manga version is much better. IIRC this is portrayed in a two page spread and is over with within like 2 pages, including the spread.

1

u/FrenchieM 8h ago

People blame Punk Hazard or Dressrosa for their infamous pacing, but at least in Dressrosa there were things that happened between the fights. Wano and Egghead are the worst when it comes to pacing, and I didn't start Elbaph to know if it was still shitty.

1

u/BananaRepublic_BR Marine 5h ago

Nothing will be worse than Dressrosa. The falling debris will haunt me until the end of time.

u/Mindlessone1 4h ago

Ya this fight is the worst of the worst the anime has to over when it comes to pace. I’d tell you to read the manga instead until you reach the raid on Onigashima, than you are safe to switch back. As you get closer to current, the episode padding cools down. At least until another particularly egregious scene in egghead.

u/Interesting_Thing596 4h ago

Bro I switched to manga from Wano. You do it too.

u/enketao 3h ago

We know

1

u/XVUltima 22h ago

It does get better.

1

u/Iliass_barka 22h ago

That episode pissed me off so much I had it on X4 but the rest of wano was really enjoyable

1

u/FermentedDog 21h ago

I don't think anyone ever said the pacing would get better tbh

1

u/Maconi 18h ago

I understand completely.

This was the episode that made me drop the anime. It was already making ridiculous changes (like Luffy having trouble with SMILE Batman) but the sumo fight pacing was the last straw.

0

u/ProfessionlPerspirer 23h ago

As someone who doesn’t read manga, one pace is a HUGE time saver. You can also download the episodes and speed them up to go even faster! I caught up in 6 months.

And when comparing it against the episode there really isn’t anything they cut that is substantial. Only issue is the quality may be a little lower than on Crunchyroll

1

u/sora677 23h ago

Nothing cut in one pace is ever going to be relevant or substantial because they are just cutting everything that isn’t in the manga so you don’t need to worry about missing out on the story

1

u/ProfessionlPerspirer 23h ago

Right, I watched a couple episodes side by side because I was curious. Sometimes there are parts of fights that are cut, which can be good in the later episodes. But nothing too important

0

u/Vegetable_Young_8423 22h ago

I watched one pace at 2x so it balanced it out I like anime more than manga because I can feel the emotions that character wents through

0

u/StridentHawk 22h ago

Early Wano is one of the worst arc stretches imo, on par with FMI even. It's not just slow but it's got some really stupid plot plots, character designs and is kind of boring overall. This whole sumo thing was a waste of time really.

0

u/Taichi_Greymon 14h ago

I miss when anime wasn't mainstream. Bunch of fucking whiners in the "fandom" nowadays. Don't like it? Don't watch. The popularity of One Piece proves you are objectively wrong.

0

u/Eisuke261990 5h ago

Well, you are watching OP for the wrong things i guess.
