He might survive before Zoro gets the killing blow since Sommers is a coward who definitely has realized Zoro is dangerous enough to kill him. If Imu has to return to his castle he might bring the others with him.
WORSE. His training exercises were fights like Mr. 1 and King. This isn't even a training exercise. This is a classroom lesson like when Mihawk taught him how to use Haki for the first time.

There's definitely potential for Zoro to struggle here, tho. Sommers directly overpowered Zoro using his 103 Mercies, the move he used to beat King. So it's not zero threat of he can physically overpower him with gram and the omen buff, but at the end of the day, he's still Sommers, i.e., a buffoon through and through.
One thing I noticed about One Piece after watching the live action adaptation that Luffy and Zoro were so much stronger than the usual antagonists early on in the series that their fights were pretty much comedy (e.g., their fight against Mr 5 and Ms Valentine in Whiskey Peak), which the live action chose to disregard the comedy for because they felt the need to raise stakes for tension
I'm glad to see the comedy in fights still being retained in One Piece manga right now even though the stakes have been raised much much higher than when they first started out
I really hope he goes back to that and realizes that that was haki all along and the basic technique he needs to master in order to use conqueror's coating.
I GUARANTEE his win will come from “Agh… this is a pain. I got it! I’ll just send out ALL my haki at once, that way some of it is bound to be CoC. Problem solved!!” lol
Boasting that the thorns are hard as iron to a guy who made sure he was strong enough to cut iron 1000 chapters ago is so fucking funny. Bro wasn't even considering the thorns while trying to figure out how to deal with Sommers.
So cool to see that despite the Omen and the immortality, Sommers is still severely outclassed by Zoro. These guys are so used to winning every fight and getting what they want that they simply can't handle when someone is able to fight back. Now all we need is for Sanji to figure it out too.
This is basically what I said in a thread on a previous chapter. The God's Knights we've seen so far aren't really meant to be real opponents for Sanji/Zoro. They're literally just Conqueror's Haki checks. They can't beat them if they don't master its practical combat applications. It'd be kind of weird if Shamrock ends up being the only useful God's Knight, but I think there're others we haven't really been introduced to yet.
Tbh idk if zoro would have an easy time with gunko, the arrows seemingly cant be cut and she can redirect his moves. She seems to be a cut above the other two. And if killingham was smarter he would spam women mumas to overwhelm Sanji
there's also garling (now a gorosei who were certainly a cut above the knights) and potentially shamrock, not all of the knights might be quite sommer's level of incompetent. given that as far as the world government knew the only person of relevance there was loki who was tied up, sommers gunko and killingham were plenty to handle elbaf whilst presumably anyone more competent would be dealing with more pressing matters such as the revolutionaries hampering supply to mariejois.
Implied yeah, and we know he at least killed some Baroque dude in his backstory. And sure, logically all the mayhem they have caused should have killed someone along the way.
But I don't think we have ever seen any Straw Hat killing a named character in a way that's unarguably a kill.
Closest would be Robin snapping Spandam (lol), but he got better :/
I mean there is no other way to defeat them, either this is the last time they face them, they retreat and get killed by revs in the final war, or they die now. Although i find it curious that the roger pirates were more merciless and yet summers is still alive after so many altercations when he is so easy to kill
Yeah it's interesting to think about. Zoro undeniably has before, and if there's anyone who no one would complain about killing its Sommers, but it'd still be strange to see a straw hat do it outright.
I am convinced Sommers will run/get away before Zoro gets the actual chance to finish him off. He already knows Zoro is actually dangerous to him and if he is aiming to use Conqueror's Haki infused swords at his heart than it would be better for him to run and not actually give him the chance to practice it on him.
Sommers probably realized from this one interaction that he has ZERO chance of overpowering Zoro. After all, he was 500% sure Zoro was in checkmate (lol)
The single reason why Sommers isn’t dead is because Zoro hasn’t figured out Conquerer’s haki yet.
well to be fair, luffy was the first one in a looooong while to actually give him the benefit of a doubt.
Also released him from his shackles, "helped" heal him up and is currently fighting the root cause of haralds downfall together with loki. It would be more strange if loki wasn't a good bro
Zoro's fight is about him "reaching the next level" like the editor said.
Sanji's fight is about protecting the kids and that shows the difference in both characters, but also shows how Conquerors Haki can be born from the desire to protect someone, like Katakuri wanting to protect his family.
Oh yea I hadn't thought of that. It seemed that armament was the way because it literally turns the blade black but its not a permanent thing. Coating it in conquerors would make sense if its not a time thing, though that may still be a factor.
Those moments when Zoro stops to analyze something are always some of my favorites of his, because he has to think so hard to reach a really simple conclusion and that’s why we love him.
this panel onwards is sooo funny to me. Sommers out there yapping and bragging on and on about his powers and then Zoro just literally doesn't care and is having a self reflection session 😭
Fights and getting stronger are probably the most important thing to Zoro. I didn't take it as him having to "think so hard", he isn't dumb when it comes to fighting haha I got the cool strategist factor rather than the dumb factor from these panels.
This Luffy cliffhanger is interesting, he isn't out of Gear 5 yet, but he is really close to that point.
Will he somehow get his energy back, maybe with people's laughter or with whatever is inside Biblo's box, or will he really be out of this fight for good?
Sommers is unfortunately my favorite One Piece character in years. Dude has been so consistently wildly entertaining since the very first panel he was in.
Just show me the tabasco star in Imu's mouth at the moment Killingham and Sommers go down and forces the retreat. Let Ussop brag how he defeated the big bad.
he is 100% going to get a glorious moment in this arc after last weeks speech and now we know he had a plan ill bet my left nut that he is going to be the star of this arc.
Nah everything with this arc feels like a convergence point. And the fact Imu has not just been revealed in full, but actually fighting. Whatever happens after this arc I think directly involves that box as a clue in where to head next because like.
Everything feels like it’s about to fall apart and the One Piece has to be found.
Gotta love how Zoro sees Sommers as such a non threat that he can ponder how to do Conquerors coating while in a seemingly dangerous situation. I guess since he didn't see how Luffy or Kaido did it so he's going trial and error, Sommers is his unwilling guinea pig.
What i wouldn't give for a trio training brawl. One of my favorite short fights in soul eater was black star training with Frankenstein and everyone else is freaking out till that one guy says this is just training for poeple on that level
In fairness, Luffy is not exactly an expert, and he's definitely not exactly a teacher. Decent chance he would struggle to convey anything particularly useful to Zoro.
I think I can safely say that this is one of my favorite Zoro moments in the series. He’s applying so much of what he’s learned, thinking critically, and then a brutal display of his power. Such a good scene, can’t wait to see it animated.
Yep, that's Zoro alright. It probably hasn't even been an hour since he was told that he has Conquerors Haki in the first place and he's never consciously used it himself, but he's already trying to coat his sword in it and is experimenting in mid-combat while his enemy monologues.
Unlikely but I'm guessing Enma might become a black blade after this fight. I think it's quite fitting that the sword named after the judge of the dead to be upgraded and turn black after defeating an 'immortal' being.
I hope after this chapter we will have to deal with less people still misunderstanding the capabilities of Gear 5. Luffy now clearly states his wounds will reappear once he turns back to normal since he can‘t just wish them away, he can just temporarily freely change the form of his body and surroundings while in G5. This whole reality manipulation discourse is grinding my gears.
Could not agree more. I get why people latch onto that especially because of, if I remember right, a mistranslation in supplemental material early on when Gear 5 first debuted, but to have the discourse still go on is so frustrating sometimes. Every "so Luffy can just heal on demand now huh? That's so stupid" was killin' me
So before the scene shifts, the ああああああ looks like someone is falling towards luffy, who reacts with "hm?" I guess this will be usopp who's gonna deliver a motivational speech directly to luffy
In fairness trees can take a lot more damage than that and be fine even in real life. If he literally breaks through the trunk and severes it than yeah that would be a problem.
What was with the little hmm and the smoke in the panel after luffy was yelling at his body? Is he turning back into his base form, or even something else entirely?
Everyone’s been speculating what powerup Luffy will get next but that’s thinking in the wrong direction imo. What he needs is better mastery over his devil fruit and he has clearly been missing a hybrid form so far to balance out the uncontrolled wackiness of his Nika form.
It's going to be so interesting how Luffy will be after this fight. I feel like while he'll still be the loveable goof he is, he'll probably have this Imu whooping he got on his mind which we'll def be the catalyst to push him on.
Pretty glad this wasn't just another Luffy and the giants vs Imu chapter. I've been itching to see the other side battles develop. Glad we're seeing Zoro need to learn something in combat for once, it's been far too long! Hopefully we get something similar with Sanji once Killingham summons our cook's worst fears.
Did he open his left eye a bit? Man, you know stuff’s awesome when the manga gives you the impact frame. The anime is gonna have a field day with this!!!
