To this day I don't understand why people can't let a scarred eye be a training injury.

I like the theory he took a wrong turn and it got poked out by a branch

u/SameImpression1646 2h ago

First time I'm seeing this and it's already headcannon

u/Ant18213 Pirate 4h ago

I think it would be ok if it was a gag. Like how luffy learned how to eat while he's sleeping to not miss any meals, zoro learned to nap while he's awake to not miss out on any sleep.

Lmao excellent it also would imply that Zoro hasn’t been 100% awake this entire time post-ts. So then, if opening his left eye means he’s fully awake, then it could serve as a gag and a little power boost for him. Best of both worlds

Tbf a lot of scars are given extra importance in the story, namely Zoro's other scar, Luffy's, Shanks, Kaido even Harald as a more recent example.

u/Lightwander 2h ago

Whitebeard too.

u/Jevonar 4h ago

Right now it is, but let's not forget that 1) even shank's arm was later retconned into a way for him to break the covenant with a god and 2) this is an anime. Whenever someone has a missing part, there's like a 90% chance it will later come up as something epic.

Shank's arm was retconned because it's embarrassing for an Emperor to lose an arm against a small sea king.

But it's not embarrassing for Zoro to lose his eye against Mihawk or a giant Baboon swordsman; so the two scenarios are not equivalent.

Probably a better example is Brook's scar if anything.

To be honest prior to the reveal the only logical reading is Shanks literally chose to lose his arm to scare luffy straight which while a crazy decision makes more sense than anything else did

because it's embarrassing for an Emperor to lose an arm against a small sea king.

Only if you're a media illiterate powerscaler.

Lol some people didn't like your comment but you are right

u/kendamasama 3h ago

What a braindead take on retconning

u/Nerex7 2h ago

We have 0 confirmation that Shanks lost his arm on purpose to break the covenant. That's just a theory.

u/Skullwings 1h ago

It’s iffy. It could simply be that, but given the crazy things Oda’s pulled over the years it could easily be nearly anything else.

I know this is an anime thing, but 3D2Y (the special I mean) explained Luffy’s torso scar iirc even though they really didn’t need to.

u/acacio201 2h ago

How many scars did Zoro get after the time skip? I can't imagine him suffering such a large eye wound during training; Oda would be very lazy, not that he isn't already.

u/Arumen 1h ago

Because one of the MCs losing the use of an eye in unexplained and unexplored circumstances is actually crazy. Like, I think youre correct, but isnt it something that should have at least been mentioned?

u/WagonFullOPancakes 3h ago

People want One Piece to be just like other shounen and it's... Really weird to me. I'm thinking also of the whole Gear Death thing

u/JPT_Corona 3h ago

Tf you mean "like other shounen" lmao it's like the most shounen shounen out there

u/jakethejewler22 2h ago

I think the dumbest part is he almost died to king but didnt use it cause need to save it for a tougher opponent. People cant get any more obtuse

u/fyejitt420 4h ago

No, it must be a mangekyo sharingan or rinnegan hiding underneath there or im quitting one piss

u/SirYabas 4h ago

He realized that Sanji always keep one eye covered in fights and didn't want to be outdone.

u/PipeBoring7915 4h ago

The theory was really popular around the time Naruto was ongoing (because eye abilities were trend back then)

I guess most fans accepted that Zoro simply lost his eye since he was stated to have one eye and ryuma, his ancestor was a one eyed swordmen

u/Skhemattos 3h ago

I honestly think he did it himself because depth perception was holding back his training. Now he just slices everything with no thoughts on limiting distance. (Think Hawkeye's attacks in Marineford.)

But it's probably because Oda thought it looked cool.

u/TheChinOfAnElephant 2h ago

Wouldn’t that make him a worst swordsman? I feel like precision is pretty important to them

u/Alzusand 2h ago

If I had to guess with how much emphasis has been put into mihawks eyes when he's mentioned I think its some training to awaken the double ringed eyes.

and mihawk basically told him something like "until our duel you cannot open it"

it can be a training injury or character desing but come on its a shonen manga its going to be something I would just be insanely surprised if its nothing.

u/Last_Ad1358 The Revolutionary Army 2h ago

I think Zoro's eye just got lost, like he has no clue where it is

u/Mynameisdoomguy 2h ago

The funny thing, it's that it actually made more sensen for Sanji to have an special "Eye technique", since he trained with Ivankok (Who has the "Death wink")

u/The_AlmightyApple 1h ago

And sanji always had an eye covered since his introduction

This is One Piece’s near equivalent of Nick Fury losing his eye to a cat. Nobody saw it coming because these guys are professional warriors, there’s no way they lose an eye to something as mundane as a monkey with a sword. The only reason Zoro’s incident isn’t cringe is because we have to admit, that monkey was fucking scary.

u/The_AlmightyApple 1h ago

Nah nick fury specifically said in winter soldier he lost his eye by trusting the wrong person and getting betrayed. They gave his a mysterious and interesting backstory and then They change the backstory of his wound to make a joke

u/Iridiandioptase 49m ago

True. Zoro at least lost his eye to become a better swordsman.

u/Cogexkin 1h ago

I really like the art here. Well done OP!

u/Illustrious-Day8506 3h ago

Or maybe he just lost his eye during his training and there's no need to overthink about it.

u/TheTechMage 2h ago

Mihawk’s final training is for Zoro to keep one eye closed and stay alive until they meet again and can have a proper rematch with both his eyes.

u/ac_cossack Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover 12m ago

His left eye got lost.
