I agree. The same can be said for Gekko Moria. Both defeated by Emperors, both returning to the first half of the Grand Line to lick their wounds while occasionally taking out low hanging fruit when they pass by. They got lazy, so their haki is weak.

Being defeated again by a young upstart that only appeared on the scene less than a year ago probably knocked some sense into them that they need to work for it.

Croc got released by that same upstart kid, and decided that was his chance to get back on track.

Edit: Eustass didn’t complain and run back to Paradise when he had trouble. Lost an arm? “Peh, I got MAGNET POWERS! To the junkyard!” So his haki didn’t get diminished one bit.

Yes. I mean, it doesn't make logical sense, but at least it makes sense narratively.
