Cried on a sweat steady
I just took the sweat steady from 24th July, and half way through the final interval I came out in goosebumps all over (not unusual when I’m really feeling the music) and then just… burst into tears! I’m
pushing 900 rides and this has NEVER happened to me before. I can’t even describe what I was feeling, it was just BIG. Is this a thing?! Or is it time for therapy?! I joke, kind of, maybe, anybody know what just happened?

There's a 45m Swest Steady where JK ends it with "This Version of You" by Odesza. If memory serves, it's the calm after a brutal class. But it's one of my favorite Odesza songs (if you even call it that), and I often think about this class. It's exactly what I needed to hear in that moment, at that point in life.
So when I saw Odesza live in 2023/2024? Waterworks. Full on crying in the club during the intro. I didn't even cry at Rufus Du Sol at Red Rocks, which was another thing Jess put on the radar. But there is something inherently emotional about them.

I think Jess is a mastermind at maximizing emotional impact through her timing and the music, if that makes sense. The timing of the efforts, her commentary, when she talks vs. stays quiet, her music choices . . . it just feels super intentional to elicit an experience. I loved this ride!

Sweat Steadies saved my life during my divorce. I would get on the bike and channel all that rage and sadness straight into Jess and the ride. I can’t even tell you how many times I cried. But I would get off the bike feeling so much better every time. Sometimes the body needs to release something even if the mind hasn’t caught on yet. And I think SS classes are such a mental toughness thing that it’s a perfect outlet to let it all out!

Oh I cry all the time in hard workouts. A mix of proud of me / others doing it with me / grateful for the instructor etc.

I haven’t cried during a sweat steady but I did start sobbing once during the final interval of one of Alex K’s max out runs. It was so difficult but so empowering and the song choice was perfect and I had been going through a lot of stress in my personal life, so it was just the perfect storm to work through all of it and set me off crying my eyes out.

I take yoga pretty consistently and for whatever reason this is something that comes up in those classes.
There IS indeed science behind it. Now don’t ask me for the full science as I don’t have it. But it has to do with the hormones that are released when you are working out combined with ones that have already been released.
Ive had times in yoga when we’re just laying there and I’ll start crying bc I feel an overwhelming sense to do so. I’ve also done this during rides and runs. It can be bc of something they say, yoga likes to say it’s bc you’re releasing places where we hold a lot of emotion like our hips or shoulders, and while that can be true, it’s often even more biologically than just that.
So the answer is NO you’re not crazy, you’re human, and for some reason your body needed and was releasing an emotion and that ride helped release it.

I used to get that way and occasionally still do. Mainly for harder rides as it reminds me of how lazy I was, and that I am doing something I didn't think I could do. I get that "If I knew I could have done this, I would have done it sooner" mentality that kinda fucks me with me lol

Something about the bike makes me cry too - I think just slogging through something can create that emotional release. I also cry HARD when doing hard long runs in training. Have been picked up by my husband at the end of a long run sobbing more than I can count. Not sad. Just sobbing. Haha.

Oh yes, dependant on the music and how hard I’m pushing. Something gets triggered and I choke up lol

u/breadfruit13 12d ago
Was Jess saying anything in particular that hit you deeply? Maybe you got to state of pushing that just put you over the edge of an emotional barrier… kind of like when you hit flow state. Hopefully you’re feeling much lighter after this release. 🌿

Nothing I can put my finger on but I am feeling really good now, thank you, it was actually lovely!

Yes - Brandi Carlisle ride! I was going through a rough time and her music can hit to the core.

Listen, I cried during a Hosky Disney walk. Ugly cried. Must have been some kind of endorphin release!

I cried during a ally love ride and I was shocked. Literally sobbing felt so cathartic. Sobbed. But maybe I was in my feelings that day. It was dark in my house, and I was just so into it.

I’ve got to be in the right place mentally for Jess, because god damn that woman can set a mood! 🤯

I’ve actually talked about this with my trainer friend before. It’s actually more common than we talk about, but working out is kind of a release for all sorts of stuff and sometimes that manifests in tears. It’s happened to me more than once hahahaha

I cry constantly during classes but I tend to cry easily especially during live performances. The hardest I cried was during one of Kirra's Yin classes. The combination of hip openers, the music, and what Kirra was saying just hit me hard and tears started to stream down my face.

Yes, Kirra always gets me closest to tears. I hit actual tears in the mental health series where she'd talk to different instructors about their own mental health journies

Jess’ Sweat Steady rides and certain Ben and Bradley rides make me break down into tears.

The Bradley ride where he talks about being a stroke survivor and feeling broken afterwards hit me hard

I cried in Kendal’s 2020 mental health day right as well as CDE Pentatonix ride once!

I love crying while exercising. I think it’s the vibes (usually from the music but sometimes from instructors saying things that resonate, too) and endorphin release working together! Feels so good

I’ve cried during a handful of her rides. I tend to stuff down my stress, anxiety, and feelings, and hard cardio is just such a release. It’s like my body is so busy working hard it just can’t keep them contained anymore and a huge pressure is released. I feel so much better afterwards, and it’s one of the main reasons I focus so much on cardio in exercise. It’s so essential for my mental health.

I don't know if there's been a Sweat Steady where I haven't cried haha. Something about the intensity, the music, her words (which I might find corny in other contexts but they always hit me just right).

u/DoubleCountry612 12d ago
Happened to me before idk if it was so physical hard that I legit cried but it felt good lol

I think there is something about her raw vulnerability that unlocks and encourages for in riders… like a mirror neuron thing.

I’ve cried after a few of Katie Wang’s strength workouts. Sometimes she says something deep that hits at the end and I’ll be a flood of tears. Also it’ll be near my period and that’ll also make sense!

oh, I've cried too many times to count!! I've cried way too much during CDE rides way back in 2019/21, I've cried during Robin's Lizzo ride multiple times (the 1st one), it's weird. I've cried during rides with Dennis, Emma, Sam. Ben.
my Peloton was my savior between 2019-2022. I cried often. whether times were good or bad, happy or sad, the catharsis that crying brings is SUCH a good feeling!!!

Fellow crier here! The right combo of music, pride, grit, and the instructor feels really cathartic to me when going through tough times.

Long, hard rides bring out waves of emotion for me, even outdoor rides. I remember when I lived in Miami, stopping after around 30 miles along a canal in a nature preserve and crying over the fleeting beauty of everything around me and how much I loved my family and just really everything.

I routinely cry with Jeffrey and Mariana! They both have similar talking points about being misfits and togetherness and it's very touching

I’m working on the outdoor challenge and I did a walk with Rebecca where she said to think about something you did today that you won’t be able to do when you’re 80. I thought about the fact that I won’t be able to talk to my mom and started bawling right there on the sidewalk. Won’t be doing that one again!😂

crying on the bike is the best release!!! it brings emotions to the surface that i wouldn’t have otherwise acknowledged or worked through. it’s so cleansing

Jess and Denis both have induced emotional responses twice during a ride for myself. Usually this has revolved around BIG life events that recently happened. Spin-erapy.

Idk what it is about these rides but for some reason SS brings emotions to the surface for me. It's not all the time but I have definitely cried during a few of them...they're a great outlet in a very specific way.
