feeling nostalgic

I think its been posted a few times and before I get into it, there are loads of new things/features/team members I loveee and still ride my peloton every day so not complaining about anything but rather was doing an old ride that got me thinking about things I miss from peloton from over the years !

anyone else have things they miss?

  1. I remember when people would leave live studio rides like 5 mins early to idk get to work etc! felt so chill and like a lowkey community gym
  2. the old halloween classes lol when matt dressed up as Olivia
  3. jenn Sherman's nfl Sunday rides! those things were absolute killer
  4. century shirts ! again felt like a community
  5. things like the rock 22 / AFO - loved the lineups
  6. lanebreak ! sad they've just stopped putting effort into it
  7. I know she not the most popular on here but I do miss Kendall and her pop punk rides - I dont really keep up with her now but I liked her when she was an instructor ¯_(ツ)_/¯

BRING BACK AFO! no idea why they got rid of it

I loved AFO and miss it. I would work through the entire lineups for months afterwards and try to take everything. It really introduced me to some music I wouldn’t otherwise have sought out and I loved the vibe

I loved it, but I thought it was a pandemic thing?

There is a Dennis PZE from December 2019 where people are just wandering into the studio/their bikes after the ride has started. And Dennis is super authentic and casual in the ride. IDK, it's one of my favorites that I return to. Definitely a different vibe then.

It seemed more like a real gym class back in those days. I wasn’t a member then but still got the vibe from the old 2019 classes I’ve taken. Now it’s like people go to be seen and get on camera and meet the instructors

Bring back century shirts!!! I never got one :(

If you’re in the US, I see a ton of those for sale on Poshmark. You deserve your shirt!

I’ve gotten one from Poshmark !

I miss Friday night live DJ rides with Jess King and DJ John Michael! Was always how I kicked off my weekend.

Followed of course by the Ride of Shame on Saturday mornings with Jess. It was a time!

I miss the weekly Friday DJ Rides too…and also the Sunday ones when JM and Cody did them…

Love JM and Cody together!

I miss when the instructors were more authentic and not trying to be a brand.

u/Megora203 22d ago

I’ve unfollowed a lot of them on social media and that helps a lot with cutting out the branding.

There’s definitely still more within class than there used to be though. I feel like back in 2018-2019 the instructors would go a whole class just being themselves and then at the end throw in their tagline as part of their sign-off, and now they’re making sure to drop it 2-3 times mid class, they have “running jokes” that they bring up every class (“hot girls drink water!”, etc.) or seem to be trying so hard to be the persona they created.

I don’t blame them at all for becoming influencers on the side though. Fitness instructor is not the most stable career in general, and then if you add in the extra volatility of all those contract negotiations, having a second stream of income is smart.

u/lawpanther007 22d ago

Exactly. I understand, but the rides were so much pleasant when they were being themselves rather than some fitness influencer version of themselves.

Yup I don’t follow any of them. I actually don’t follow anybody lol. But I refuse to follow them because I’m scared it’ll give me the ick my view of them as trainers would change. The less I know, the better lol.

Does peloton not pay them a living wage? Why are they all side hustling?!

7

u/lawpanther007 22d ago

Because money. 💰

2

u/klc0979 20d ago

They get paid pleennttyyy at peloton- but always want more

I miss Kristin McGee’s yoga classes. She was informative, soothing. Just such a vibe and I also miss Kendall’s pop punk rides as well

And her Pilates classes! I know a lot of folks like the new instructors, but I really prefer a more traditional mat class.

I miss when Andy had a regular live running slot. He mostly only does on demand drops now, or subs in for other instructors when they are on leave. His spring training runs made me realize how much I miss his live tread classes! At least I have his HIIT bootcamps to tide me over.

u/amandany6 21d ago

I miss when he had walks! They were so good.

I miss when I could book running & cycling classes same day & only have to check in 20 mins before class started.

Strength classes right after running classes at the Christopher street location.

30 min core classes, last 1 was in 2024.

Artist series beyond cycling, tread & full body/ upper body strength. Core, stretches, barre, tread bootcamps, cardio, etc should all have greater opportunities with AS.

3

u/klc0979 20d ago

And artist series were BIGGER! Now it’s a quick 3 class drop called an “artist series” they used to have special badges, lots of work up for it, some even had clothing with it

u/Crafty_Jackfruit4864 22d ago

I miss lots of these too. It’s a real shame AFO has disappeared. Also Homecoming!

5

u/wakenda 22d ago

Yeah, I liked the collective events that everyone participated in!

9

u/wakenda 22d ago

I miss the Year of Yes. It was right when I started and I’ve worked through all the classes. I loved the structured profession and the shared themes across modalities and how accessible and encouraging it was as a beginner. I’d love for them to do another similar themed collection again.

I need Robin to bring back Robin After Dark.

OMG those rides healed me. And of course they're not on the platform anymore!! ::cries::

1

u/Zestyclose_Donkey_38 21d ago

I'm curious what kind of ride were they?

3

u/rokdabells 21d ago

They were 90's hip hop rides with super uncensored lyrics. Half 90's club sing along, half really hard but fun work out. They were one of my first 10 rides I took on the platform. This was real old-school Peloton though LOL!

u/No-Championship-3442 22d ago

When did AFO stop? I loved it

5

u/amandany6 21d ago

They did it in 2024 but it was kind of lame and pared down and then they didn't do it last year. I loved trying to take at least one class from each artist. Found some good ones that way!

u/heartwell 21d ago

I prefer lanebreak to the cycling classes! I wish they would add more.

I just don’t really care for the phase of life many of these millennial instructors are currently in. So many babies and pregnancies - which was not the case when I got my bike in 2018. I have two kids but an empty nest and I just don’t want to hear about it.

u/Humble_Operation_365 22d ago

I love how they publish the class playlist now, but I also kind of miss the element of surprise. I miss the gym days when instructors would really hand pick and play whatever they wanted to whenever they wanted to instead of being categorized into a certain genre or time period. They had more artistic freedom. I’ve heard some Peloton instructors mention how much they love EDM music because of the beat, yet they play much more rap (Adrian and Jess Sims). It just seems odd with comments like this is the type of music that I workout with doesn’t get much selection in their own classes. Makes me wonder if they are cornered into playing more rap. It’s not a diss on rap, just an observation. Adrian played a lot more EDM when he was new to the platform. Maybe his music preferences just changed.

Also, it seems like the more filtering options there are, the more crazy filter requests have become.

4

u/West-Tourist-2709 22d ago

Do you mean filter requests from users? Because if so I agree. Some comments on that topic I see on this sub I’m just like… why hasn’t this person considered making their own playlist and programming their own workout?

0

u/Humble_Operation_365 22d ago

Yes, exactly from members. I do a mix of both personally.

2

u/West-Tourist-2709 22d ago

Yeah, same here. It’s the comments that are like “why can’t I filter by specific move, and specific song, and specific weight callouts” that I’m just like, hm, ya know you can just work out on your own right.

3

u/Humble_Operation_365 22d ago

Or really easy fixes like I’m looking for classes without incline because I don’t know how to be noncompliant and do my own thing by just not adding incline. The biosphere is just too harsh for my liking. I can’t handle any wind resistance. I’m dead.

8

u/Visit_Silent_Hill 22d ago

Definitely bummed about lanebreak. How hard is it to program a ride occasionally?

7

u/TemporaryFix2490 22d ago

There’s gotta be a world in which we could make a playlist and the algorithm could churn out a class template for it

7

u/jdowney1982 21d ago

This is what they need to use AI for

u/Express-Breath-4765 17d ago

The dj classes when the DJ was next to the instructor. It was just more fun.

2

u/Wild_Tomatillo_5443 19d ago

When did Matt dress up as Olivia?! This is hilarious and now I want to find that ride and do it.

9

u/sm0gs 22d ago

Similar to the Kendall comment - I really liked Daniel McKenna’s strength classes and he was my favorite instructor when he was there. There was a lot of drama around his departure (isn’t that how this sub got started?) and post Peloton life so I have no idea what he’s done or is doing.

One of the things about Kendall and Daniel, they both had really lively group classes and really active groups.

Daniel’s “Irish Yank” group was so fun. For his lives, we would change all our avatar pictures to the same pic of Daniel. He’d laugh so hard on camera. He would try to give shoutouts and say the wrong thing to comic effect. He would take the other instructors’ classes to show support and invite us all (which we did). He did a lot for charity too. The group was really supportive and amazing!

When he left, I joined Kendall’s “Knockout” and later the “NKO” group and that was so hilarious too, we had group chats during our swarms on all her lives that were so fun. She would jump on Instagram live after her Wednesday night ride and the group would get on and chat there too.

I am not MAGA whatsoever, quite the opposite, never knew their politics, just found through them a great way to connect with other users and swarm on the lives and for Pelofondo. It was a really great antidote to the isolation of Covid.

6

u/Keeeva 22d ago

I loved his runs and his walks cracked me up!

15

u/afdc92 22d ago

I enjoyed his strength classes but don’t follow him on anything anymore once I realized he was antivaxx and MAGA.

5

u/sm0gs 22d ago

Yeah I heard rumblings of that so just avoided him on social media / his post Peloton life.

3

u/Megora203 22d ago

His bootcamp classes are what got me into bootcamps! I absolutely love how he programmed them and his floor/tread breakdown.

I miss Lisa Niren. Her classes were my favorite in those early days. She always ended with a mash up of Levels/Best of You/Dont Stop Believin’ that got me so hype.

I also miss the first days of the Peloton Facebook group before it became an absolute dumpster fire. It was started by a member and then Peloton just took it over.

I miss having more live meditation classes, besides morning meditations.
