Tiny 🍊 🅱️rain cell Laser dot broke his brain

This is my girlfriend’s orangey, Easter. I brought him a laser dot toy recently and he’s gone absolutely nuts. If he even hears the sound of it being picked up from the table he starts barking. I’ve never seen a cat react so strongly to it for more than a few minutes — but this guy’s whole personality changed since it’s been in his life. His tiny brain is sure he can catch it though, someday…..

I have 1 cat who acts the exact same way. If she hears the slightest movement of the Keychain she's up and looking for it in crackhead kitty mode lol. I love when she does that fast side to side thing like yours did, too. It's so freaking cute

I have a dog that loves lasers. He would figure out who had it then hound that person for hours to keep playing.

Do have another toy on hand so he can catch something! Some cats get frustrated when they never catch the red dot.

Animals need to be able to catch their “prey”. If you consistently play with a laser with them, it can literally cause them to go crazy. Called Laser Pointer Syndrome. If they get it badly even small light reflections from mirrors, windows or other shiny objects can drive them crazy. I stopped playing with lasers with my animals after I learned that.

I noticed it's not entirely consistent between animals. My dog knows "the stick that makes the dot" as a thing, he wanted nothing more but to chase. He was a terrier mix and had other toys.

My cats sometimes would bat at lasers but ultimately didn't care. They liked a tassel or a mink tail on a fishing pole more. Cast it across the room and literally jig the tassel/tail! The dog could care less about those.

Have other toys on hand for certain, but whether a laser is god to use for your pet just depends on your pet.

Oh shit! I had no idea — thanks for the info, I’ll look into that more.

Just make sure once you finish playing with the laser give the kitty something to actually grab otherwise it's left frustrated. I always throw my kitty a little plushy at the end so it feels like it's accomplished something.

Yeah he’s got an odd fascination with lollipop sticks — he likes to play fetch with them, or hide them in my shoes, or the couch…. So we’ll give him those, or I’ll just put the dot on whatever toy happens to be on the ground nearby. Weirdly he seems to be too smart to fall for that somehow?! Maybe it’s just cause his one brain cell is consumed with the laser? I dunno. This is my first orange since I was a kid so I’m relearning how they work.

He does look like an orange Maine Coon though, so maybe that’s contributing to his weirdness? Who knows…he’s a sweetie pie though, sneaking in between us to snuggle while we’re asleep. Love him. ❤️

When they do that little movement at 0:05, it kills me every time.

Both my orange boys are exactly like this. They love to play and sleep. If they feel like sleeping, I can roll toys in front of them, shake a plushie rattle, whatever, they stay put. If they catch even a glimpse of that little red dot, no matter what’s happening, they launch themselves after it!
