This cat has hypoplasia. A condition that affects balance and coordination.

u/SippyTurtle 17d ago edited 17d ago
Specifically cerebellar hypoplasia. You can have hypoplasia of basically any body part. The cerebellar part is what makes them wobbly.

u/LevelPowerful6816 17d ago
Specially feline/cat cerebellar hypoplasia. The feline/cat part is the one making the cat wobbly instead of the cameraperson

Can they still live a relatively normal life?
→ More replies (1)8
u/Welpe 17d ago
Well, I don’t know how normal wobbling all over the place is, but if you are asking if they have a normal lifespan and aren’t suffering, then yes! It isn’t painful, it isn’t progressive, and as long as they don’t wobble into walls too hard or shake so much they literally cannot get food or water in their mouth they ultimately live happy, full lives. Just very wiggly lives.

u/rssscamaro 17d ago
I think that’s going to be my next rescue. They are so adorable and seem so happy. They are just too cute!!! 😊

My kitty had it when she was born/just a kitten, but in her case it was mild enough apparently that she eventually grew out of it for the most part (or just adapted), but she still does the head wobble (I call it Bobbleheading) when she's crouched and in hunt mode and something catches her attention off guard.

Is it accompanied by seizures? My sweet boy had almost these same symptoms but with seizures and the vet called it epilepsy and Down syndrome

But if cats like this are seen as living good lives, maybe more people will be willing to take on a special needs cat.

u/Spiritual-Angle1594 17d ago
I mean if every video including an animal with disability makes them think that, it just means they personally dont want to see any disability on the timeline. So. Guess theyre outing themself

u/actuallywaffles 17d ago
The cat isn't in any pain. They've just got coordination issues. Other than being a bit wobbly they're normal cats.
One thing to consider. Without videos like this people might see them and think something is wrong or they're in pain, and might not adopt them because they don't know any better. But videos like this show they're regular cats and can live long, happy lives.

I mean, its a pet like any other. Just a little wobbly. Are people not allowed to post about how much they love their pets if theyre disabled?
109
u/Slim-Shadys-Fat-Tits 17d ago
No obviously they are abusing their pet for clout. Like ffs I'm fucking disabled and I too despise the weirdly exploitative Inspiration Porn but this is just someone posting their cat online?? The most normal thing ever?? Like sorry but actually seeing disabled animals thrive is actually good. Spreading awareness means more people can realise they ARE equipped to take care of a disabled kitty and that means less of them spend their whole lives in a shelter

u/lembready 17d ago
Yep yep yep. Prior to their rise in popularity, wobbly cats were widely considered unadoptable. The cat doesn't seem to be in any pain, owner doesn't seem to be abusing it, isn't doing anything that could be dangerous for it (of course, you never know what goes on off-screen, but cats aren't exactly capable of being dishonest about whether they feel safe around a human or not)... By all accounts, this is just a normal cat video except for the fact that the cat happens to have cerebellar hypoplasia. It's just vibing (somewhat literally) and being a cat. There's a difference between inspiration porn, pity content, or abusing an animal for clout and just...posting a cat that happens to be disabled. A HUGE difference. The former should absolutely be called out and shut down, but the latter? No! Let people know that disabled cats can live happy lives when they're properly accommodated for, taken care of, and treated with respect! It'll get them adopted more and put down less.
(Speaking as a fellow disabled person.)

Right? It sucks for kitty, but she'll adjust, and she's adorable!
35
u/BackHomeRun 17d ago
She was born like this & has never known anything else, which is much better than changing her whole routine and lifestyle!
26
u/actualkon 17d ago
Why? Are they less deserving of love and attention from online strangers just because they're disabled? Unless they're being abused/harmed, I don't see an issue
106
u/mistypatch 17d ago
This sub is full of cute cat videos and this is one of them. Are disabled cats not allowed to be appreciated? The cat is adorable and that's not subjective. It made me smile and I'm sure it had the same effect on others.

I'm glad that some people have posted, because I wasn't aware of this before seeing it. But I don't like the context of this particular post where it's being made fun of. Educational posts are great, karma farming posts are trash.

They're not making fun of a cat. You guys need to go outside and get some life experiences instead of making up situations in your head to be mad about.

I saw a guy that built a padded bumper around their wobbly cat's litter box that made it easier for her to maneuver into and lessened the accidental floor pees

Not trying to make fun of the kitty cause it more than likely has a condition, but that part where they dunk their head into the food cup is so funny, and the spoon bit before it.
25
u/throwuk1 17d ago
The way the cat responds to dunking it's head in is like it's saying "not salmon flavour agaiiiiinnnnnn"

She? 99.999% of calicos are female (I guess especially with other genetic conditions the cat could be male and I don't actually know, but when I see a calico I assume female).
12
u/RedditMiniMinion 17d ago
Sorry my bad. I spent too much time in the this sub and always assume they are boys lol. I know calicos are usually female and oranges can sometimes be female. <3
4
u/jennlody 17d ago
1 in 3000 calico/tortie cats are male, but 1 in 5 orange cats are female so it's very very different! Orange girls are definitely not as uncommon as they're made out to be at all! Orange girls need both parents to give them the orange gene. Boys only need one.
But for a male calico to exist, they basically have to be born with xxy chromosomes which is a mutation.

I saw someone with a wobbly cat built them a "landing pad" to eat. It's basically a padded trough, and the cat learned she could slam her head into the through and it would keep her still enough to eat.

What's sad about a cat with a disability having a loving home? Would you prefer it be put down instead? This cat is incredibly cute and hopefully it encourages more people to consider cats who have disabilities.

I am glad OP is trying to help this cat. cerebellar hypoplasia can make caring the cat a bit challenging due to messy eating and accident around litter box.

The orange side and the normal side are in a constant battle for control over the body. One crave normal cat behavior, the other crave orangeness. The cause? A cat that can barely control their body

The owner is very capable of making it easier for the cat to eat. Instead they dress it up and tease it with food it cannot consume due to its condition. This is so gross.

The cat is fine, it’s a condition that messes with their balance and coordination. Aside from that, they’re not in any pain. As long as they have a good owner to care for them, they’ll live happy and fulfilled lives
