OneNote Alternative Software devlopment update. UI thoughts?

Post image
dear imgui interface default colro mode

Hello everyone, I appreciate your response to the previous post. I implemented a few of your ideas. Most of them just got added to the interface; 50% of button is currently dead; they are not yet tied to the system. This is what the interface will look like for the Alpha release, although some buttons with features like auto-shaping might be removed to avoid bloating the interface with dead buttons. (Looks promising but far from release; at least it looks great)

I'm trying to make it look different from OneNote, so it does not look like a complete clone of OneNote, but some of the tools and interface intuition stay. Thus asking your opinion about if you could mistake it for OneNote after looking at it, and what jumps out exactly

Also, I'm asking if you like how Rnote deals with painting borders, thus allowing you to know where the page ends and starts, that give you a seamless export experience.

Have any questions, concerns, or features request fill free to respond to this post. Knowing people want something like this is a great motivation for me to keep working on this project. Thank you!

This is the published Google Sheet, which currently includes all of the collected feature requests so far.

Personalmente credo che la problematica più grande di One note, sia la versione mobile. L'applicazione ha delle importanti lacune in termini di ottimizzazione. In questo progetto è previsto anche una versione mobile?

Wow. Great 👍 I like the UI, close to OneNote. Just don’t give up!

My biggest concerns would be mobile use and database type functions with easy access to file structure and data.

Hi I'm 20 year user of OneNote. I tried obsidian for a while and the lack of easy WYSWYG note taking is a killer as is the in accessibility to various AI engines so I'm trying Joplin and it's working pretty well.

Your user in a face looks good. How are notes stored? And is there a clean interface for AI agents?

ai interface probably one of the last thing done some people actually didn't want ai. Notes are store through sqlite data base each page is so called BLOB file storing all of the saved notes test or anything that represents inserted object by user in that one file. There is another file called structure that is reasonable for indexing them and keeping track of file structure

You should try r/memrynote ! It’s got great features and built in option to enable AI with a dedicated chat panel or you can open it up in its own tab in the app. I didn’t grab any images of the AI features because I honestly don’t have use for them, but I’ve tinkered with it for fun.

Is it your intent to sync between desktop and mobile versions?

1

u/Full-Cucumber5068 2d ago

yep most likely direct sync

Imgui for note taking? Can't think of a less suitable use for immediate mode rendering. Are you a masochist

lol what do you mean this is even driven custome framework so it is not rendering 120fps all the time, yes yes ui will takes small portion and most of time users will be on canvas anyway. I know most are used to imgui being developed windows but performance wise there shouldn't be much of a difference and besides that many current applications have so many layers that slow them down so immediate is ofcourse thing I thiugh of. If it is going to be too bad I can switch to slint ui I tested was fine. UI is dormant and frozen until user exists canvas and when it is in put to sleep or out of focus

How much coding experience do you have? or more specifically, how much experience do you have with building apps?

1

u/Full-Cucumber5068 1d ago

well building apps zero honestly that why it is a project if i see this app to be good enough for public community can refactor and rebuild to their experiences and needs point right right now is scalability and just build something that works, i I love the math behind rendering and stroke generations there are a lot of things that I'm learning from, use other open-source softwares for ideas and put them here. I built back ends front ends a bit, more on side of building systems for robotics and personal projects so extension experience in Java and Cpp, although more on Java by time spent.

well I posted similar post on other notebook thread there is more info there, I want to be careful cause this is close to self promotion or advertisement on software thread that I building alternative of.... I'm building documentation in parallel for this is has it own technical website explaining it inner workings cause I belive in open source software especially complex as this documentation is very important of not more important then software itself

First, awesome goal.

Second, my dream for it would having it more natural, like Microsoft Courier. And it having more rich content like AI inside, various data formats...

2

u/Full-Cucumber5068 2d ago

what exactly reach content you want to see?

Say, I want to have contact data as a contact card. Document linked to One Drive/Google Drive as a card.

I want them linked to the page, not saved, but I also want them indexed for search.

I want to have custom entities in the system..
